Ive really enjoyed your tutorials. A lot of them say they are for beginners, but in fact, these are good for experienced artists, who have perhaps taken a break and need a tune up, because things get forgotten and bad habits can creep in.
I binge watched your faces videos today, starting with this one. I suddenly went from child-like portraits to realistic portraits. Incredible. Thank you!
Soooo, turns out, i can draw faces! Who knew! This is the simplest and the best art advice I feel like I've come across! So pumped and can't wait to keep drawing!
I am addicted to watching Scottie's tutorials, through which I am now able to draw things I never dare to try. I paid to take an on-line course which could never measure up to Scottie's tutorials.
TRULY enjoy your approach and style of teaching how to sketch. I've went thru countless YTers pages and find that Scottie is so eloquent and efficient. Thank you for keeping me motivated
I worked through this tutorial with you, and it is a game changer for me. I'm so happy to have you as a teacher. I just signed up for your Patreon membership, and I'm going through all the lessons from the beginning. Thank you!
I did follow two of your videos about drawing face, and the first one I did was made one year ago. I did this one after, which was made 2 years ago and I see you changed the way you teach it. This is easier on the most recent video. On this one, if you mess the global silhouette, it's over.
Thank you for this video. I have wanted to sketch like this absolutely years and you broke it down so clearly! I have been in my sketch book for 12 hours completely hooked! :)
Even though this video seems to be meant for more seasoned artists, it was still quite helpful and it definitely will guide me in the right direction when it comes to loosely sketching portraits. Kudos to you for making this great tutorial! 🙌
Whenever I draw a face, I usually end up with the character's face on the page / sheet with flaring nostrils and big lips. The character usually ends up looking like a caricature version of itself.
I love your style and the fact that you undergo the process in a short time and enjoy it. I've always loved drawing and I've dedicated some time to it during my childhood and adolescence, but honestly I got frustrated that the end result wouldn't always be what I expected Then I stated studying it a little and I realized there was so many things to it and drawing started looking harder to me and I got downhearted about having to draw so many circles and guide lines. At first it was interesting and fun, but later I got frustrated once again Seeing how you draw motivates me to give it a try once again. I have a good sense of proportion and spacing now due to all those boring circles and guidelines and I guess your way of drawing will suit my anxiety. Any intentions of making a course on the future? Props to you man, your work is amazing
Thanks for sharing Danilo! Yes I know what you mean. It takes many many hours to master drawing as a tradition fine art so that's why I have explored these sketching techniques as an alternative. Taking simple principles from the masters and applying them to expressive, free flowing sketching. It's more about the experience of sketching rather than getting everything 'right'. I have plans to create a course next year as I'll have some more time 😊
omg schottie u are super n amazing awesome n I cant find words to appreciate u enough to share yr talents n style u have !! wow wow I really enjoyed watching n not an artist but I will try with guidance given n God bless you n keep u well n safe too!!! by the way I am 72 n yr work is so adorable n wish I could met up to hug u too haaaaa 😇🤗💝🌬
Heya Scottie! You've really inspired me to start sketching and I've done a couple of ones now and while I don't stress to much about my alien claw hands... :) I DO stress about shoes. I cannot seem to get shoes right. They are always in weird angles or directions or top down views or from the sole up when the foot is tilted while sitting, just to name a few weird things we do with our shoes! Could you maybe make an indepth video about how you tackle shoes? Maybe it's too specific but I'm sure I can't be the only one struggling with it :)
Those are really great tips! Nobody wants to see my first 2 attempts to sketch a face though - but the third one looks reasonably good! Thanks a lot! Very helpful - now I will practice some more ...
I’ve been sketching with your method for weeks and I’m SO bad at it. It’s actually funny. My husband keeps trying to guess who I’m drawing. I can sketch the same face 8 times and it looks like a different person each time. Ugh
It amazes me how you can use a pen and make no mistakes...even my pencils get obliterated with all the erasing I do.. I just get nervous using a pen smh
That dot method is a revelation for me. When I go in straight with pen (as I am known to do because I don't like dealing with graphite smudging) I tend to just eyeball it, wing it, and cross my fingers lmao. Sometimes it turns out good, sometimes it doesn't. I try not to be too precious about my ink sketches anyway though, If I really cared about making something that looked pretty I would use pencil underneath!
😊good idea. Yes pencil underneath is great for more realistic or polished works. For these more quick sketches I've tried to add in enough structure while keeping it very loose👍🏼
Hi! hope you're doing great. I just wanna say it would be great to share non-reference sketching. Cuz I found it really hard to do. and you're tutorials are really great by the way!!!
Hey Scottie, another great tutorial! I've been doing this tutorial over and over again for hours and I managed get the ones looking straight ahead pretty good. However those side angled are a real struggle. I'll get those eventually, just need to keep working on them. If I could make a request, would be awesome of you made a tutorial on male, female faces on all angles. Like I mean a 360 angle face tutorial with up and down looking :D Keep the good work up!
Terima kasih.very extraordinary, these instructions and sketching techniques really helped me. thank you for sharing. on this channel I have started learning to draw🙏😊👌
It's a fun thing to do to fill up a sketch book, although my sketches look terrible :P. Nice change of pace from having to draw a riley abstraction head
You make this look so easy. I know it does come with lots of practice, but darn... it's super disappointing to get a really nice sketch and then a bunch of ridiculous looking ones on the same page. That is my struggle. Lol
Hi, Scottie , nice to see this demostration . Again , I find the lips you draw is very simple two lines only , the photo shows a two lips , up and bottom , can you tell me why ? thanks !
think of it as sketching the shadows rather than outlines of each shape. Less is more in this case. The viewers eye can fill in the rest. Outlining the lips/ eyes or nose completely doesn't look very nice in my opinion 😊
@@SketchingScottie thank you 🙏 Scottie. As a beginner, I always think drawing everything I see can accurately reflects the original. Now I realized in some cases , we have to adjust. Thanks again .
i dont really like starting from the outline when im trying to draw accurate proportions and forms tbh starting from the nose and spreading out by measuring proportions is always more correct for me, although i admit its way more slower. what do u think?
You're right, sketching this way is more for quick and loose portraits with simple line work. Each took me only about 5 minutes. If you want more accurate proportions and a more detailed style then you can sketch the way you do or draw some pencil construction first before the final line work 👍🏼
Good question! I usually like to leave little gaps especially in areas where I'm not 100% sure if the line is right. Then I can look back later and see if I need to correct it or leave it as it is.

Fantastic quick sketching.
this is by far the best guides to practice loosely

It's very nice you brought 6 very different reference faces.. also the guide lines are really intuitive and easy!

Great...especially, you included the sketch on the left side (Loomis liked) object, it is very useful for a beginner like me. Thank you.
I really struggle with sketching faces. This video is a huge help. Thank you!

Your teachings are AWESOME
Having the blue and red diagram on the side was very helpful

Look up tutorials on foreshortening.
pemilihan warna yang eksotis , menarik
This is so rough for me to follow as a beginner. I need structure. Maybe this will be useful in the future.
Great video. You’ve got a real talent there. 👍Found the tip on using dots most helpful.
have been looking for this kind of video for a long time. thank you so much!

Four dots ... killer technique. I like.
I at first thought that this video was too simple to help me draw realistically, but oh boy was I wrong thank you this helped a lot 👍

His method is very unreliable and only works if you are already a good artist, try loomis method instead
Wow, nice! Thank you for sharing
Dig your dot technique 👌
Nice alternative to avoid doing sketch lines that can be intruding.
