This tutorial walks you through building a mouth rig in after effects using aescripts Joysticks n Sliders. This rig isn't perfect but it's a pretty good start at making an easy to use custom mouth rig. Please feel free to ask questions or give better techniques.

For the matte you can use the effect SET MATTE, that way you can use ONE layer for ALL mattes

Hi Jared, this is cool! Thanks for the amazing tutorial. But I am facing some problem while following this tutorial.
I am creating a shape layer and at every key frame I changing its path (mouth shape style) accordingly, but when i try to bind its path keyframes to joystick cntroller, it doesn't work at all. How can I fix that?
It just binds, position, scale, rotation,anchor point, and opacity with joystick but doesn't bind any path property.
Would appreciate your help a lot.

I have a question. How do you do to rig the different elements together? I mean, you make the mouth rig and you can move it in those four positions, then you make the eyes and do the same, but how do i rig those controllers into the head, to make it turn both mouth and eyes with the head.
I tryed doing a precomposition but the eyes controller got stuck inside the precomp, so if i wanted to animate it i would have to open the precomp to make the changes.
Im pretty sure he has another couple of videos in his channel about this character, it has a full breakdown of how to rig the mouth on the head
I have one question, please help me. My Joystick can't update path shape. I have also 5 keyframe with 5 path shape different. And then click Creat new joystick but, nothing happen! Can you show me how to fix it? Thank you so much BTW i have 1.7 version
There some very important steps missing here. Did you parent the mouth paths of the masks to the original mouth shape? If not how did you do it? I did that and the lips don't move in sync with the other mouth parts.
I think you have to individually adjust the 3-4 other mask layers to those 5 keyframes. But I'm only halfway so I'm about to find out.
Thanks for this tutorial. I´m struggling with one thing, I create keyframes in the path of a shape layer, (5 keyframes different paths, then i apply the joystic) and it doesnt make the animation of that path. What am i doing wrong? In the video you create the mouth with paths of a shape layer and it works...

Tiago Nery hmm... you’ll want to make sure your version of joysticks n sliders is up to date. Next make sure you have the shape layer selected when creating the joystick. Other then that I’m not sure what could be going wrong. Best of luck!

Hello there, thank you for your great tutorials. unfortunately, I don't understand how and when you made a joystick. when you select them all and hit the "Bind" button. when I select my layers and hit the joystick, the path keys doesn't work. just standard parameters like position and rotation are working. many thanks again for your teaching.
farhad lamei hmm do you have a total of 5 key frames on your shape layer paths? That would be my guess that you don’t have the right amount of key frames but correct me if I’m wrong.

when it came to masking out the teeth, instead of finishing all the positions then duplicating the mouth path multiple times to turn it into a alpha matte, i duplicated the mouth path into mattes first and then set the duplicated paths parent to be the main mouth path, which allowed me to keyframe each extremity with the teeth already hidden by their mattes
that way, later on if you need to tweak the extremity positions for any reason you dont need to re set up your teeth mattes every time, because the matte paths will follow the main path without needing their own keyframes :)

Hi Cai, I guess this is very close to your tip, but anyway, this is how I do it: Even before animation, I copy the lips with all properties linked: (CMD + ALT + C), and paste with CMD + V. The now new layer I turn into a matte for the upper teeth and then I duplicate this matte layer for the lower teeth and the back of mouth. All three matte layers will update along with the visible lips as you change it's path. So no need to set keyframes for any of the matte layers in the whole process. Hope this helps someone out there! Happy rigging! :)

You have an older version of Joysticks and Sliders
You need after effect 2018 or greater
The tongue problem could be mayybe solved if the tongue you have is already included in the joystick and slider and added opacity expression that's linked to on/off button? might work, not sure tho :D
so the question is linking opacity to slider really. i'm trying to figure that out now.

- It turns out it was because I was using Adobe 2017 rather than 2018. Turns out that 2017 doesn't allow joysticks to use paths as a manipulation tool.

