Except for the space wolves. While it shows you are a badass in the chapter it also shows that you are a weirdo who hangs out with the Ultramarines, the Blood Ravens and Russ forbid, the Dark Angels.
The deathwatch were formed 2000yrs after the Horus heresy because the orks brought the entire Imperium to its knees. We're talking an ork version of the death star teleporting above Terra. The Imperial Fists chapter getting wiped out to a man, a loyalist primarch (spoilers) getting killed by a mega-ork. The Imperium was so unprepared that in the aftermath, the grand master of assassins killed all high lords of terra, and the inquisition formalised the deathwatch formations made up of survivors from various marine chapters.
I relly like the Deathwatch, I think just the idea of having so many different traditions of different chapters, coupled with the relative freedom of doing as they like so long as it gets the job done, can lead to some really interesting interactions.
One of my favorite fan fics was about a Black Templar who had to hide his psychic abilities from his brothers until he joined the deathwatch. He ended up dying to defeat a bloodletter, but his brothers memorialized him all the same, never knowing he was a psycher.
For many chapters it's a matter of pride to have members transferred to the Deathwatch. The Ultramarines or the Salamanders would throw a party for that. For other chapters, that's a way to send away space marines who they don't like.

You know from the perspective of a Space marine, that could be a trick of a Xeno species to summon a "god" that could destroy the entire imperium instead of Slaanesh, but that Chaos falling's stuff was not so loyal to say
I always fancied the idea of running Deathwatch and naming, backstorying, etc each and every individual character, their tensions and friendships with other chapters within their battle brothers, etc.
Deathwatch is my favorite faction in all of WH40k. I’ve dove deep into the lore of all the universe but I always come back to Deathwatch. Just something about elite task forces comprised of different chapters and personalities on suicide missions where anything goes to accomplish the task that is freakin badass to me.
The underrated group compared to the Grey knights Sisters of silence and Custodes while being one of the most interesting concepts and imho kinda better then some of the latter with how different the brothers can be while fighting crazy Xenos instead of deamons a Deathwatch book would be fucking LIT ngl
Shadow Breaker by Steve Parker, it’s awesome, 16 hr audio book, and it’s all DW, fighting tau, kroot, Genestealers, aaaand more!! I’ll stop there not to spoil anything
I think they felt special in earlier editions where you could take one kill team as a sort off super Vanguard squad they felt special but now they just feel like another chapter with some funky lore.

i don't play deathwatch myself but the deathwatch combat patrol was a great way to break up the monotony of painting the same green space marines all the time for my dark angels. cause aside from their specific units you can always just make some deathwatch with the heraldry of your chapter of choice for a bit of variety in your army
Now I can't speak in terms of the Tabletop for any of this stuff, but I tell you what, playing with all this stuff in a TTRPG setting is insane, The Deathwatch get absolutely batshit tier equipment, that said, they have to deal with issues that very much warrant the use of it. But a very cool chapter nonetheless
Ironically, they are also used as escort for diplomatic missions with xenos. In fact, they are the most suitable to negotiate with the xenos besides an ordos xenos inquisitor.

The Deathwatch is also the place Chapters dump their “problem” Astartes. Watch Angels of Death. Khazarion gets dumped into the Watch when he begins to succumb to the Black Rage. His Brothers even get pissed when he actually survives his Service and returns. “Sacrificed to Duty.” He snarls at them. Oh, and the forced psychological torture while being strapped onto a table is another thing….
Fun fact there's actually an entire tabletop RPG where you can play as a Deathwatch kill team creatively named Deathwatch. It's made by the same people who made the Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader rpgs and so follows the same d100 based system but instead of mortals you're massively powerful space marines who kill hordes of mortals as mooks basically. Also fun fact you can play a Minotaur in it and they have a special trait called "Rivalry (Every Astartes Chapter)."
The ceremony for each chapter when a brother goes to the Death Watch is fun. Each is unique but the one I love is how thr Dark Angels mad dog the marine and threaten them to silence all the while masked in a sword passing ceremony.

Could also use it for some political intrugue (Inquisition). If they ever make a Space Marine 3 game, would be a great next step for Titus, given his experience with Orks and Tyranids. He would make a perfect addition to the Furor Shield, to help fix the Inquisition's fuck-up with the Octarius War.
Hey man, I want to say you have a great taste in books. I just started the talos book series you recommend in your night lord video and its been great! Talos is a fantastically done character and also setptimus ans Octavia are good also. I'm using audible, so I only use the 1 credit a month, but what other books do you recommend I read the first 2 ciaphas cain books and thats all
As a fellow audible enjoyer, when you have an extra credit and need another book that isn’t so focused on the imperium and imperium adjacent factions, I highly recommend “The Infinite and the Divine” it’s probably the best necron book and one of the best books from black library. For some series I recommend the Gaunt’s Ghosts books for imperial guard stories, the Fabius bile trilogy for some crazy traitor action, and the eisenhorn main series of books for scratching that inquisitorial intrigue itch. I have so many individual books in my audible library it would take forever to recommend all the best of them. But I hope this poorly written comment gives you a good starting point for some new books.

