Chef Yia is one my new favorite hosts next to the Japan series with Shizuka. They both have such a charismatic presence that just adds so much more presence to the shows💕
I'm really loving this cohost. He could be a stand-in for Calvin anytime! I lived in rural Myanmar, and it was identical to this way of life. It's a wonderful reminder that less in more when you see how much happier the people in these villages are.

I was in northern Laos three months ago. The people there are amazing. The landscape is amazing. The food there is amazing. They have the best beer in SE Asia. I will definitely be returning to Laos as often as possible.
Really enjoyed the last few episodes of Northern Laos. I cross the boarder from Vietnam into Laos many years ago and through the travels we saw the untouched villages, their kids hanging around and their stilt homes. They are such warm and friendly people. I love how they still live, living off the land. Simple and hassle free. They eat what they have & don’t ask for much. That’s why you see they don’t have modern illness like depression or diabetes etc. They are happy with their life. Their kids are always outdoors playing and contributing to the family chores. Wanna see more of their foods. I’ll try everything except bat and bile. 😍😍😍😍.
So true what you said. Eating organic food not being exposed to chemicals and all the outdoor activities are probably the reasons why they live to be 90-100+ years old.
Im from Thailand but I live in Germany since I was 2 or 3 years old and my family is actually from the northern Thailand and this video is so wholesome to me because it reminds me of my village

Hey Sonny it is true, the Lao diaspora community has learned to bring their culture along with them. As a Lao American, it is ironic that I would like to visit the country my grandparents had fled. Like Yia said, hearing about the homeland from older generations had always sparked a curiosity in me as well. It's refreshing to see Lao culture being put in the limelight.

Ant eggs are one of my favorites. When I was in the Philippines, my grandma would sauté them in garlic, onion, and tomatoes. The live shrimp dish is called jumping salad in the Philippines.
My twin n i were adopted but my family on my dads side were fm Laos but immigrated to MN so never grew up knowing any of the culture and all these cool things. Watching episodes like this helps us connect to our heritage. Just wish we could’ve heard them speaking the native language a bit more through the interpreter but it was awesome!! Good on ya for trying heaps of cool crazy things! Love ur guys work!!

You ain't gotta go to Laos, poor country folk done been eating everything that moves for hundreds of years here in the U.S. Crawfish, fish, possum, squirrel, rabbit, deer, racoon, you name it, they eat it. I've known some seriously poor people over the span of my lifetime, and turns out you'll eat pretty much anything when you have no other choice.

Here in the states, we do the papaya and crab too, but we mash them in with the papaya after opening em. I dont personally eat the crab, its mostly used for flavor as well.

Fun fact. They talked about something feeling like sand while eating the algae, and that’s because algae does turn into sand after a few days of being dried. 💡 also, has been loving this channel for years and still can’t believe it’s not on TV yet.
Sonny doubting that live crab salad is a new for me. Dude has eaten a fish salad the fish literally still swimming on a bowl, live shrimp salad, and raw blood cockles. I'm not sure if he's doing it for the show but that's kinda funny for me😂
Yes he was doing for the show, fresh water crabs contain a lot of parasites (worms, leeches v.v.v.) may put your body in danger. Pretty sure he has to swallow a lot of pills after scene.
These ants are called Chapda in Bastar Chhattisgarh India they have many medicinal properties. The tribals here would let these ants bite them in order to be healthy. Here we make a paste(chutney) of it using garlic,green chillies, tomatoes and salt. It tastes heavenly ❤
I met/dated a girl who was first generation American, parents born in Laos. That Papaya salad looked exactly like the one she'd make me. Minus the crawling beasts. If you've never had a legit papaya salad, it's a thing of beauty.
Watching this made me drool🤗 so wholesome to see our way of foraging. Keep it up, we also did this in the U.S. on the coast of California as a family outing being raised in the Bay Area. Baby crabs fermented with papaya salad is hella good
