This video is exactly why you are the G.O.A.T. of TH-cam golfers. Incredibly humble and willing to discuss shortcomings in your game despite your incredible success. Thank you, Grant, for igniting his fire and helping create the best version of Rick we have seen.

Great comment. Since I'm Australian I can't stomach Young Grant. It's not personal. It's definitely cultural. But I do agree. Grant's brash rudeness has fired Rick up and that's good for us all. Especially Rick. And yes. Rick is the G.O.A.T.

Couldn’t agree more. A lot of the negativity was starting to grind a bit tbh and I’m a negative so and so myself. One of the great things about watching the likes of Grant, Micah and Garrett is their almost relentless positivity. It looks as though some of that is rubbing off on Rick and I am enjoying the transformation.

You can actually see how excited you are about Golf again from your facial expressions alone, and it's contagious. I started back playing in August after 20 years away from the game and can't wait for my next round. Will definitely be watching closely to see where you go with this new enthusiasm for the game.

Well done on your commitment to improving your game. I'm 62, had both knees replaced 3 years ago. That combined with a bad shoulder have robbed me of 60-70 yards off the tee and at least 2 clubs off my irons. 5 weeks ago I had my right shoulder totally replaced and I am committed to clawing back some of that distance I've recently lost. Thank you for being an inspiration to me on this journey!

57 here and over the past few years I've actually found some distance by doing one key thing...STRETCHING...STRETCHING...I can't stress it enough..STRETCHING....I've added working out in the gym as well but the pure flexibility has given me club head speed increases. I deal with an extremely bad back which has caused me to WD from a few tournaments over the years but for the past 2 years since I've implemented stretching I've been so much more consistent with all things golf related.

As someone who's always tinkering with my swing, I sat glued for the full 21 mnts! Great video with so many tips that I can use for myself, but also an inspiration to see you - already a good golfer! - put in the work to improve and share the journey with us! With some top level golfers in the YT space across the pond, the UK crew have to get their game on ;-) !! I've commented earlier on one of your videos that if you could just start getting some consistency throughout your swing (specially irons and wedges/chipping), then breaking 75 wouldn't be such a grind. Finally, a shout-out to Robbo and thanks for including him in your content. Absolutely love his swing, and he seems to be a top bloke!

Can't believe just how much your excitement shows through. This has to be my favourite RS video. Partially because I'm on the same programme with my game right down to the weak grip and requirement for therapy after every bad short game experience. At 63 I'm going to get back to a 4 handicap again, I am, powered by the sort of enthusiasm that shines through this video. As the guy below says - it's contagious. Can't wait to see Rick Shiels 7.0 golf game smashing 75 time and again.

Great to see the hard work paying off, Rick. Certainly, James Robinson getting in your face about your performance kicked you in the pants. Equally, I think, that moment when Grant Horvat suggested you use the forward tees in your 1 v. 1 match motivated you. I remember a comment Lee Westwood made about consistency in your match with him. It was a simple remark but a real eye opener for me as I come back to the game after years away. All the best on your progress.

Super, Rick! I've been following you for some years now and I thoroughly enjoy your channel. At some point I think you were more involved with the production of the videos than with your golf game itself and the level of your game had sunk rather low, as you readily admitted at the time... Drives all over the place, irons with an unpredictable hook or a push out to the right, terribly inconsistent short game, pretty lousy putting, and (unsurprisingly) a general lack of confidence. I thought it was courageous of you to address this in one of your videos (perhaps a year ago?). Since then you have taken the bull by the horns and committed yourself to improving your game. I am so delighted for you that you are seeing the fruits of your labour! The content of your videos have also kept improving, and it makes it all the more enjoyable now your game is up to par... or under par soon!!! ;-) It's inspirational, Rick, thanks for taking us all along on your journey! Wishing you all the joy of continued improvement in all aspects of your game, video production and beyond, kind regards from the Netherlands!

Just came back from an early morning 9 holes. After playing this ridiculous game for more than 42 years I only now started to appreciate that it is a game of patience and repetition to edge closer to a perfect round does not exist. Yet the small victories when improving ball striking, short game finesse and putting strokes keeps us hooked in the euphoria that the perfect round is out there somewhere. Kudos in the commitment to chase this, I know I will be following your progress with intrest.

