3 billboards losing had nothing to do with the diversity quota. frances and sam both won their categories lol. it was a tight race this year and the academy just liked shape of water better. it happened so you can keep crying and wait for nothing to change or you can shut up
This entire clip showcase some of the finest acting I have ever seen. Rockwell is a phenomenal actor. Between the way he walks, adds screeches and pitch to his voice, etc. Seriously, you can literally feel the pain and grief that hes feeling.
They will replay this clip at some points during future Academy Awards. It'll remind older folks about the old magic of motion pictures, and it'll inspire younger viewers to look up this movie based on just that one scene. And no one should complain.
I feel violence is never rewarding in cinema. This is a broken man and Sam Rockwell does it so fucking well. This film as re watchable as One Flew over The Cuckoos Nest

When Dixon recovered from his emotional meltdown and the speech started, I thought he'd take the death of Willoughby as a sign of change - putting on sunglasses, sheathing his baton - to become a good man. And then, without warning, this incredibly hard-hitting long take occurs; a displacement of anger. Brilliant scene.

And when he took a beating trying to get evidence, placing his own wellbeing below that of another's closure. He was always angry. But he channeled it without direction and it hurt people who didn't deserve it. I don't think this movie was ever about people refusing to change, more how grief changes them. The ending though to a lot of people it seems morally wrong. It's direction of anger, instead of hurting people aimlessly he aims it at someone who hurts others themselves. And for once in his life using something destrictive in order to help or at least prevent further pain of others.

This scene was the ONLY film to get a reaction out of my mother I think in the twenty years of watching films with her. I watched it with her after seeing it by myself and she openly GASPED and covered her mouth when Rockwell threw Red out the window. Never have I seen her do that out of instinct EVER. It was a testament to how effective the scene was and how PERFECT it is in the context of the story.
It was a powerful scene of how the badge enables a man to lose his sense of purpose and instead he becomes the judge jury and hang man in one emotional outburst of human behavior and instinct

He was so upset hearing about the sheriff's suicide, he immediately went after the dude who rented out the billboards. A natural reaction, even in the real world, and Rockwell pulls off a masterpiece with this portrayal. No contest for best supporting actor.
This scene reminded me of when Mr. Blonde went to get the gasoline can from his car is Reservoir Dogs. You just knew something terrible was about to go down.

Everything about this scene is flawless. The long-take. The timing of the music: "The pastor screams out to to the crowd: there's evil that must be put down" which in Dixon's mind is exactly what he's doing by throwing Red out the window for the town to see, punishment for taking money to put up the billboards that can be misconstrued as being instrumental in Willoughby's suicide. The focus on the gun up the stairs breeding fears that Dixon was going to simply gun Red down in anger, and I believed he was going to do it right until he turned the gun at the last second. "See, Red, I've got issues with white folks, too." Basically just admitting he's a hateful person all-around. Also, the last "what the fuck are you lookin' at?" to the black guy who nonchalantly pulls his coat back to reveal a badge which Dixon doesn't see, and this event immediately leads to Dixon's removal from the force (at the hands of, of course, the black gentleman who turns out to be the new chief). A LOT going on in such a short, fantastic scene.

First time I saw this movie I enjoyed it, but didn't think it was great. But something about it made me want to rewatch...and rewatch again...and again. I think this is the best movie of the 2010's. It's fantastic.

Genius single shot & genius score. Makes you feel like you’re there with him feeling his uncontrollable rage. I remember when I saw the trailer, thinking to myself how funny the scene will be when he hits that girl (assuming it would be full of dark humor like the violent comedic scenes in Psychopaths & Bruge) but damn was I wrong. The way he just busts through the glass, walks upstairs, and starts beating the fuck out of Red is so creepy, but in a good way. The girl screaming gives it that much more of a creepy vibe.
I thought this scene was going to be played for laughs when i saw it in the trailer. I was anticipating it through the whole movie expecting to laugh....boy was i wrong i was so full of emotion and Shock and the One Take/Shot made it so much more Intense, and the song... jesus my heart😂😢😢😢
Then you didn't get the gallows humour. The scene managed to be hilarious, and very dark and sad at the same time. The voice-over saying "help people", the fact that Dixon acts out his frustration and sadness on the guy only doing his job, the stoic way he goes about it, the dialogue. The fact that he's unaware of his new boss just witnessed all of it. There's countless bits of humour in it.
The background soundtrack of this scenes adds to its power. The usual "uh-oh, somethings coming" type of premonition music would have lessened the impact.
I love how he, on the way up the stairs, thinks about killing him by shooting him, but later he regrets and decided to hit him with the back of the gun

