  • At the invitation of Wolfgang Petrick, whose recently relocated from Williamsburg to Red Hook Brooklyn, James Kalm makes a visit to the studio of Dustin Yellin. Having seen Yellin's intriguing work years ago at the Robert Miller Gallery and in subsequent art fairs, and having gazed through the windows of his spacious studio, discovered during waterfront walks with Kate, it was with great curiosity that your reporter returns to bring viewers a snippet of video documenting the artist's work space, process and future plans. Includes a spontaneous interview and tour with Dustin Yellin.

If Dustin Yellin can pull off the art center project he's working on, it could drastically change the whole Red Hook Brooklyn art scene.

That looks like a really huge huge bunch of materials there. What exactly does he mean by "I'm making"? They are really really fantastic. But I'm beginning to figure out what seems to be lacking for me in the experience of viewing work created by a team of workers, and that is intimacy. This is an issue I've been wrestling with for quite some time. On the one hand a team of assistants, fabricators etc can produce work much grander than an individual ever could. And on the other hand the intimate connection of an individual making a piece within their physical means and to the best of their ability is lost. Some things come off like a bunch of stuff made by a factory while others are beautiful collaborative works like a brand new car. I wouldn't say that it's Dustin Yellin's work just because he's paying the others. Thanks James!

So do we know how he adheres the clippings to the glass or how he adheres the glass panes to one another before he smooths the edges out?

Sun Tzu he actually explains it...i came up with my own techniques in 2008, but never pursue the field..but im back on it in 2019...its just a matter of choosing an artistic style without looking like a copycat...i also came up with faceripper4D that can help with 3D faces ...i invented my own tech when i came up with 3D painting

@calvena1 part of the art, is the art of getting the money when you're working on that scale. I'm not sure what this is about either, beyond the process.
