      Thanks again for the excellent tips. Yesterday, Chris submitted an audition video and pretended to eat an ice cream bar because the sides said ".. sitting on a rocky outcropping eating an ice cream bar. Stanley speaks as he he eats." Should we have actually gotten an ice cream bar?

    I loved the violin analogy because some of my acting students think they can take one or two acting classes and then will magically get offered the standard rich and famous contract from Netflix or other streaming platforms. Getting an agent is another fallacy that many new actors fall into that I'm glad you covered. As an acting coach - I'm constantly saying AMEN to your words of wisdom!

      @@alybadradoumbouya3761 You should audition online for American shows and movies. It's really helpful to have a resume ready and an agent, but you don't have to. I would move to America first, that should probably be the first step. Don't be messy, have everything planned out. You mentioned you're a student, are you over eighteen? If so, moving to America would be the first step. If not, I'd send in online audition tapes. Getting a role won't be easy, so don't be discouraged, Let people in your life know about your dreams. If you get a part, they'll fly you out to the set in the US. Get an acting coach and work for it. Have the right mindset and take baby steps. Lots of love from Wisconsin, USA.

    You are honestly so inspirational. Whenever I feel like quitting and focusing on a boring 9-5 career, I watch your vids because you speak so kindly and offer such good information for us beginner actors. I cannot imagine myself feeling fulfilled not being on stage or in front of the camera. It’s always so exciting becoming someone else to play a character. You saying be patient is exactly what I need to remind myself of. All good things take time, and that pic was literally so perfect for my visual mind. Why make things harder for myself? Thanks for all the quality vids. Can’t wait to see you on set someday!

      Giving yourself an activity can help with this (kind of like an "independent activity" in an acting class). In it's simplest form it's just something to help get you focused before you begin the actual scene but it also helps with the expression within the scene. Even something as simple as putting on a tie or cleaning a table can add life to a scene because if your character is angry that's going to come out in *how* you clean the table. A perfect example: the scene from Raider of the Lost Ark where Indiana Jones first arrives at the bar in Napal and technically you could say that he has a "door' and she has an "activity". He has a problem; she's the only solution to his problem but she's doing something - watch HOW she does what she's doing when she says the line "Well say it again anyway!!!!".

    I really appreciated your discussion about not taking things too fast. True story here. My friend encouraged me to audition for a one act festival and I got a part!! *Buuut*, there really are some differences between acting on stage vs screen, lol. I thought I was going to run off stage screaming because I felt my first rehearsal was so bad, LOL!! I felt pretty discombobulated! However, the thought dawned on me that perhaps I should be making use of the training I’ve been getting from classes and your videos? :-p Anyhow, I am really enjoying this experience and have learned a lot about *patience*! Since you mentioned not 'pretending' to do things on camera I thought I'd share the time I had to do a spit-take while self taping. I found it much harder than originally thought since I had to 1. Avoid hitting the camera with the mouthful of water I'd sipped. 2. Not choke on said mouthful of water 3. Not *laugh* while performing points 1. and 2. And lastly 4. Properly clean up the area after I was done.
    Didn't get the gig but did learn how to do a spit-take.
    Not sure if I should list that on the 'skills' section of my resume though 😉

    Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. When I was still teaching martial arts I would have my students practice the moves slowly at first so they can master the form without getting injured first. Then once you have perfect form you will naturally notice that there's a certain rhythm to it and once you've found the rhythm you can speed that rhythm up. Now I teach a free acting class for disabled veterans (Meisner based) and the same principles still apply.

    I did a self-taped audition for a character that was shooting a gun at a practice range. I don't own any fake guns so I "pretended" to shoot one.
    Most of the comments I received about the performance were positive. They felt that if I used a real gun, it would have taken away from the performance. What are your thoughts?
    I had a "featured extra" role in a Bruce Willis project years ago- "Acts of Violence". I didn't get to meet Bruce but I was in a short clip with co-star Cole Hauser.

    Hey Kurt great video I just have one question how long do you think it should be before a beginner actor gets a agent.

    • @liquidbraino
      @liquidbraino ปีที่แล้ว

      If you haven't even taken an acting class yet then you shouldn't even be asking about how to get an agent or how long it takes. Did you even watch the video? You're already doing exactly what he said NOT to do. You're never going to have an acting career if you can't even pay attention and follow simple directions because following *direction* is exactly what an actor does. That's why actors are called actors and directors are called directors. A directors job is to direct actors and if you can't listen & follow simple directions then you can't act.
      When you're already doing the work; already taking acting classes; already have a decent reel and resume WITHOUT an agent - an agent will come looking for you. They're not interested in representing people who are obsessed with fame but too lazy to do the work. They're not here just to help you get famous they're in it to make money and if you're not already making money then you're useless to any well established agent because they work on commission. They don't get paid until you get paid.

