- Welcome to my new series, you've likely heard about how 4Kids censored One Piece when bringing it to the west, but you probably didn't know just how much they actually changed!
I've gone through every second of animation in order to list every change 4Kids made when localizing One Piece, starting with episodes 1-8 (Romance Dawn Arc).

That's even a plot hole in the base show like all these guys use sea prism stone against Devil fruit users why not sea water?
A devil fruit user has to be at least knee deep in water to be weakened by it. For example a devil fruit user would not be affected by rain drops. Oda explained this in an interview. Also we see this in Logue town, where none of the devil fruit users are affected by rain. So no a water gun would not do anything to devil fruit users

If I recall correctly, the reason why 4Kids removed a lot of text, even if it was in English, was to make localization to other languages easier. It's part of the reason why a lot of other countries used 4Kids' footage when localizing shows they dubbed.
Its also because they got shipped blank animation cells without layers on them. Thats how they were able to edit the scenes so well.
@@selfloathingweekly I don't know if that was ever the case in this show, especially since I think the Funimation prints still have the text, but I know it definitely was the case for Sonic X.
The uncut episodes of Sonic X on Hulu have a lot of blank signs on them that was originally English text. They probably had the same international distribution mentality that 4Kids had.

Remember they even didn't want in the first place it came with a package deal what the deal with Doremi and Shaman King
It's reputation died when people realised it grows too quickly to actually watch if you haven't before. The plot doesn't go anywhere

What baffles me is that they went through the trouble of changing every single cigarette to look like the stem of a lollipop, when they could’ve just added the red ball when it was necessary. It already looks like a lollipop stem! Just remove the smoke and you’re good!

I think the weirdest change was changing Bazooka to Double Barrel. That's still a reference to a gun.
The reason they remove English text is because 4kids isn’t just localizing for English speaking audiences. They were altering it for a western audience in general, so their versions would be dubbed in multiple languages, not just english
They didn't remove it, they just requested blank animation cells they could easily edit.

I always found gum gum bazooka the weirdest change. If it's about protecting kids how many kids do you think have access to bazookas and how many have access to double barreled guns 4kids? One of these is a thing kids might find in their homes, and the other is very unlikely indeed...

I think the most elaborate is still Yu-Gi-Oh with the shadow realm.
Strangely though it seems that when they couldn't censor death they wouldn't do that. When Yugi and Joey have their duel at the peer it's almost entirely unchanged. The threat is made clear that if one loses they will drown and if they go over 40 minutes both will drown. They even kept in the part that Tea will be crushed by a container if Kaiba tries to intervene.
Nobody talks about that but I think it's one of the few times a truly life or death situation was kept entirely unchanged in a 4Kids production. The only thing is that when Kaiba throws his card it bounces off the hand of the rare hunter rather than getting stuck in it but that's a minor detail.
Plus how many of them were pointless. Also, purple bottles could just be filled with grape soda.

Besides the voice acting, I didn't mind Shanks accent but I died inside after hearing Mihawk's for the first time. Obviously they made him French because of his hat.
It's sounds so lame to me, also the voice actor went too extreme with the accent. The way he pronounces certain words makes it sound like he's making fun of Australians. But I can see how people find it funny

I'm very lucky I just finished the Alabasta arc before finding this series, so now I've caught up with everything mentioned and it'll make sense to me C:

"Because our target audience is too young to know how to read and we don't want them to feel as stupid as they are!"
Fun fact 4Kids removed text in all their dubs because a lot of the foreign language dubs were based on the 4Kids version, So instead of editing the text for every version they just removed it instead.
As a kid, I mostly learned English from Video Games and TV Shows.
To be fair, Japanese kids wouldn't be able to read them either since it's in English

When I was a young kid I thought it was the coolest show ever. Then like 6 years later I found the original sub when I was 12 and was amazed by the quality, then horrified when I realised what my childhood version had changed for a western audience.

Apparently, 4kids hadn't watched a single episode before buying the rights to it. They just bought it because it had high ratings in Japan. So they didn't know anything about the actual story or how dark it can get.

This version of the show must die for it is cursed and evil
0:33 It was not. One Piece was NOT the main reason for 4Kids' downfall. Chaotic was. That show nearly caused them to go bankrupt because they put so much money into producing the show from scratch, creating the card game and its online component, and then the economic recession of 2008-09 caused it to blow up in their face right before they broke even and cost them a huge chunk of their cash reserves. They may have lost a bit from One Piece, but they only licensed it. Even the extreme amount of edits costs a lot less than producing a show completely from scratch like Chaotic, especially with its other components.
Probably doesn't help that Chaotix was shit anyway. On the channel I watched it was always smashed between TMNT and Yu-Gi-Oh, and even kid me could figure out it was just crappier, knock-off, with way worse animation and characters than Yu-Gi-Oh

@@DeathknightDragon Despite that, it could have helped 4Kids out of their rut had it not been for the recession. Sales were increasing every quarter, rivaling Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh! And thanks to it, they were so close to the break even point before everything came crashing down.
@@Ninetailedknight It could have taken off if not for the economy. The show was pulling in pretty high ratings and sales were steadily increasing from quarter to quarter. If it hadn't been for the recession, it may have become the next Pokémon or Yu-Gi-Oh!

9:00 maybe the reason 4kids removed English text is because the 4kids version of shows were also in other languages (I remember the 4kids logo at the end of episodes of the dutch localization of Pokémon)

I think it was intended in the same way that one would break a horse, so I don't think it actually meant to imply animal abuse. But I do agree that kids most likely wouldn't know that, and would probably associate it to hurting animals.

I kind of wonder why 4kids even tried with One Piece. It was clearly too much for them.
4Kids bought the series blindly. See there was a package deal that Toei Animation offered them it included "Ultimate Muscle" and "Ojamajo Doremi", 4Kids bought it but failed to research the show's content. When it was discovered that "One Piece" was a tad too violent and sexual for them they asked Toei Animation if they could drop it. Toei wouldn't budge so 4Kids edited the series down to a more child-oriented show. In 2006 4Kids announced it would suspend further production of their dub, due to cost issues and most likely a loss in revenue due to Pokemon expiring.

Needless to say when Funimation attempted to take over the edited dub there was less censoring. Most of the time the episodes were TV-Y7-FV, some were TV-PG and some that had stronger violence were TV-PG-V. The edited dub stopped after Jaya, because Funimation had intended on redubbing from episode 1. However, Australia was demanding the rest of Skypeia so they dubbed it fully uncut and "One Piece" finished its first run on Cartoon Network AUS.
