as Chris Pine said "everyone should play DnD". It is such an insane game where everyone builds a story together like our own HBO show. I have played DnD for three years now and I still have no idea what the official dnd world is.

I always appreciate your enthusiasm for fun and silly movies. Usually reviewers just say these types of movies are bad without mentioning how fun they are to watch even though they are not great.

I think some people forgot how to have fun! Exactly, having a couple flaws doesn’t mean a film can’t still be enjoyed

I am very excited to see this, as someone who was never able to get into D&D. But also, comedic Chris Pine and comedic Hugh Grant are two of my favorite things on the planet, so gimme that. And with Game Night being one of the best comedies in recent memory, it’s awesome to see Daley and Goldstein make a big jump from that to this!

You have a huge bright future in film criticism, Sydney. Your love of movies is infectious and, best of all, you give clearly defined reasoning behind your reviews. That is SO RARE in the cinema critique world, not just in the microcosm that is TH-cam but even in print journalism as well. I come from the days of Rex Reed, Kenneth Turan, Vincent Canby, et al so I have a pretty cinemascopic lay of the land (read: I'm a geezer.) Actually you kind of remind me of Leonard Maltin in his prime - he was a big champion of movies while still maintaining a critical eye. Keep on keepin' on. You give me enormous hope for the future!

    • @SydneyVolpe
      @SydneyVolpe  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thank you so much, Jeff! Can’t express how much it means to me to even be in the same sentence as someone like Leonard Maltin. I am not a geezer so I have a lot to learn haha, but comments like this are so encouraging and I appreciate your support!!🙌🏼

I'm going to see it for a second time, and this time I'm taking a couple of friends who haven't seen it. Everyone I know who has seen it loved it, and most of them are D&D players like me. I went in with an open mind hoping to be entertained, and I got exactly what I wanted! 😃

I know as soon as more people see it that one specific cameo is going to be meme'd about for the week. Had a lot of fun with this, people loved that lute bit and the wildshaoe transformations. I definitely heard a couple excited ooohs when Rege Jean Page appeared, clearly some Bridgerton fans were in the audience. This kind of just felt like the type of movie Marvel forgot how to do properly. 5 star chonky boy dragon too.

You are correct - it is not only done well it is done respectfully with fun! And we don't get "The Hollywood Message" YAY bc D&D people don't want to be preached too, we just want what we got in this movie and I want to see a second movie!

Agree with everything you said, this felt like the most accessible fantasy movie in awhile for both past fans & newbies, and that ended up being so so good. I cried as well haha I was just shocked all of the sudden that they had such a cute ending that made sense and put actual emotion behind it, lots of fun here.

Cried more than I did watching D&D than EEAAO LOL. Like, in so many moments. I think it's the nostalgia of playing it during middle & high school (in my 40s now), & the fact that we've waited DECADES for a good D&D film. & the game mechanics which ground "magic" with rules (waaaaay better than Dr Strange in the Multiverse of Horseshit). This movie had humour (The Princess Bride; Monty Python-esque), action & even better team dynamics than GotG or Avengers, plus a LOT of HEART, & really hit ALL the marks, with 🐣🐣🐣eggs galore for D&D fans (jumping around to ALL these iconic D&D locations; D&D game mechanics at play --- definitely an Easter rebirth for me!) but non-players would equally appreciate the fast pace & the superb script.
I predict a sequel & possible trilogy coming up!
Thank you directors, writers & the fantastic cast.

Another killer review. Glad you liked it! As a D&D player, it hits all the feeling of playing while keeping its structure (which can admittedly get lost at the table haha). So many things to geek out on but, as you said, there’s no prior knowledge required. So keen to see it again!

I've never played D&D before I've only seen my friends play it , I wasn't all that interested in seeing this because I've never played the board game but I'm seeing so much praise for this movie from a lot of people and some of my favorite TH-camr reviewers that I now got my ticket for this movie to see this Thursday and I'm excited to see this now and my friends are hyped for this movie too Lol , plus I haven't watched any trailers which is rare for me so I'm going into this movie literally completely blind

I think the exposition drops and backstory issues were kind of a meta joke, actually. Those are things that players and DMs occasionally go overboard on, kind of like Zenk being an overkill NPC.

No matter what the reviewer looks like, I always make sure to copiously praise their energy! Can't have enough exclamation points while doing it! In fact, a general compliment to the reviewers energy may be the dominant form of reply! Along with effusive praise, with just a hint of lashed expectations!
This movie may rake in 370 million! They would obviously franchise sequels then! But if not, they still ought to! If John Wick 4, and old hat Mario are printing money now, well their motives will never give ME the feels of A+ Rodriguez!
OK I will feel genuinely bad if you fall for any of this. You are the definition of sweet.

  • @PungiFungi

Reviews for this movie are generally positive...but being released right after John Wick and right before the Mario Bros movie hurt its box office....and some dumb comments made by the directors probably turn off some potential movie goers. Maybe this movie will do well in streaming and DVD/Blu Ray and make its money back in the long term. I do agree this has a lot of potential...it can be a film anthology where each movie is a different set of characters, or even having the same cast playing new characters each time around.

Love the movie and all. Top notch! HOWEVER! Neither the directors, Paramount, Hasbro gave Ed Greenwood a SINGLE credit mention or shoutout even!! Ed who is the creator of the Forgotten Realms and the planet, Toril ( Abeir- Toril in the past, two sibling planets into one, dragonborn and tieflings are from Abeir ), on which things mostly happen. The continent of Faerun with its Sword Coast and known western coastsl cities of Icewind Dale, Neverwinter, Waterdeep, Baldurs Gate etc. A huge spit in the face of Ed by the corpo suits which takes his work as their own WITHOUT permission! And hes not the only one. They didnt afaIk consult or credit the creators of the Dragonlance setting either when WotC released the updated 5e Dragonlance campaign which is set on the planet of Krynn.