I have Adobe 2018 and it doesn't work either...! Nothing happens to my shape when I create the joystick. I don't understand if there's any other setting to apply..?
Thanks for posting. However, joysticks only allow for 5 expressions. What if I want to create 9 mouth expressions? Should I use Sliders instead?
hi, not an expert here, but my advice would be to create and rig 2 separate mouth rigs with the same attachment to the head but with different mouth positions and switch them on and off.

What did happen at 5:10 exactly?
The top mouth layer that I'd need to reshape to make my mouths doesn't do anything because the tutorial doesn't explain that. It only shows how to create the mouth and not how to rig it properly. Could you please help?
Thanks for your question. The purpose of this tutorial wasn't to show you how to use "Joysticks n sliders" but more about the key poses I used to rig a mouth with "Joysticks n sliders". There are 5 key poses used to create a rig with "Joysticks n sliders" and you need to keyframe the path/position/rotation ect... of each moving part in order for the joystick to work. So I would suggest making sure you have a keyframe for every moving value in every one of your 5 frames. Or you can check out this tutorial and see how to rig and then come back and see if this video makes a little more sense. Sorry for any confusion, best of luck!

@@GabsMarcoMusic I haven't seen a video that rigs the mouth in the way that I have, so what I would suggest is getting a little bit more familiar with how Joysticks n sliders works then come back to this video and see if it makes more sense. I can't seem to make a smooth line with a lip illustration i made from after effects. So jagged. I know how to use pen tool but shiyet. So hard
I made the stroke with a Vegas effect (so that the thickness does not change). I made a mouth rig the same as yours. But when I move the values on the joystick, the teeth do not move (although on frames they should move along the position). Please tell me what could be wrong?
ik thats late. jus to help anyone else having the same problem make sure you selected the teeth keyframes with the mouth's while making the joystick

I've spent nearly four hours trying to get my mouth path to move with my joystick and it just doesn't work.. How do I transfer the path keyframes to the position of the object so the joystick is able to manipulate the keyframes in turn allowing the character to speak! Any help is appreciated I need this for a project I'm working on

Luiz Fernando I used a plug-in called “joysticks n sliders”. It’s an amazing tool that takes 2D elements in after effects and gives you the ability to fake 3D. I highly recommend it!

me too.. the path of the shape layer doesn't animate.. only position and rotation.
@@alizulfaqqar I now understand why! It s because the plugins not rendering in real time. You have to do your differents shapes path poses, then use josticknsliders's "create a new joystick button". That allows you to link your joystick to your poses. THEN add your key frames animation on the joystick position, and THEN clic on the refresh button. It will keying every frame of the shape layer path you've created before. So now when you launch your previsualisation it will be animated! ;) Understand?

okay i have a Problem... i drawed 3 positions of a thumb, i want him to slide up and down on the phone screen... how do i manage this one? i mean there are 3 png files of one object -> how to make the positions invisable and still have the Animation?

Hi, from what I can understand about your question it seems your hand movement is very minimal. If this is the case I would suggest NOT doing the complete rig, like I have in this tutorial, but simply animating the rotation of each joint in the thumb. Make sense?
@@backwoodsanimation yes makes sense, but i have png files of the hand and the 3 pngs of different thumb positions. my problem is that i dont understand how to let the other positions disappear but also have a smooth transition between the positions.. sry for the bad english i hope you understand what im trying to say

It's very unclear how you actually make Joysticks work after you finished the 5 keyframes...
1) на 1-м кадре выделить все ключи. Нажать "Origin".
2) на 2-ом кадре нажимаем "Origin" и должны появится все ключи. меняем форму рта. И так же на остальных кадрах.
3) Выделяем все 5 кадры и жмем "создать новый джойстик" (под джойстик инструменты).
В теории должно получится, но на моей конструкции зубы не двигаются. Напишите, если у вас получится))

How tf is this a tutorial lol. You should've shown exactly how you rigged the paths. All I know is using position with the plugin. *sigh* This doesn't show how to animate the mouth
there's the main joysticks and sliders tut for that one, that's what i did but i wish it was a bit more thorough too.
