Hey all! Sorry about the strange audio rattle on some of the clips. I think my microphone cable was a tad bit loose. :( Don't forget to enter the next mapping contest that will be launched Friday 12/25 on the WASD20 Discord server: discord.gg/hKFsESk Happy Holidays!
He’s a bit of a hidden gem one would say. Other than that I heard he even used to be a forehead model, but blew the competition away and got bored of it.
You saying how old the Narnia movies are now was like a punch in the gut lol. I basically learned to read with the Narnia books, and my parents made me finish The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe before I was allowed to go see it in the theatre when it came out.
This was great! I saw the title, immediately thought to write "You should check out the Forbidden Lands maps" and then saw your first review! Love it! Haha!
The Hot Springs Island map reminds me a lot of a pixel art colab kind of style. It really seems to help set the viewer's expectation of what they will find in a specific area, and I think is a great idea for an RPG map
The Edge Chronicles maps by Chris Riddell, specifically the Deepwood map. Okay, okay, I know this is a fantasy series made for children but Chris Riddells illustrations, and specifically his map of the Edge in the first age of flight, paired with his map of the third age pair perfectly to help you imagine the sheer scale of this world. These maps blew my mind as a kid going into my teenage years, and still are a sight to behold today, I would highly recommend you check them out
Just found this channel and I really like the fantasy map creation part of it! The official Vvardenfell map from the game Morrowind is still my all time favourite map and I have not seen anything that comes close to it. It's pleasant to look at, has a lot of detail and does a great job at highlighting important locations just enough without ignoring the areas around them.
Wow, that dungeon map was so beautiful. Please, please, any future DMs don't keep that from us, I would love that dungeon getting slapped down on the table. Mad respect to all these artists.
Have you seen the work of Misty Beee and Jsteven/Sirinkman? They're both some of the most skilled map makers and pretty prominent in the community, but I've never heard you talk about them.
Hey, I am an aspiring fantasy author and one of my biggest problems is how the world should look. I just keep second guessing myself. Does anyone have some tips or tricks to make better maps?
Pretty well out of the realms of fantasy, but I like the map of Bullworth. It was pretty interesting to me that one city had all these areas that were so different from each other. There were all these distinct landmarks, and the whole city seemed to be divided into regions that differed wildly between each other in terms of atmosphere and aesthetic, but these transitions were pretty seamless, and everything was beautiful even when it wasn't. The town of Bullworth was just loads of fun to wander around in and explore.
My favorite is the map of Gotham city that was designed by an actual cartographer who knew how cities functioned. It’s amazing and beautiful and I wish I could make a physical model of it
Growing up as a kid, I loved the Magnamund maps published in the Lone Wolf Gamebooks. I copied this style whenever I had to create a map for whatever reason.
My favorite map currently is Le Yamamura's Creature map, she places the different creature's silhouette where they habit and the colors and composition of the maps are really cool.
I would absolutely love to hear your thoughts on the maps of Paravia (Athera) from Janny Wurts' high fantasy novel series "The Wars of Light & Shadow" - Janny not only writes the series, but has drawn the maps AND painted many of the covers too!
The map of Final Fantasy 6 is also really good. The World of Balance and inversely the World of Ruin. The World of Ruin is like the World of Balance if it got hit by a nuke. It all needed to be a flat world to make it work for the 2D character sprites.
Have you seen the maps in a series of games called Kingdom Rush? It's a Tower Defense Game. The maps in it are super good and got the same kind of cartoonish style as Jason Thompson's map in the video.
Sad that I didn't see some love for the map of Throne from Kill 6 Billion Demons! It's such an evocative story-map like the Narnia one but with some bright, cartoony stylistic flourish of something like the Hot Springs.
Just in case you ever get the chance to meet Doug to shoot shot about maps, just a heads-up that the name "Kovacs" is usually pronounces such that the second syllable rhymes with "watch". It's a slavic-to-English spelling bastardization thing, so don't feel bad.
Hello everyone. I’ve never played dnd but one of my favorite youtubers is in a game that they post online and I’ve been hooked on it. Made me want to play with my own friends. I have a question, how hard is it to be DM, for complete new players? Is it doable? We’re just doing it for fun but I want to make sure it’s enjoyable.
Gotta say I never really got the mountain ranges of Mordor. They are so... square. With a lot of the other symbolism being round shaped it throws me off a bit.
Seeing the last one really reminded me of a favourite map from my childhood reading: the Edge Chronicles (drawn by Chris Riddell). Check it out: edgechronicles.co.uk/media/2016/05/edge-chronicles-map-the-edge.jpg
Hey nate! Merry Christmas! I just wanted to know what your favorite dnd official Adventure is. I wanted to know because I am wanting to run one but don't know which one to get.
What I'm taking away from this is that I should stop making huge empty maps and instead make smaller more detailed ones... I should have come to that conclusion a lot earlier, but I'm known for overlooking the most obvious of things, so well... Guess I'll redo some older maps now...
These are great maps, but the only ones I'd call mind blowing are the Doug Kovacs map and the Runehammer map. I was really expecting more innovative maps on this list like those two. I feel like you didn't really play out the importance of how original the layouts make those maps.
I found none of the maps especially practical or outstandingly beautiful. The Forbidden Lands map is actually a big hinderance to the game (playing FB right now 6 sessions in)
Hey WASD20, thank you for the shoutout and kind words! Much appreciated!
Hey! Glad you found the vid! Keep up the awesome work.

