I've had similar doubts since I've been relegated to online play, and one of the biggest things that the online era has really affected is the shift in perception that there is always a "correct" way to play and win. We forget that fighting games are a conversation with our opponent. I can sit next to a person and play them, and suddenly I understand so much about who they are, and so much more about myself -- I've built a genuine human connection without the use of words.
If you don't feel this grinding online, then I think it's easy to question the value of an exercise that doesn't result in that human connection, and ultimately forces instrumental play in service of a rank that many folks take as the measure of their own self worth.
The human connection is the real value and the thing worth chasing. The grind is in service of learning to become a better communicator, and the outcome of the game is a byproduct of that.

"The true *insert activity here* was the friends we made along the way"
It's used as a meme, but it's basically like 80% of the truth regarding fulfillment when the activity/hobby requires more than one person to have value
And definitely, what you're saying about it being "easy to question the value of an exercise that doesn't result in that human connection" is right on the money. When you learn to speak "correctly" (or more correctly than the average person) you start seeing all the bullshit they ramble on and on about, you start to respond to them in a way that makes them not get away with what they're trying to do, while giving you a small boost confidence that you were able to shut'em up. This works for both a conversation and a SF conversation/match. You can see if they like to take up every possible opportunity to talk over you, or if they're patient at listening to you, to then respond accordingly

Feel that brother. Im going to be 30 this year. Got let go from my esports job and have been pretty miserable getting back to "normal work" i enjoy the work I do, but I think the reality is diversity in your lifestyle and finding enjoyment in small moments is becoming really paramount for me as I age to feel like Im getting the most out of the cards im dealt, while I work towards something more fulfilling.

My suggestion is, ask yourself two questions:
    1. What are my core values?
    2. Is what I am doing aligning with my core values?
Motivation is fleeting, discipline is lasting, and burnout is inevitable, because how much reward you get for your work will always vary while responsibilities increase.

Dude, thank you so much for making that video and sharing that with us. As I was watching it, it actually felt like you were sharing it with me! Haha. I've been through those same thoughts over and over through my life, and I am now starting to find meaning and enjoyment in what I do, but it's a mix of finding the right things and perhaps also reframing your expectations. I'm training to be a counsellor, and I've also found a particular type of game that I enjoy. Plus my wife and I have decided to live apart, which may sound bad (and is sometimes lonely) but has actually enabled me to enjoy life more by looking inwards to me, rather than outwards to what others want and expect.
Anyway, big respect and love for the video. I wanna say "I'm here to chat if you need", but I realise we don't know each other, so that's weird! Haha 👊💜

I'm in my 30s and still can't hold a job I like or find anything I enjoy. Been working since 18 and only make enough to survive. Living in this society is shit.

Another banger. Wild how this comes out right as im questioning my motivation for both my career and my participation in the FGC
like... am i doing these things for the right reason? Which we can assume is "for the fun/for the fulfillment", or am i just doing it for a result, just to get a "good job" to reaffirm myself?

i turn 20 at the end of the month and honest to GOD what the fuck is going on. maybe my brain is developing after i quit the weed, idk if this is even related to the topic really, but the more i think about what i genuinely enjoy the more i realize that "me being cringe" is literally just me as a person LMFAO like at my core i think that is who i am and what i enjoy the most out of life is just being weird asf and seeing peoples faces. or like being ass at street fighter, working at burger king, living with my parents. its crazy to see people gawk at celebrities on tv's, people online or whatever because its like that one scene in mid90s "you wouldn't trade your shit with their shit" because thats your personal shine, your personality, YOU. traditionally working hard to achieve something thats not you doesn't HAVE to be for you and thats whats so beautiful about the quote from Sacred Text

Get into a real fighting game, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Extremely rewarding journey that myself and many others enjoy the process of grinding the work

I did Taekwondo for like 11 years when I was younger then had to quit because of an injury. I started watching a lot more combat sports recently (MMA, Muay Thai) and started to remember a lot of the stuff that I learned when I was a kid like discipline and training wise. Reminded me of how rewarding it was for me when I was younger and didnt realize it in the moment.

If you're an MMA fan, even better! It's super rewarding when you see yourself improve + the workout is insane. @@AndyLO2