    Can you make a video of breaking down of a script.

    • @liquidbraino
      @liquidbraino 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's more advanced training that's usually covered in any acting class. There's no point in breaking down the first steps of approaching a script if you haven't even done the basic foundational work which leads up TO that. He's always telling people on this channel that your first step as an actor should be to take classes and don't assume that watching this channel is a substitute for taking classes.
      You must first learn to live truthfully under imaginary circumstances and learn to genuinely connect with your scene partner - and that is the work which will support the dialogue but it's not something you can learn by watching videos any more than you can learn how to ride a bike by reading about it.
      BUT... I'll tell you the very first; most basic thing you learn about learning your dialogue (in a Meisner based class anyway). It's to write down YOUR dialogue and ONLY your dialogue. Don't memorize the other actors lines. In your first read you shouldn't even know what the other actor is going to say - but rather let their behavior and words PULL the dialogue from you; without even knowing what that's going to look like before it happens. But like I said - this is more advanced work which you need to work your way up to. You can't start at the finish line - just like Kurt already mentioned in this video. You have to start as a white belt, just like everyone else does then work your way up. Crawl before you walk; walk before you run etc. Right now you're trying to get ahead of yourself which is exactly what he's warning against in this video.

      @@amankadambotaslam7143 Forgot to mention, when you write your dialogue down... remove ALL punctuation and paragraphs. Just write it ALL down and don't anticipate how it's going to come out. Don't memorize a performance, only memorize the words so that your performance comes from "working off" the other actor.
      The quality of your acting comes not from you but from what the other actor does TO you and for that you need to be open, receptive and vulnerable. Let THEIR words penetrate to your heart and allow THAT to color how your own dialogue comes out; without thinking about it and without planning it in advance.
      You should also know your dialogue so well that you don't need to think about it. You shouldn't be focused on "gosh... what's my next line?". You should be placing 100% of your focus on the other actor; you can't really do that if you don't know your dialogue or at least the intention of the scene & where it's going.
      There's a great book series by Larry Silverberg called "The Meisner Approach". It's a four book series but he doesn't get into script analysis until the third book in the series so that should give you an idea of how far ahead you're trying to jump. Try not to get ahead of yourself - focus on the basics of acting first and once you've done the work that's going to support the text - then focus on the text and script analysis.
      In the early stages of your training you should be doing repetition exercises plus "doors and activities", not trying to do a scene. And you need to have one or two other people to be able to work with. If you have other friends that are interested in acting, get together with them and just practice doing the most basic repetition exercises. You can find videos online which describe in detail how to do a basic repetition exercise. Elizabeth Mestnick has some great videos on this. It's good to have three people in your group so one acts as the "observer" or audience and they also assist by telling you when to start reps and when to stop. You should be doing no less than 3-5 minutes at a time and set aside two hours to practice. I have literally done repetition exercises for two hours, straight without stopping except to drink water or use the restroom.

    Hey Kurt, I watched some of the most famous actors such as Steve Carell and many other actors that had auditions and they did not use props of any sort. I was taught that props are mainly used in commercial auditions and not for film. So your Insight was quite interesting. I was taught that those can be distractions. Where did you get your resources from?

    • @ActingCareerCenter
      @ActingCareerCenter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Props can definitely be distractions when the actor is making the scene all about the props. Many beginner actors try to show off the prop in the audition when it isn't really necessary. Veteran actors know when and when not to use props and when they do, it is simply to add believability to the scene rather than to take attention away from the actor. For example, in most scenes where characters are eating and/or drinking, the actor doesn't really need to eat or drink in the audition because the scene is not about the food, it's about the conversation that's happening. However, if one character says "Here, have some lemonade" and then your character replies, "Ahhhh, that is some refreshing lemonade!". Well, it would look really dumb if you didn't actually take a drink of something before saying that line.

      Yes. I was going to comment on this, but searched to see if anyone else happened to mention it. I've seen actors pulling a bunch of crap out of a backpack at auditions. That's a distraction. Bringing cups and stuff to an audition is generally not acceptable, but I can see where if the scene is about an actor dribbling water through out the scene....it would be an exception. However, even on a taped audition, if - for example - the actor starts of typing, then swivels around and the typewriter is out for the rest of the scene...do not bring in a typewriter.
      Anyway - Kurt, this is my first time seeing your channel/videos. Stage32 featured your video in an article. I think a video on props diving it could give you more content and be something you could like to from this video. Nice presentation...and congrats on Vendetta!