Yes it did. But to be fair, The Shape of Water didn't make me cry, think about how harsh life can be, and the other myriad of heavy things Three Billboards accomplished. But to be fair, The Shape of Water was a fuckload more difficult to make. So sure, I guess it was the Best Picture.
This is why I love Martin McDonagh and movies in general. I love tracking shots. I think it makes a character seem powerful and determined. And this scene also shows Dixon's grief. The way he looks and the way he walks, plus the great music. Genius scene.
So many things make this one of the greatest scenes I've ever seen. The music, the shaky camera, the single shot of the act, the way the camera pans down to his gun when he goes up the stairs letting us know that he's completely cracked before he even does anything. And of course the utterly superb acting from Sam Rockwell to bring it all together into such a masterful scene to setup the climax of the movie.
There are few actors in the planet who are convincing in what they do, most literally just act. Rockwell is one of the convincing. Today I found myself remembering the song he did as Wild Bill in the Green Mile, while held up on his deathrow cell and tossing feathers in the air from the pillow he just had teared in to pieces. "Barbeque me and you. Stinky pinky phew-phew-phew". That's Rockwells strenght, he is extremely good at portraying anything which is somehow broken. Either he is constant state of turmoil in reality, or his psyche is more solid than the black granite which is our bedrock.
One continuous shot, follows him across the street upstairs to the office and then downstairs, now that right there is what acting and filmmaking is all about....

I also think that this scene is great but it's around this time in the movie when everything goes bad, the fire scene is ridiculous to think that Dixon wouldn't realise where he was headphones or not and it's even worse to imagine that a scumbag that throws people out windows changes because of one letter

Fun Fact: the woman (Pamela) who Sam Rockwell punches in the office was played by Kerry Condon, who's not only an Academy Award-Nominated Actress from The Banshees of Inisherin but also voiced F.R.I.D.A.Y. in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
That is astounding coordination from the crew! And it deserves recognition because think of it, that was a lot of work, talent and luck to get right just for 2 minutes of footage in *ONE TAKE* First, when Dixon strikes Red in the face, Caleb must’ve had a handful of fake blood and he had to have splashed himself in the face with it in such a rapid motion in order to make it seamless. AND THEN! Once Dixon threw him out the window, the crew had *15 SECONDS* to apply the additional wound makeup to his face and arms, Caleb runs off the mattress and get down into position and the crew clears the area in time for Sam to come down the stairs with the camera behind him. The whole sequence is only 2 minutes long but I wouldn’t be surprised if it took the entire day to do because holy shit that was a faultless performance from everyone, cast AND crew. Fuck I love movies!
Even the way Rockwell crosses the road is a lesson in acting.

The background soundtrack of this scenes adds to its power. The usual "uh-oh, somethings coming" type of premonition music would have lessened the impact.

Yes it did. But to be fair, The Shape of Water didn't make me cry, think about how harsh life can be, and the other myriad of heavy things Three Billboards accomplished.
But to be fair, The Shape of Water was a fuckload more difficult to make. So sure, I guess it was the Best Picture.

This is why I love Martin McDonagh and movies in general. I love tracking shots. I think it makes a character seem powerful and determined. And this scene also shows Dixon's grief. The way he looks and the way he walks, plus the great music. Genius scene.

So many things make this one of the greatest scenes I've ever seen. The music, the shaky camera, the single shot of the act, the way the camera pans down to his gun when he goes up the stairs letting us know that he's completely cracked before he even does anything. And of course the utterly superb acting from Sam Rockwell to bring it all together into such a masterful scene to setup the climax of the movie.

The music in this scene and the mood when he looks outside the window sets this all up.
I've always loved Sam Rockwell, his performance in Moon breaks my heart and he was awesome in this too👍
There are few actors in the planet who are convincing in what they do, most literally just act. Rockwell is one of the convincing. Today I found myself remembering the song he did as Wild Bill in the Green Mile, while held up on his deathrow cell and tossing feathers in the air from the pillow he just had teared in to pieces. "Barbeque me and you. Stinky pinky phew-phew-phew".
That's Rockwells strenght, he is extremely good at portraying anything which is somehow broken. Either he is constant state of turmoil in reality, or his psyche is more solid than the black granite which is our bedrock.

I also think that this scene is great but it's around this time in the movie when everything goes bad, the fire scene is ridiculous to think that Dixon wouldn't realise where he was headphones or not and it's even worse to imagine that a scumbag that throws people out windows changes because of one letter
Rory D'Alton not that unbelievable with the headphones mine are noise canceling and I can't hear a single thing when I have them on but sometimes reading something like what he read in that letter can make it all click words are a powerful thing

Fun Fact: the woman (Pamela) who Sam Rockwell punches in the office was played by Kerry Condon, who's not only an Academy Award-Nominated Actress from The Banshees of Inisherin but also voiced F.R.I.D.A.Y. in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

That is astounding coordination from the crew! And it deserves recognition because think of it, that was a lot of work, talent and luck to get right just for 2 minutes of footage in *ONE TAKE*
First, when Dixon strikes Red in the face, Caleb must’ve had a handful of fake blood and he had to have splashed himself in the face with it in such a rapid motion in order to make it seamless. AND THEN! Once Dixon threw him out the window, the crew had *15 SECONDS* to apply the additional wound makeup to his face and arms, Caleb runs off the mattress and get down into position and the crew clears the area in time for Sam to come down the stairs with the camera behind him.
The whole sequence is only 2 minutes long but I wouldn’t be surprised if it took the entire day to do because holy shit that was a faultless performance from everyone, cast AND crew.
Fuck I love movies!
He totally deserves the Oscar and Golden Globe he got from this movie it was that good.
