    It's insane how much fun the old 400ex still are with all these new 450s being able to have 2x the power I still have my 1999 bug eye and even tho my 2021 yfz450r is in the 60s hp range now days I still have as much fun riding the 400 as I do the 450 tbh I sometimes enjoy the 400 more and Jay and Illinois power sports are great I live in Dekalb Illinois and Jay has dialed in all my machines and I've been very pleased with the work

    Dude I LOVE my 2007 400ex. Its absolutely my favorite trail atv yet. for sport bike that is. Ive ridden and owned a TON at this point. I can ride my 400 all day and im NOT tired. I ride my 450 i had and it was BEAT TO DEATH after 2 hours... Same for raptor. its just odd... The raptor is a great bike but it beats the shit out of me for some reason. Its like a workout to ride. 400 is Super easy to ride and it dont wear me out AT ALL...

  • @wyattkohle

    Sounds awesome! I 100% agree with the cam comment. A stage 2 cam would really make that thing go while still being reliable. Also have you ever thought about considering beadlocks? If so what brands do you like? I run goldspeed beadlocks and think they're sweet!
    Edit: I see you are trying to stick with an oem vibe. But even for the raptor or yfz?

    • @PeteHager
      @PeteHager  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks man! I meant OEM vibe for graphics if we do a custom kit. I picked up a set of GPS rear beadlocks for our Obor MX tires and they’re super nice. I would like to outfit more of our quads with them since they come with the dual Honda/Yamaha bolt pattern. I’m not sure what the next batch of modifications will be. Maybe refresh the rear carrier and put a new wider adjustable axle in. Then look into upgrading the front end. The front plastic has a few broken tabs on it so I may get a new set of front fenders as well. I rode it in the new top quad series coming out on Mike Sabo’s channel and it was a lot of fun! 😁

  • @Itsjake908
    @Itsjake908 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It’s really interesting how the previous owner striped down the quad just to paint the frame but left everything else pretty much stock. Nice to see you doing these tasteful mods & btw I’m A big fan of OEM graphics although you’re probably going to yank them off haha

    • @PeteHager
      @PeteHager  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m the 4th owner and the quad is definitely interesting. I feel like the motor must’ve needed work or why pull it to powder coat the frame? We realized the rear subframe is stock and it’s chromed/polished. We thought it was aftermarket for awhile. It’s just surprising all that was done but built back to OEM essentially.. I actually love the graphics too. It’s why I haven’t put any stickers on it so far 😅 if we do a graphics kit my goal is for low coverage and a very OEM vibe 👌

      I can 2nd that comment . Stage 2 hot cams with a 416 is one of the best routes you
      Can go on a 400ex. No need for a 440 and overheating issues . 416 kit , stage 2 hot cams , trx450r carb, and some head porting. Best combo you can get for a 400ex in my opinion. Had all those things mentioned on my last one minus the ported polished head.
      Would power wheelie 1st-3rd and clutch dump 4-5th no issue. Never been a 4 stroke guy but that 400ex changed my mind. They have a lot of potential.

      If anyone had any idea how hot a 400ex ran in stock form they wouldn’t even think about going 440. I know there is ways to help this in the aftermarket world but none of them will stop it from reaching extreme temperatures. The thing that I have found that works best is and this is for a 05-07 is removing the headlight and go with smaller lights mounted up around the handle bars and a ram air hood scoop so air can get to the motor.They will live longer and crisper at the throttle if this is done

    • @kylebeach2316
      @kylebeach2316 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That depends on the type of machine you are currently riding with because a bigger machine will make the 400ex seem lazy in stock form because your use too more power. But if you ride a smaller machine then the 400ex will be more powerful.

    • @PeteHager
      @PeteHager  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 400ex has pretty moderate power output stock. It’s a very balanced machine and it doesn’t necessarily need more power to have a good time. The main moments I wanted more power was in the corners and berms power sliding. Just doing these mods opened it up quite a bit but a 450 is still quite a bit more potent 👌👍

      Unfortunately I’m not exactly sure what was all done to the carburetor. I know they utilized the dynajet jet kit that I bought and went off dynajets recommended settings. He ended up using a 155 main but I’m sure some other adjustments were made. You could always call Illinois Powersports and see if they can give you some advice over the phone since he’s tuned tons of 400ex’s 👍

      @@PeteHager he only changed the main jet and the needle that comes with the kit? or he messed with the pilot jet?
      with the instructions i would gess the DJ170 was the right one to put.
      STAGE TWO INSTRUCTIONS (DYNOJET KIT)
      1. Remove the airbox lid.
      2. Remove top carb plate.
      Remove the slide lift arm screw and the two needle plate screws.
      Flip the linkage forward and remove the slide (Fig. A).
      3. Install Dynojet needle on groove #3 for applications below 5000 feet, groove #2 for above 5000 feet, using all stock spacers.
      Install the Dynojet washer above the E-clip.
      4. Remove stock main jet. Replace with the Dynojet Main Jet Adapter (DJA001).
      Screw the Dynojet main jet provided into the Main Jet Adapter.
      If you are running the stock exhaust use the DJ165 below 3000 feet, DJ160 from 3000 to 6000 feet and DJ155 above 6000 feet.
      If you are running an aftermarket exhaust, use the DJ170 below 3000 feet, DJ165 from 3000 to 6000 feet and DJ160 above 6000 feet.
      Be sure that the jet you are changing is the main jet.
      5. Locate the Fuel Mixture Screw (Fig.B).
      For 2005 to 2008 models use the tool provided (DT008) to adjust the mixture screw.
      For 1999-2004 models, use a flat blade screwdriver.
      Turn the mixture screw clockwise until it seats, then turn out 3.5 turns below 5000 feet or 3 above 5000 feet.

      They have the Raptor bend which would be OEM bar height. I would assume the "high" bend would be a tad lower then the Raptor bend. I would assume "mid" bend is probably half the hight of the Raptor bend. Hopefully this gives you an idea what to expect. If you buy fat bars you're gonna need a 1 1/8 fat bar clamp that mounts to your oem stem. @@shawncordeiroTerraceBC because the amount of work and testing we did already took 3+ hours and we were in the middle of a 12 hour drive when we stopped at his shop. If we had all the time in the world we could’ve done that but I had no intention of running without the baffle so it wasn’t a priority for us. I’m not making claims that the Rossier puts out the most power, I run their pipes because they have great customer service, sound good, and look good. @@shawncordeiroTerraceBC Apparently your very interested in running stock exhausts without the baffle. Obviously it’s going to make more power than with the baffle in. I personally think stock exhausts sound horrible without the baffle and I would never run one that way. Your more then welcome to go to a dyno tuner and do testing without a baffle and share your results with the internet for all the other riders interested in those numbers 👍
