- element14.com/tbhs - Ben goes on a scavenger hunt at Maker Faire to see if he can find parts to create a solar powered phone charger. The challenge is that he must scour the booths to collects everything he'll need to assemble the project at the faire. The only tool he brought along is a portable soldering iron. Watch Ben explore the faire and hack together a hat that will charge his phone.

Hey Ben Heck fans! We're releasing this week's episode early on TH-cam. Remember you can connect with Ben and suggest a build at element14.com/tbhs - Have a great weekend!
Yess! early ep!
There will still be an episode this Sunday though right?
Thanks SO much to "The Longhorn Engineer"!!! Within your wooden portable NES project, you posted a picture of inside the Yobo FC console, and it is helping me TONS to design my portable NES while I wait for it to arrive at my house! Thanks!!
Whatever it is.. I just love his builds.
Hats off to u Ben !!!
You built this solar charger with that USB powered soldering iron... Couldn't you have just got a USB cable and hooked up the phone to whatever was powering the soldering iron? :)
obviously he know he could off he done this just to make the hat duh
he wouldn't have been able to walk around
Then came a gust of wind and knocked the fragile, loosely taped panels onto the floor, shattering them.
There was a lot of reminders about the solar cells being fragile, almost like it was a major issue...
I wonder how many they broke while trying to build the hat...
Yeah - if only we could have bought that flexible solar panel! That's the thing with a scavenger hunt - you have to get by with what you find. We broke one panel in the making.
;)
I love this show, looking forward to that tutorial.
Parker is the man! Though knowing him you will owe him more than *one* beer for that.
Compares to your normal fashion statement, its an improvement, lol!
That was a close call with that knife!
I guess, that a diploma hat would fit the cells much better ^^
We need one of those techshops in Atlanta
Bosch makes a Li-Ion USB Glue Gun! This thing is great!
That was brilliant!
So, does the hat provide enough current to run the soldering iron?
Too bad most of the tech shops are on the west coast. It seems like it would be a really handy thing to have access to. Nothing out here in the midwest except for Detroit, which is too far from me to be worth commuting.
That moment when you realize ben has a battery pack with him which he uses to make the hat instead of just charging the phone
nice i i took manufacturing engineering at my college and learned how to run lathes and mills. i went to a friends house and his step son was hitting a golf ball he said he wanted a golf tee but did not have one i made him something that worked as one out of a stick from a tree it blew his mind that you could do that
this channel is so awesome and should have more subs!
No Allison made me sad
How many watts is the best for a soldering iron?
Between 20-60 watts. It depends on what you are soldering
No Leatherman? I thought that was a required item for entry to Maker Faire!
Fun project, but disappointing conclusion. How well did it work, if at all?
would it be possible to mod a mobile smart phone for a mobile gaming device? maybe the razer jungle cat phone case could be of use or something?
whats a multimiter?
Oscilloscope tutorial? AWESOME I can't wait!!! I just got my first oscilloscope a Trio Kentwood CS-1060
I also have a Note II, once you start using it, all other phones seem terribly small by comparison :P
I have a video idea, I see you use LCD screens for your portable builds but you don't really explain what you do to hook it up, I think you should make a video of how to do so
cool build =) very useful
I have paper thin flexible solar cells at home, was going to make a wearable and portable solar charger using 5 of them, only got around to make one of them work as a test and then I abandoned the project because I got busy with other stuff.
One of those Graduation Mortar Board Hats would have been better, even more Dorky :D
We didn't think it could be any more dorky - but we were wrong! :)
Solar power is the best way to go...
Is been out since the 70's right? I'm not sure but I know is been out for very Long time... Just not know why is not in very building & house plus why is it not cheap...
really cool. i wish i lived near that place haha
the most awsome vending machine ever!
Is there any way to contact Ben directly?
You can email us at benheckshow@gmail.com
It might have been very practical to do this on a graduation cap.
you can actually run teh USB soldering iron off of a USB 3.0 port on a PC just fine, USB 3.0 is rated for 1.5a 5v at the port
couldn't you have found an LED to test continuity
Released 2 days after my birthday.
Sometime you should attempt to make a google glass or galaxy gear like wearable computer running windows 8.1 or windows RT!
I which we had maker fair in sweden...
No led to test solar cells.
Meanwhile he disconnects the solar panels and connects the AA batteries to charge his phone ;-)
It is a cyborg's graduation cap.
nice build if i lived close to that place i would be there Always
Imagine living in a country where solar power is a viable thing, rather than a gimmick sold by electronics toy shops.
In the UK you can buy solar phone chargers and they never work - or take 18 hours to charge a LiPo battery that then charges your phone to 20%.
What's the purpose of a USB soldering iron that needs an AC-powered USB charger to work acceptably? Just use an actual AC-powered soldering iron and do it right.
PLC!!! mod a NERF Blaster! :D
We do have a couple NERF guns laying around. Hmmm.
The Ben Heck Show
AWSOME!!!!!
The Ben Heck Show
YES!!! I really want to see that! Maybe make it into some kind of trap? And have it powered by more powerful air pressure!
Ben could you please merge an iPhone 5s and a samsung galaxy s5
Step one: buy Galaxy S5. Step 2: download any iOS 7/8 launcher and lock screen app.
really? 240p?
What are you talking about? prntscr.com/3r30js
TH-cam has to process the video first. When it's first uploaded HD isn't available, yet.
Could someone please tell me why Americans say "Saughter" instead of "Solder"? Is it just an old pronunciation or does it have meaning, or something?
you always miss to proof that it works i guess it didnt? :)
If you look at the video you can see that the sun was about to set when the charger was complete, it probably couldn't get enough energy from the sun because that's how solar cells works. They need to be in a good angle towards the sun and the sun needs to be bright, when the sun is low it's usually a little bit less bright than usual and it's not high enough for the cells to get in the perfect angle zone.
MiniDemonic there are artificial lights around aren't there?
***** Artificial lights are not good enough to charge a phone with..
The underlining music is too loud, so it's hard to hear your voice...
I have the Korean rip off of the note
techshop is such a generic name, how the fuck am i gonna find out more about it? Where can I find videos of that guy you were talking to? He knew his shizzznit right there.
Check it - techshop.ws/
forgive my language...
Omg that acting/scripting.
he is realy talented.
OK, you had to borrow a Leatherman? No Swiss Army knife? Really? Shame Shame Shame