Anything for a fellow new fan. Having a novel like that spoiled is An unfortunate situation for sure, still a good listen if you ever feel like listening to it. Fabius Bile is the former chief apothecary of the Emperor’s Children legion, so he works more with his gene father Fulgrim, and even then he doesn’t like what his primarch has become. I’m not sure about him working with Angron since I haven’t had a chance to listen to any of the new book releases in a few months, so I’m not sure what interaction the two have had. The most recently released audiobooks I’ve listened to are “Only in Death” which is a fairly old Gaunt’s Ghosts book and “The End and the Death Part 1” which is the most recent siege of terra book so nothing particularly relevant currently. I do know Bile is the antagonist in the new book “Genefather” so maybe that has more information you’re looking for
Old forgotten lore: Genestealer ork hybrids are welcome in the clan as normal members and actually disrupt brood telepathy, have no interest in helping the patriarch, and will be openly hostile to actual tyranids. But this is also dating back to the time of tinboyz, so kind of abandonded lore. But still kind of a cool idea
I personally made my own black watch kill team and one of my favorite characters from that group is a iron warrior who was unwilling inducted into the iron warriors but managed to resist the brainwashing and escape to the imperium where he pleaded his case and was deemed a useful tool for the imperium. He ended up becoming a black shield, and is a stellar tech marine using the leeway that the legion provides to Greta effect with modified terminator armor and many other wonky and otherwise heretical inventions which include a bottled and purged portion of the warp which allows psykers to not worry about demon possession.
Always loved the Deathwatch, mostly because Xcom 2 is one of my favorite games and they remind me of it. Plus the whole marines from multiple chapters appealed to me, I always wondered what type of culture would form out of it and how would they see other chapters after their time in the Deathwatch.
Fun fact: the animosity was accounted for, and so every deathwatch member is trained to the point of exhaustion. Yes, their training space marines that hard, and so because of this, hell training chapters that normally HATE each other get along pretty well cause "hey if their willing to help me up this hill cause I'm dead tired then i can put away my animosity"

I love the Deathwatch. I seriously do not understand why xenos are considered potential allies against Chaos instead of the other way around. Old Night was 100x worse than Chaos and no xeno regrets it. People forget that.
All my Space Marine classes in Space Marine 2 are all Deathwatch. My Tactical is a Void Trident Deathwatch, My Sniper is a Raven guard Deathwatch, My Heavy is a Blackshield Deathwatch, My Bulwark is a Templar Deathwatch and my Vanguard is a Blood Raven Deathwatch. 1. Cool left Deathwatch Pauldron 2. The left silver gauntlet 3. The Deathwatch left leg armor 4. The color red lines in the knee pad on the RIGHT leg armor 5. A chapter colors for the right pauldron. All other parts of the armor must be Abbadon Black. All available to everyone who preordered Space Marine 2
The Deathwatch are pretty tight. My space marine chapter acts as sort of a green team to the local DW watch station , helping them train and acting as rapid replacement if shit goes bad. If they’re acting as rapid replacement they wear black shields and will leave as soon as tithed marines show up to replace them. When they’re back with my chapter they do get to continue wearing the DW pauldron on the opposite shoulder.
Dang...before landing on Ultramarines, I was considering Salamanders or Death Watch and have even made plans on abandoning my first born Ultras and Getting new marine deathwatch...Dang.

Old forgotten lore: Genestealer ork hybrids are welcome in the clan as normal members and actually disrupt brood telepathy, have no interest in helping the patriarch, and will be openly hostile to actual tyranids. But this is also dating back to the time of tinboyz, so kind of abandonded lore. But still kind of a cool idea
I personally made my own black watch kill team and one of my favorite characters from that group is a iron warrior who was unwilling inducted into the iron warriors but managed to resist the brainwashing and escape to the imperium where he pleaded his case and was deemed a useful tool for the imperium. He ended up becoming a black shield, and is a stellar tech marine using the leeway that the legion provides to Greta effect with modified terminator armor and many other wonky and otherwise heretical inventions which include a bottled and purged portion of the warp which allows psykers to not worry about demon possession.
Always loved the Deathwatch, mostly because Xcom 2 is one of my favorite games and they remind me of it.
Plus the whole marines from multiple chapters appealed to me, I always wondered what type of culture would form out of it and how would they see other chapters after their time in the Deathwatch.

Fun fact: the animosity was accounted for, and so every deathwatch member is trained to the point of exhaustion. Yes, their training space marines that hard, and so because of this, hell training chapters that normally HATE each other get along pretty well cause "hey if their willing to help me up this hill cause I'm dead tired then i can put away my animosity"

I love the Deathwatch. I seriously do not understand why xenos are considered potential allies against Chaos instead of the other way around. Old Night was 100x worse than Chaos and no xeno regrets it. People forget that.

All my Space Marine classes in Space Marine 2 are all Deathwatch. My Tactical is a Void Trident Deathwatch, My Sniper is a Raven guard Deathwatch, My Heavy is a Blackshield Deathwatch, My Bulwark is a Templar Deathwatch and my Vanguard is a Blood Raven Deathwatch.
1. Cool left Deathwatch Pauldron
2. The left silver gauntlet
3. The Deathwatch left leg armor
4. The color red lines in the knee pad on the RIGHT leg armor
5. A chapter colors for the right pauldron.
All other parts of the armor must be Abbadon Black.

Wow I feel attacked, Chose Deathwatch as my 1st army because I didn’t want to be Salamanders
The Deathwatch are pretty tight. My space marine chapter acts as sort of a green team to the local DW watch station , helping them train and acting as rapid replacement if shit goes bad. If they’re acting as rapid replacement they wear black shields and will leave as soon as tithed marines show up to replace them. When they’re back with my chapter they do get to continue wearing the DW pauldron on the opposite shoulder.
Dang...before landing on Ultramarines, I was considering Salamanders or Death Watch and have even made plans on abandoning my first born Ultras and Getting new marine deathwatch...Dang.