Thank you so much for this video! I know the intent was to show us what you've been working on within your own game and swing but I've taken your tips and it's helped me so much. I've been having issues shooting everything way right all year, several lessons and still no fix ... yet I watched this, went to the range with the swing thought of bringing the club out to in and near enough every other shot went bullet straight. All that time, money and effort and that was all I needed... thankyou 🙏🙏🙏

A tip I got from a pro years ago to draw or fade on command was to do the take-away opposite of your intended path back. This is because your body compensates naturally for balance. So to fade, try ever so slightly pushing the club out away from you on the back, it should do a mini-loop and come back from the inside-out. Vice versa for the fade. I can do this all day at the range. The wrist cupping was a big one for me. Last summer a friend pointed out that I was wrapping my club head. I was pointing it right of target. Immediately on the range I was hitting the club 10-20 yards further and with ease. Sometimes it's these little things we forget about, or just can't see ourselves because we've been taught to KEEY YOUR EYE ON THE BALL! lol. If only during practice, maybe I should be thinking about other things haha. To all the drivers out there, stop starring at the only tree by the side of the road less you forget your hands can steer!
edit: I really really hope Rick reads this. Trying to fade makes you feel unbalanced and you'll start getting too close to the ball. That aide doesn't work the way you think it will. Golf is GAME OF OPPOSITES :)

I went through a time where I was hooking the ball big time, to the point where I lost confidence standing over the ball and not knowing where to aim. I finally went to an instructor and he had me make the exact changes you are working on. I had a very traditional back swing where the toe was pointing straight up when the club was parallel to the ground on the takeaway, making that change felt totally counter intuitive. It felt like i would hook it even more, but after a few weeks of getting used to it , it actually worked. I've not mastered the golf swing by any stretch of the imagination, but I have mostly corrected the hook. Soon after that a case of the shanks appeared and it was back to the teacher for more instruction...it's a never ending journey.

I have been golfing literally for a year. I played about 15 times over 30 years (going on 55 years young!) but last year I wanted to do better. Got an instructor which made this game even more fun for me. Am I a great golfer? Nope. Do I have fun but "hit" it better? Yep. Shooting in the mid to high 80's which I am good with. Sometimes worse, but, I simply have fun on the course. Even at your level to seek out instruction to improve your game is impressive and a very humble thing. Keep it up Rick. Rick . . . absolutely fabulous video . . well done ! Along with everyone else (well most of us anyway) we will now have to learn how to realign our swing. I too have been awful . . woeful for at least two years. Thanks for this . . . you are now taking us all on a new swing path (not journey). Next lesson please . . . .

Really enjoyed this video and hearing how enthusiastic and committed you are to your improvement. I felt genuinely sad a few months ago when listening to your podcast and you and Guy didn’t seem to think your performance mattered. This is such a turn around and I think it’s fantastic! Good luck!

Rick... 9:04. Face is terribly open at the top of the backswing.
I was struggling with the same problem in the spring and through the season I developed a bowed left wrist position. And it made me hook all my irons. 10-15m to the left, all shots. No matter what I did - "overdraw". Last tournaments I just aimed at the right fringe to end up in the middle.
I was so annoyed, that I called my coach and took a lesson.
He looked at my swing, checked the grip, checked aiming, we tried a few things and he finally said:
    - You know what... just keep the face square to the plane of the swing for the entire backswing. Leave all this "bowed", "cupped", "drop the club". Just keep the face square.
And it freaking worked like magic. I've hit 20 consecutive balls within 1m from the center.

Rick was the original golf content creator I started with. It is the absolute truth Rick's game kind of has been in a slump for a little bit of time now. HOWEVER, as of late it has sprung back. The video I noticed it the most was the video where he beat Grant. It was the Rick of old so to speak and it was nice to see. Happy the game is coming back to him, makes it all that much more fun to watch. 👍

Swing is looking SO much better! I remember noticing in your videos how much your shots would start out to the right. Could tell you were massively swinging from the inside. You almost blocked your shots right.
I remember a few times i'd be amazed how far right they'd start but you were aiming on target! Goes to show even the pro's need help sometimes. Keep it up mate!

