  • element14.com/tbhs - Ben goes on a scavenger hunt at Maker Faire to see if he can find parts to create a solar powered phone charger. The challenge is that he must scour the booths to collects everything he'll need to assemble the project at the faire. The only tool he brought along is a portable soldering iron. Watch Ben explore the faire and hack together a hat that will charge his phone.

    Thanks SO much to "The Longhorn Engineer"!!! Within your wooden portable NES project, you posted a picture of inside the Yobo FC console, and it is helping me TONS to design my portable NES while I wait for it to arrive at my house! Thanks!!

    You built this solar charger with that USB powered soldering iron... Couldn't you have just got a USB cable and hooked up the phone to whatever was powering the soldering iron? :)

    Then came a gust of wind and knocked the fragile, loosely taped panels onto the floor, shattering them.

      There was a lot of reminders about the solar cells being fragile, almost like it was a major issue...
      I wonder how many they broke while trying to build the hat...

      @element14presents  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah - if only we could have bought that flexible solar panel! That's the thing with a scavenger hunt - you have to get by with what you find. We broke one panel in the making.

    Too bad most of the tech shops are on the west coast. It seems like it would be a really handy thing to have access to. Nothing out here in the midwest except for Detroit, which is too far from me to be worth commuting.

    nice i i took manufacturing engineering at my college and learned how to run lathes and mills. i went to a friends house and his step son was hitting a golf ball he said he wanted a golf tee but did not have one i made him something that worked as one out of a stick from a tree it blew his mind that you could do that

    Imagine living in a country where solar power is a viable thing, rather than a gimmick sold by electronics toy shops.
    In the UK you can buy solar phone chargers and they never work - or take 18 hours to charge a LiPo battery that then charges your phone to 20%.

    What's the purpose of a USB soldering iron that needs an AC-powered USB charger to work acceptably? Just use an actual AC-powered soldering iron and do it right.

      If you look at the video you can see that the sun was about to set when the charger was complete, it probably couldn't get enough energy from the sun because that's how solar cells works. They need to be in a good angle towards the sun and the sun needs to be bright, when the sun is low it's usually a little bit less bright than usual and it's not high enough for the cells to get in the perfect angle zone.
