3:16 I assumed the idea was that each font on the map was meant to indicate writing style at the named location and thus differentiate the different cultures based on the font used. So like, you can assume the people who live in The Umbral Forest and the people who live in Wildflower Forest are more closely related than either of them are to the people who live in Craggy forest.
Did you intend for it to give a very grimdark tone? When I first saw it I immediately thought it gave off the atmosphere and tone of a very bleak and oppressive setting.
My top three 1. NOVAS CRATER 2. ATREIA 3. YDRIAN These videos make me wanna just buckle down and improve my drawings, but I have so much reading and writing to do. The problem with Fantasy is that there is so much to love.
10:05 The roads also look to much like rivers in their course. The way nearly all of them seem to meet in a Y with a steep angle. Look at Vulcandorf, despite being quite large all the roads nearby seem to go away from it.
6:23 I can't help but wonder if it's like that because, maybe at one time there was a catastrophic supernatural geological event in the now-called "Wastes" that caused the mountains surrounding it to be literally pushed away from the epicenter. Also since none of the other mountains are drawn that way.
Atreia looks like a zoomed in map of a smaller area, which would explain the lone mountai nand all the forest around it if this is like a single Duchy or County. Ben B's map looks like a twisted Westeros.
On the map at 5:00 , I just noticed that part of the shape of the Albion subcontinent is actually _really_ close to the map in Fable, but only if you look at it upside down! Good way to get inspired, without the influence being really noticeable
I would like to see more in depth critiques, like going into detail about the geography, how the rivers affect the farming capabilities, or how the city and town placement is good or bad strategically etc. So far all these videos are just critiquing drawing capabilities, not real world understanding of placement.
Nate! I've never watched one of your Map Videos yet, so this was new to me and it completely blew me away. The artistic value of each map as well as your critique of what was good and what could use improvement really added value. If a novice/never drew a map in their life guy can love a video, I can only imagine what this means to those who do create maps. Kudos on combining your talent as an artist and as a teacher once again.
I just finished my very first map by following your tutorials. I've never been much of an artist in that regard, but I managed to make a fairly decent map. At least enough to impress my kids.
Okay havent watched your stuff in a while and i was kinda shocked my Griffgard Empire map (the map at 10:00) and i will try and mark the roads better next time thanks for the advise.
I really like these videos, but some critiques are very "stylistic" and part of an artistic decision. The map on 10:50, for instance, reminds me of some very real European medieval maps that give priority to rivers and roads equally, since those were the means of locomotion. I actually like more the maps that are more "in-world" instead of trying to make a pseudo-realistic one that invariably ends up mimicking Tolkien's maps.
I disagree with the critique on the roads on the map at 11:00. I agree that it looks a bit messy, but I really enjoy that style. If I were to suggest anything it'd probably be to just clean it up. I can see how it can be mistaken for a river network, but I'd think that keeping a consistent width on the 'roads' would give it a more man-made feel to it and overall improve the clarity. Then maybe for flavor add bridges over the river crossings. Depending on the area it can be more eccentric or simple i.e. a highway or a village's access road.
good stuff , so if i wanted to use this software could i download and print out my maps , but what if i wanted a larger than average would a copy center do it
I participated in your first contest it was amazing motivation to finish build a world. If you are planning on doing another one, do you have a rough date that that might happen?
So I’m not a fan of 5:07 took names of already named lands from other series. Like Skellige in the Witcher is an archipelago, I’m not a fan of just copying others work. It’s why I’ve restarted my fantasy world 100 times. It’s still a lovely drawn map.
I mean yeah Albion is from fable, but its also just a traditional name for Great Britain so I feel like its unfair to call it a reference to a video game.
Albion is also the name used in most adaptations of King Arthur/ Merlin/ etc I understand that Albion is often used because the story of King Arthur was set in Great Britain, but a lot of the adaptations are nothing like actual Britain/ Albion
hey nate just one thiing, did you know that wearing a hatst make your hare grow a lot faster. just saiyng because in lots of your videos you use hats. ps:ime half spnish and my seling is not perfect, sorry :(

Like, I can’t believe you liked it! You just made my day sir!! Thank you very much! (Nova’s Crater @11:08)
Real good
The area at 13:10 with the trees in the water looks reminiscent of a mangrove forest/wetland to me :)

I wish that were true, but unfortunately is not. I realized when it was too late I was using too many fonts. :/
@@weaksquare Ha! Dang, well that's a cool idea for me to file away for my own maps, then! Great work nevertheless!

I started teaching my kids D&D using the information on this channel. TY for the great content🤓👍🏽
So awesome! Very original and super eye-catching! What program did you make it in?

Good morning everyone
It IS a good morning. Thank you.
13:50 Probably that are roads and the black lines are rivers.
I was thinking that to, but that would mean that there are loads of rivers all over the map.
I thought I was the only one to think that.
I think the black lines are political borders, ie country, state, province, etc
@@JacksonOwex that's also a possibility🤔
Very good video, my favourite part was the sponsor which I didn’t skip through and I like when he looked at the maps too

Ben B's map reminds me of Westeros in Game of Thrones.

Mate! at 14:00 you took the streets for rivers! :-) the rivers are the dark lines the double lines are streets. :-)))))
I agree that you need to change the mountains a little on the second map. I didn't see them at first.
I just finished my very first map by following your tutorials. I've never been much of an artist in that regard, but I managed to make a fairly decent map. At least enough to impress my kids.

How would you make a map for a tiny person in a huge world?
Like Arrietty or Bugs Life. I love this idea but don't know how to implement it.
You could make the map of a small forest the focus of your adventure, with fields and hedges being the 'land borders into the wild unknown'.
AWW MAN I literally just drew my first map with your help YESTERDAY! lol
Samarkand is a country in David Eddings' Elenium trilogy, I think. Maybe his Tamuli trilogy.
He was also right about it being a city in Uzbekistan. I thought it sounded familiar, too.
It's also in Fable. This seems to be a fan creating a full world map of Fable, something it didn't have before.
Great work eveyone!

Albion from fable, skellige and valen from The Witcher, man that map is so creative you know lol

Cheers Nate! Is there any program/app in your field of vision of mapmaking what I can use to create star/galactic maps for sci-fi games?

Well, when a city called Bowerstone also appears in this map of Albion, I think it’s pretty clear that it’s a Fable reference.
WASD20 I’ve never played Fable, (and I’m a huge fan of BBC’s Merlin) so I just had to give my opinion XD
Yeah, Albion is definitely very commonly used in history and fiction. One of my favorite book series is the Albion Trilogy by Stephen Lawhead.
