The high school fire labs are becoming more and more popular, I am a part of Tolles Career and Technical school in Plain City Ohio we certified with FF level l/ll and EMT basic immediately after high school. We also have a few local fire departments that offer internship positions that will help provide jobs to the students that take time to ride along and help throughout their senior year.

I remember going through EMT-B back in 93 and while it wasn't over the top exciting being in class when we got to run practical and vehicle extrications it was all worth the weeks and weeks of classroom. In my class there were only 25 students for our entire county and most of us were under 20, now you just don't see the younger generation to interested and it's a shame because it IS a rewarding career and or volunteer program helping others.

Back in the good old 1970's I approached a reading teacher (Peter Lebetkin, Farmington, CT. HS) who was a Simsbury volunteer, and asked if we could have a class on firefighting. I set it up with the school administrators and myself and another kid (John Trapenier) actually got a credit for firefighting. We were the only kids walking around with portable scanners on our waists. Others laughed at us. Oh well. RIP Mr. Lebetkin, and thank you very much. I was going to end it there, but I want to say this: Firefighters are the most selfless people I have ever met (well, most anyway, haha). In the words of author Dennis Smith, there's an innocence that comes with it. By the way, we just lost Dennis Smith (Jan. 21, 2022); his first book, "Report From Engine Co. 82" is a must read. I ended up meeting him by chance back in 1986 at the offices of Firehouse magazine (which he started), at Irving Place on 16th Street, NYC. What an honor! RIP Dennis.

Sweet Course.. I wish that there was something similar up here in BC. I'm to old for it, but i know a lot of kids that would love to do this. Even if they don't end up going into the Emergency services right away for what ever reasons, alot of the EMS and Fire training can help them down the road. I spent 14 years as a Volunteer in our local Highway Rescue, and I now, if I'm first on scene, i know more of what is needed to tell 911 about the scene to get them rolling faster.

I was in the 1st graduating class for this program back in 1994. The program was offered in 1992 and I was fortunate enough to be able to get in. I did half a day at the tech school and the other half doing regular academic classes. I went to AW Beattie Technical school in Pittsburgh PA. After school everyday I would go to the Allegheny County Fire Academy and continue my training. I was able to start my career as a volunteer firefighter then by the time I was 20yrs old I became a full-time Paid firefighter. These programs are great!

I would've loved this! Just finished high school in December (I'm in New Zealand) and the only was to really connect with my local fire/ambo/police station is through contacting them or through someone who works there etc. I got lucky when they set up a health day at the hospital where I met the ambulance station manager and got to meet up for a info night with her, then a ride along about a month later. BUT I told her later that I changed my mind and paramedicine wasn't a thing for me and chickened out and now I'm too embarrassed to go back lol. SO a programme like this would've been great to slowly introduce myself and others to EMS/emergency services rather than jumping right in which was obviously a difficult thing for me to do haha.

I go to a PA Protective Services program and it is awesome. We have an Engine and a Latter. We are getting and ambulance and a Quint. We have a smoke house and we have a rope tower. It has taught me so much. I went to it for law enforcement and fell in love with rescue fire and EMS. We do mods 1,2,3 and Interior Firefighting (mod 4) High Angle rope Rescue 1 and 2, EMR, EMT, BVR Awareness, Operations, and Technician. Hazmat Awareness and Operations, ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800. BLS Provider CPR and other stuff. We have a Rope Rescue trailer and a hydraulic cart. We get some of the news battery operated tools and we are expanding. Protective Services has help me tremendously and has given me opertunitties and passion. We have the best instructors and it's really awesome. It's produced so many great 1st responders cheifs and former students are now running multi county wide EMS agencies and run 30 some ambulances. I recommend these courses to anyone they will really get you there.

If you could get a program started to where students had the option to explore these particular fields and gain the necessary skills to where if they decide to pursue it as a career choice., they are already ahead of the game coming into the training academy environment not to mention what this would do for retention having active duty personnel rotate through such an academy as part of their career, keeping skills sharp and also passing on that knowledge down the line to a future generation

Apollo Career Center in lima ohio just started a Firefighting / Ems Technologies course. I was in the first jr class to go all the way through. That program was an absolute rollercoaster and i wouldn't have wanted it any other way honestly. I graduated with my Lvl II firefighter and had finished the EMT class just needed to test. Sadly I tested once and failed and that scared me away from testing again all the way until this past two weeks. I Finally passed and all my instructors sent me congrats texts.
Honestly my favorite parts where days we were in school on weekends but never doing boring class work. Always doing live burns on the weekends. We even got to do the propane tree at night, being able to see exactly how large that flame was, was spectacular. I miss going to that class every day honestly. It was so much fun and i loved watching my class mates mess around. Big group of clowns.

You guys should add the s130&s190 classes. Those are pretty easy to do in high school and great ones to get kids out into the fire world where we really need them badly

This is a great thing. The number one thing for 911 operators is listen to your caller. It happens way too often that the dispatcher doesn't understand the seriousness of the call. I've been through it. A lot of times they don't even hear what the caller is saying.

This should be played in every high school coast to coast. Let the students bring the storm to the Education Boards, to push for these type of learning options.

This appears to be an amazing program. One of the worst lies that the government pushed on kids a few decades ago was that you MUST go to college in order to make it. That push has not only created massive student debt for useless degrees but has also created a massive void in people willing and able to do blue collar work. Tech/trade programs are booming and students are finding that they are able to not only make more money than many of their college friends but they are able to get into the work force YEARS earlier. This program looks like it enables these young people to be able to graduate at 18 and have a valid and in demand skill set which is awesome. I recommend young kids these days that unless you are going into a medical or STEM field that they should save their money and time and get into a trade. As a software engineer with a degree in electrical engineering, I have made some good money and had a great career but my love and passion is my volunteer firefighter/EMT work.
