It's the theme of a lot of quality YA/coming of age stories? Being more normal than you think you are, or that being not normal is normal. And nobody who read Judy Blume books as a teenager, or Jacqueline Wilson in recent years, can not know this? And talking to other people who've had similar experiences/temperaments whom you have a good relationship with is also a good way to find that out. It doesn't mean we're all the same - or that some people don't get shit on worst by other people or by their own mental health or experiences otherwise. Background info: 1. As the host said she's 19 at the time of this interview (April 26, 1991) but later that year on October 29th she turned 20 years old. 2. "Mermaids" was released in North America in 1990 but it was released in Europe in 1991 this explains why she's there in the UK promoting it in '91. 3. After this Winona worked on a film called "Night On Earth" then took a 5 month break from the film industry due to mental exhaustion.

Winona is a class apart and I'll tell you what her secret is - right from her stardom as a teenager she always had a fundamental respect for older people. Note how polite she is with the interviewer here.
Since the "shopping incident", I've always thought she's had a raw deal, other actors eg Robert Downey Jr can commit more serious offences and have bigger drug problems but still have a complete career revival! @@jlim003 Obviously I was referring to common civility…..
But thanks for your condescending reply which helps cements my point.
@@VJ4rawr2 You're welcome. The 80s had extremely high crime. It's the reason we got media like Death Wish and Dirty Harry. In fact, murder rates PEAKED in the 80s.
LOL, common civility. Gimme a break. The boomer mentality seems inevitable for every generation. You could be a hippy burning a bra in the 60s, and by the time you hit a certain age, it's "oh the good ol' days. When music was actually good and people were so kind and tolerant". You could be spray painting walls in with a punk mohawk in the 80s, but when you hit that certain age, "oh, the 80s! A time of civility!" LOL.
@@jlim003 thank you stranger on the internet for your nice words..

@@ricardoramirez4884 so you can’t be beautiful if you’re in your 50s? 🤨
6:51 - "I just kind of came out" Funny how that line got such a subdued response in a 90s talk-show in Britain but if it was on Jimmy Fallon today he would've burst out laughing.
I like her shy and cold days. Really like Scorpio.
So beautiful. I was a young child when I first knew about who Winona Ryder or Johnny Depp were because I chanced upon my sister watching Edward Scissorhands on a rented VHS. How time flew swiftly.
I love her voice too 😍
when Lydia Deetz and Wednesday Addams were in the same movie...
STORMY YES!
I fell in love with her in 1994 when I was 15 .. the night I saw reality bites!....so beautiful! ...
Same story here, but it was Edward Scissorhands in 1997!
I LOVED her in heathers!! ( she's beautiful )
I love her in the Beetlejuice.
Loved her in girl interrupted...
She is so gorgeous! I love Winona Ryder, she's such a beautiful, intelligent and articulate person. She's such a wonderful actress I love her movies, it's so sad watching this interview and thinking about where she is now. I hope she makes a big comeback, I don't know maybe it's just me, but I almost wanted to cry watching this, because she so deserves to have great career again.
She made her big comeback with Stranger Things- so you must be happy! :)
@@dsscam I am! Course you know I posted this comment 12 years ago
You know I never found her beautiful growing up, but I see here how stunning she is. I think now, looking back at her old movies, it was the hair colour changes I didn't like, such as blonde in Edward Scissorhands etc. She is unbelievably beautiful with black hair
I love her as an actress she's really unique in the best way .
jeez she was my biggest crush...and you can tell Christina Richie was a good actress
For whatever reason the way she speaks/sound of her voice make me think of Kurt Cobain in his interviews.
Damn i thought the same all the time i saw this interview
They are both infps. Along with Johny :)
Just a very quiet presence, self reflective, and careful with the words before they speak them. Just both very deep thinkers and private.
Would have been cool if she was with kurt instead of courtney
That era. That generation. I should know I am from it.
i watched this again and again just to see her beauty back in 1991.
I was 7 when this was broadcasted.
Nobody can replace Winona ...
I miss JINONA Johnny and winona, 😔
Winona still is the same... still beautiful and weird
I love Mermaids, it really is a charming movie, set in my favorite era too. Winona is so freakin gorgeous, I mean she has this plain blunt uncombed hair, a man's suit on and practically zero make-up and still is beautiful, and she doesn't even care about her looks which is even cooler. She puts 99% of the other so -called "hollywood beauties" to shame.
THAT HAIR, MAH GAWD. SO LOVELY
She stole my heart right there.
Winona ryder is so calmn mellow and down to earth she's such a beautiful woman a sweetheart I love her she has a very calmn smooth voice soft spoken loving caring person i could tell that she's so caring because of the way she talks and she's my favorite actress of all time. ❤
she’s so classic and beautiful
What an adorable, loveable sweetheart of a girl
What did I do to deserve this video on my recommendations?

I love how they're trying to give sorta negative-ish questions to spill some tea about the cast/experience but she's definitely not letting that slip by, what a queen man
Mermaids is still one of my favorite movies ever, gotta love Winona 💫💕
she’s so beautiful - just shows how you don’t need to keep up with these ‘ideal’ beauty standards. so many of the comments say she’s beautiful and half of you are probably as pretty, yet we all follow these unrealistic standards and get caught up in them :/ whilst she’s so natural which makes her beautiful
Only 19 here! Crazy how smart and beautiful she is!
Background info:
She's perfect
i loved the questions honestly. and she answered them well. lovely interview
Winona was extremely beautiful and elegant, Host has also very good voice , Dont see these kind of interviewer these days..
Winona looks like lady Keanu here. Am i wrong?
I thought that too when I saw the thumbnail
Winona + Keanu = Illegal offspring that would usher humanity to golden age utopia.
Winona is incredible!!!...
so undercredited..and so very talented and clever..its not fair, man...lol
shes just too good..
WINONA FOREVER !!
she's barely changed since then! gorgeous, intriguing woman. love her
Winona Ryder and Mia Sara were my faves 💜
She has the most soothing voice too, total sweetness.
can you imagine a teenage actress today speaking so thoughtfully and intelligently? as far as her plain looks go, she's naturally gorgeous no special effects required.
There's probably one or two, but I agree with the sentiment.
@@mrhobs What's funny is I made that comment 11 years ago, but now I can think of some young, if not actually teenage, actresses who seem similarly thoughtful.
@@buzzardbeatniks Ha, cool. First, glad to hear from ya, and second, yeah... maybe there was a period back then where it was hard to come up with some names heh. Anna Kendrick maybe, but I guess she would've been 25, Emma Watson would've been 21... yeah, those aren't great examples. I mean, very intelligent, but maybe not quite the same level of authenticity and heart that Winona has... no offense to them, ha.
...Carey Mulligan? Lily Collins? Ha, just thinking of likable female stars. Hard to come up with someone on Winona's level. 😌
Ah! Lea Thompson! Got it. OK, at least a very strong contender. And yeah... kinda cheating since that's the wrong time period. Yeah, I broke a rule just to come up with a decent comparison lol. K bye!
At 19 you are absolutely NOT a teenager if your gender is female.
@@Ice.muffin wut
Winona is a class apart and I'll tell you what her secret is - right from her stardom as a teenager she always had a fundamental respect for older people. Note how polite she is with the interviewer here.
I just realised I was in love with Winona Ryder in 1991.
Since the "shopping incident", I've always thought she's had a raw deal, other actors eg Robert Downey Jr can commit more serious offences and have bigger drug problems but still have a complete career revival! Could it be because they are men? Yet again the double standards of society - after all, these born again "stars" can only make it back with the good graces of the general public! 🤔