Happy Holidays!
Doesn't matter
But wait, when is the contest?
I haven't seen anything about it
Coming Friday.
@@WASD20 nice
There’s a pretty good map maker that has made some stunning maps. Surprised I didn’t see any of his maps in the video. His name? Nate.
Never heard of him. Can you tell me more about this gentleman?
He’s a bit of a hidden gem one would say. Other than that I heard he even used to be a forehead model, but blew the competition away and got bored of it.
I agree, he does make some pretty good maps.😀
Sounds like you finna blow this guy
3:11 Ah yes Dankwood, the dankest of woods, my favorite.
It has a sister city that is pretty cool, Dankbush.
You saying how old the Narnia movies are now was like a punch in the gut lol. I basically learned to read with the Narnia books, and my parents made me finish The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe before I was allowed to go see it in the theatre when it came out.
What a selection! I was pleasantly surprised to see DCC and Hank's work featured here.
This makes me want to draw some more maps because I haven’t in a while
Me too
7:26 don't demean the great city of war drobe in the land of spare oom.
Cute. Lol
wow these are incredible. really makes me wanna start designing my own.
Do it
Do it you coward
Personally I love the map of the Beleriand in Tolkiens Silmarillion.
This was great! I saw the title, immediately thought to write "You should check out the Forbidden Lands maps" and then saw your first review! Love it! Haha!
Have you seen Dishonored's map? Absolutely astonishing
Definitely will check it out. Thanks!
@@WASD20 thank you for responding
your tutorials are really good and helped me a lot in mapmaking
Just wanna say thank you so much for your map tutorials, they have improved my maps tenfold
At 10:50 that Runehammer map of Ghost Mountain looks like something Dr Seuss would draw.
Yeah, I can see that.
The Hot Springs Island map reminds me a lot of a pixel art colab kind of style. It really seems to help set the viewer's expectation of what they will find in a specific area, and I think is a great idea for an RPG map
2:20 Forbidden Lands!
THAT"S what that darn game is called!
had to come all the way back here for that, haha
Great video! Here from Cavegeeks channel, looking forward to seeing more of your stuff, your presentation is really enjoyable

Awesome video Nate! So enjoying this series - discovering so many great cartographers!
P.S Got the drivethrurpg email yesterday - much appreciated!!!
Maxime's Map is my map i had commissioned for my D&D Campaign, weird seeing it in this video
MERRY CHRISTMAS NATE!!!
Thanks, Logan! To you too.
"I should do another one of these in the future" (said 3 years ago....)

