  • Le Guess Who? and de Volkskrant bring you short video portraits of acts performing at Le Guess Who? Festival 2014. We shot the band Viet Cong live at EKKO and spoke to frontman Matt about their garage and his lyrics. “I’m obsessed with that post-apocalyptic vision. All my favourite movies and books are set in that kind of world. I’ll love it if the world goes to shit and I have to fight someone off just to get water to drink.” Hello Matt Flegel.

Go back to Vietnam if you don’t like US freedom to call your band whatever the fuck you want it. I know this band is Canadian but the controversy happened in America, over Vietnamese refugees attempting to cancel this guys band because their name was offensive. In American, people don’t shut other people out because they hurt your feelings. Maybe in an oppressive totalitarian state like Vietnam, but not here. So, politely, fuck off

james Doctor lol don’t speak for the band, Matt actually listened to the people criticizing the name and changed it because it didn’t mean that much to him. I don’t think he named the band Viet Cong in some cringy act of exercising free speech like how you’re defending it, they just formed their band during a time where edgy humour was trendy and it didn’t age well, so he changed it lol

@@mothsoup5595 Alternatively, a bunch of wealthy college kids spouting off CIA talking points in support of old U.S. Imperial ventures shouldn't be considered "woke"

"We're canadian, we had nothing to do with that [Vietnam War]"
"Canadian corporations sold war material to the Americans. In addition, at least 30,000 Canadians volunteered to serve in the American armed forces during the war. At least 134 Canadians died or were reported missing in Vietnam."