Such a great video!! It’s great to hear about your journey, even though we’re so used to seeing you play.
I really liked hearing how you were trying to overcome the swing faults or areas of your game you weren’t happy with. Love what Robbie said.
I’m almost mirror image, can get up to 7-8degrees out to in and am working on getting closer to neutral, feels like I’m massively in to out but getting closer to neutral with the odd in to out shot in there.
Thanks for such a good overview, would love to see another video like this at the end of the year and in February

Couple of things. 1. Awesome! I’m so glad to see you so pumped! 2. You might check out HWPO Golf for strength and conditioning. 3. Why haven’t you or at least talk about why you haven’t gone to more repeatable and forgiving clubs? I.E. one length irons and wedges and armlock mallet putter? Just in my eyes those help cut some inconsistencies out of your game? Or at least simplify your thought processes?

Good for you, Rick! Starting new chapters is the key to a long and happy life, both on and off the course. I'll look forward to seeing you reach your goals of swing path, swing speed, and ball speed. As a nearly 70 year-old, my index is has improved from the low 20's less than 10 years ago to now hovering around 10. And like you, some intensive lessons (my first ever) did the trick. In my next decade, I'm committed to seeing my index drop into the 7 or 8 range.

I like the fact you want to improve just to enjoy your golf more. Love the fact you like the Wallasey Golf Club, a hidden Gem. Love watching Robbo playing golf too

Rick, I feel your pain and excitement! I am going through exactly the same process at the moment and starting to see more neutral path figures, as you are. I also had to massively weaken my right hand which took months, but is now starting to feel more natural. When I do manage to get the better wrist position at the top, the ball flight is awesome - starts much lower then slowly rises up. Much more penetrating and a far better strike. Keep at it!

  • @Vulneravariable
    @Vulneravariable ปีที่แล้ว

What’s crazy is if you look at the slow-mo backswing after the first two balls, the left wrist is still somewhat cupped. The “feel” versus “real” is eye opening. Thank you for continuing to help the rest of us. Take care, and go low.

I love seeing the numbers from Foresight or Trackman when working on the swing on a simulator. I would love to be able to consistently have a 2 - 3 degree in to out swing path with my face 1 degree closed to that path, my golf would improve tenfold. I have a tendency to leave the face 3 and 4 degrees open causing many shots to mis right. I need to work hard like you . Good luck Rick. Golf is such a tough and frustrating sport which always needs work and we love it.

This is crazy watching this. This is exactly what ive been working on! I was swinging between 4.5-5.5° inside to out which meant a huge draw on most of my shots. I'm now working on a streeper and less rounded back swing like yourself, feels as if i'm hitting accross the ball like yourself and also trying to slide my hips and shoulders round before ball contact. So so interesting to see you going through the same

What a great video! Exactly what I am needing to work on with my swing as well so can completely sympathize with those new swing moves and "feels". It's so hard to alter the positive club path to a more neutral number or negative. I can totally feel the difference in strike when it syncs up.

I have found that one of the hardest things to learn is to un-learn bad habits in the mechanics of a golf swing.
Retraining your body and muscle memory to what a good golf shot feels like.

Right on Rick! I have been a subscriber since you were at a driving range testing clubs looking barely 20 years old. You had a weak grip then and, because you were young and athletic were able to save most shots, but your friend is right: A stronger grip and a flat to bowed left wrist at the top of your backswing is the way to go to play better and more consistent golf. I changed this aspect of my swing in 2012 to gain the same benefits and have never looked back. Go for it!

I bought the Foresight Pitch n Putt course last year and playing 9 holes of that every time I'm in the simulator (inspired by your Pando garage build) over the last year has seen me banish the pitching and chipping yips.
Its got everything from 36 yard to 170 yard holes and some fiendishly sloped greens which force you to play away from the pin to a flat spot if you're out of position.
It's more fun than repetition and forces you to adapt and work out shots.
    Highly recommended.