I clicked on this video wondering if Morrowind would make an appearance. Spent so many hours looking at that masterpiece.
Wow, that dungeon map was so beautiful. Please, please, any future DMs don't keep that from us, I would love that dungeon getting slapped down on the table. Mad respect to all these artists.
The crazy art in DCC products is wonderful.
Have you seen the work of Misty Beee and Jsteven/Sirinkman? They're both some of the most skilled map makers and pretty prominent in the community, but I've never heard you talk about them.
Yes! I love Misty Beee! Never heard of the other, but definitely going to have a look.
Hey, I am an aspiring fantasy author and one of my biggest problems is how the world should look. I just keep second guessing myself. Does anyone have some tips or tricks to make better maps?
The first map that I liked, and got me hooked on D&D and fantasy in general, was the poster size map in the _World of Greyhawk_ supplement.
Great map! I think it was by Darlene.
I followed the how to draw fantasy maps and it was great
Dang Nate almost to 200k!!!! Excellent
Thanks, Jake! Not a bad Christmas gift. :D
Just realized
Amazing

love the Narnia map. I love Narnia and everything to do with it.
My favorite is the map of Gotham city that was designed by an actual cartographer who knew how cities functioned. It’s amazing and beautiful and I wish I could make a physical model of it
6:00 I thought the map of HOT SPRINGS ISLAND was a map from DEATH ROBOT JUNGLE for a second
Growing up as a kid, I loved the Magnamund maps published in the Lone Wolf Gamebooks. I copied this style whenever I had to create a map for whatever reason.
The Doug Kovacs map really brought to mind REH's Conan stories and the Marvel comics adaptations of the 70's! Cool stuff!
My favourite is the Telduria map. I love classic continental maps with colors.
i had this commissioned years ago, it was made for A0 size so its Giant
THAT STREAM WAS LEGENDARY! As is the map - great video!
Thanks!
My favorite map currently is Le Yamamura's Creature map, she places the different creature's silhouette where they habit and the colors and composition of the maps are really cool.

I really love the map of the Half Continent from the Monster Blood Tattoo series by DM Cornish.
haha thanks for the holler brother!
Some good maps. Some aren't particularly skillful but classic.
Yeah it’s the class I love
The map of Final Fantasy 6 is also really good. The World of Balance and inversely the World of Ruin. The World of Ruin is like the World of Balance if it got hit by a nuke. It all needed to be a flat world to make it work for the 2D character sprites.
I'm running a Theros game, so edge of the world sounds very awesome to me

Will have to check it out. Thanks for the tip!
My all time favorite list is for now populated by:
1 Europe
2 Tamriel
I'm trying to make a map that has very little flaws. I am not very neat though so its taking me awhile.
If you haven't check Anna Meyer's greyhawk map
It’s great. Mentioned that one in my last video that I linked at the beginning.
@@WASD20 oh right on. I just recently started building a Greyhawk campaign and Iv been pouring over it and watching her videos on the Greyhawk Channel
Just found this channel and hear about the edge of the world contest now I’m wondering if my cartographer entered it or if it was a different one
Looking at those maps makes me want to start working on a custom high-detailed map😀👍
whoever didn't put the misty bee middle earth map on here is gonna catch these hands

Everyone chant with me!

Anyone know where to find Meln world maps?

Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden.
Middle-Earth will forever remain the greatest fantasy map of all time.
I have the Narnia map in my room
Hm, this is strange, because the forbidden lands map literally goes against ALL of the 10 map making rules you posted about a few videos ago.
You mean two years ago? Try this one. :)

Runehammer is awesome. I thought his name was Hank Ferinale.
He has many names.
the dungeon looks like a guy with a pan
lmaoo true
Can you review the map in the Falling Kingdoms series by Morgan Rodes
I live in Dankwood 😎
Me love maps wow

I found none of the maps especially practical or outstandingly beautiful. The Forbidden Lands map is actually a big hinderance to the game (playing FB right now 6 sessions in)
To be honest, the only one I like here is the Narnia one.
