If this style of video she is doing then don’t watch. No one needs the comment. To say no offense IS offensive. It’s rude. Thank you for all the work you put in. I’m learning so much!!
Sorry I missed the live video yesterday. I like these training classes. I think I heard you say black wing pencils but no link . I am so art supply poor. Like the eraser end. Neat! . I’ll try to be watching next Tuesday live. Working on a big project with a business professional & having to pull together a lot of paperwork. So hope we can finish up our scheduled appointment on Friday. I just got all my supplies for the beautiful charcoal drawing. Even bought the large pad of watercolor. Boy am I brave.
Yay! Mixed media sandwich because I went and purchased liquitex and I also caved and got blending stump and 8B and 9xxB pencils for drawing. I AM PUMPED!!

Sorry I’ve missed you Karen - super sick! Spent all day/night in bed. Still drew another ‘’eye’’ (I’m doing eye tutorial now). But I couldn’t do anything else. This lesson is extremely helpful, I remember when I started to pay attention to the proportions - that the face shape would mess me up so much! 🙈And it still does if it has some strange 3/4 - upturn angle, etc. The understanding of face planes (everytime there’s a change in value, there’s a change in a plane - new face plane), anatomy of the face - where are the “bumps”(bones) and “holes” (shallow places) , how the light affects them (first establishing the light source, what if you have more than one light source - that’s when shading becomes “funny”-I don’t remember (age 🙄), but either you’re showing less (I think is less) , or more, shadows overlapping themselves in relation to the amount of light sources. And there is the all time favorite (yes, I’m being sarcastic), PERSPECTIVE -esp, when you deal with 3/4 face, and the stronger 3/4 angle it is, the more perspective will have an affect on the way the features show, esp the eyes, but of course all of features, but eyes can get at some point really tricky. The way that we are dealing with by drawing horizontal and vertical guidelines - those are the shortcuts; drafting a face otherwise takes hours, days, or even a week depending on how precise you want it to be. I think you’ve done a great job to show the way drawing the face in an “easy” way - that doesn’t mean less competent. What I mean is that the reader doesn’t have to have a PhD in anatomy and high engineering (j/k) - and I thank you for it, because some materials I work with takes hours to “decipher’’ , before you even touch the pencil. Another thing that you have mention and it’s so important is practice, practice, practice. I hear a lot from people, “oh, you have a such a great hand,” well, thank you, but hand has nothing to do with it - if you can handle a pen, you can draw, as far as hand is concern. What’s so important and need never-ending practice is eye-hand coordination, the way your brain, through, your eyes, relates information (what you are seeing) to your hand. We see things in 3D, but we need to translate it into 2D on a substrate (unless one does sculpture, etc), so it looks like 3D again - now that is an all time curveball! 😃🙈. And in order to do this you need practice, practice, practice.... . I think those lessons by you live ( I promise to show up!🤞 )are fantastic idea - so people can address the issues that are bothering them. I do mixed media altered books, art journals, junk art journals, paintings, drawings, and what’s not - but sketching - in whatever medium/media is the most important think I can do, so all these other things I am involved in, can profit, and become better. Sketching/studying - never stops. We learn forever. We explore new things all the time. These are our tools - the skills we develop by practicing all the time - and then these tools will help us create most wonderful pieces of art that come from our Soul, Heart, and Imagination. Thank You Karen to take on this awesome task and spread the knowledge and love of drawing, painting, rendering - and teach so all of us can become better, and better. Learning never stops! Your book is fabulous! (All of them!) and so is Fun, Fab, Drawing Club! 🎨💕🙌🙂
Can you explain more of nose shapes, have done the two in book, but need to know how to change it to other nose shapes, also struggled with ear exercise drawing
Sure! It really really really is important to have a reference while drawing or else it's just random, you know? So my recommendation is to go onto Pinterest and look at Nose Drawings and then try to copy what you see there but this coming Tuesday will be nose day so I got you there too!!
Loved the video and I appreciate your instructions as they help break down the steps so it's not so overwhelming. I couldn't catch the name of the pencil you showed towards the end of the video and would like to purchase one as you can never have too many art supplies.
Hi Karen, I've been drawing sitting down with my paper on my table. Do you always stand and draw from an easel ? I think I heard somewhere that it's easier to see proportions when you stand, is that right? My space is so small but I have a table easel I could use
Hi Wendy! I actually almost always draw sitting down at my art table! It is better to see proportions when you’re working from an easel but I’m most comfortable sitting. I usually just use a standing easel when the project I’m working on is too large to film from my normal seated position! There’s no wrong way to do art though so definitely just so what’s most comfortable for you! ❤️
