    Putting the glass of juice on the table was powerful, but turning the straw towards him absolutely shattered me the first time I saw this scene. It adds a human touch to the powerful symbolism of this scene that makes it feel so real and true.

      Him sitting down and breathing heavily like tat speaks volumes about PTSD as well...Especially since he's now been sorta forced into this situation with the very person who'd did this to him...Man this part made the movie for me.

      just shows that Welby is a very forgiving dude. What Dixon did to him was just downright terrible, but at the same time Dixon really redeemed himself the second half of the movie and Welby pouring the glass of orange juice for him shows that he forgives him and truly thinks that he was sorry and regretted what he did, good stuff

      Despite the fact that Dixon did something so horrid to him, Wilby did something good by him (even though it was small), and got him some orange juice.

      A guy who was nearly killed gives his assailant orange juice. I don't see how it can restore anyone's faith in humanity. Maybe I'm just not Christian enough.

    • @Onigirli
      @Onigirli 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@SCharlesDennicon The idea that the assailant seeing his victim show him mercy helped nudge him along making that character turn he was making towards the better, or even just validating it if he had his mind set anyway? I think that's what they're angling towards. It's a sweet moment even if you're gonna reject how believable it is. But you can't pretend not to get it anymore. I don't like when cynics do that

    • @Digmer
      @Digmer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@SCharlesDennicon cause he saw true remorse on him. he saw a badly burned man, who cried and ask for forgivenes on the harm he did. insane or not, many victims that seek restitution get a great deal of relief knowing that the guilt is eating alive the person who harmed them, knowing that is not just fucking up their own lifes, but theirs as well. and it was red choice to be kind and get that closure on it, instead of holding onto hate.

    One of my favourite scenes. Love how McDonagh fakes you out into thinking this will be some 'darkly ironic' comic scene and turns it into such a beautifully humane moment.

    • @laurocoman
      @laurocoman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      And it stays so in character too. Welby couldn't punch, humilliate, or even insult a guy covered in bandages, even if it's Dixon. It's not in him, he is just too decent to do that. Dixon starts his atonment through this, someone forgives him for no reason other than avoiding to hold a grudge. Forgiveness is one powerful and cleansing gesture.

    • @lopey5035
      @lopey5035 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I also love how McDonagh made you think Dixon burnt down the signs, only to find out he didn't

    • @triciajohansen3027
      @triciajohansen3027 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I broke down during this beautiful scene. Welby could have done some major damage, but he just couldn't beat a man who is down even though what Dixon did was unforgivable. This is when Dixon atoned for his past behavior and sought forgiveness as well as trying to the right thing by the eyes of the law.

  • @ottoroe
    @ottoroe 6 ปีที่แล้ว +545

    This probably is the most unlikely scenes to have made me cry. I simply couldn't contain my tears during this moment, it was so humane, so agonising and so beautiful

    • @laurocoman
      @laurocoman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      I didn't cry, I sit silently looking at the screen, I couldn't move or talk. It was shocking in a very special way. Welby was too kind to mistreat a burnt man, it's not into him, and he couldn't help to feel sorry for him. Welby turned the other cheek in such a genuine way, he also indirectly forgave him, I guess it isn't into him to keep a grudge either. So much decency and fragility in the same couple of scenes.

      It’s all about knowing your plot and where it’s supposed to go. Also about knowing when the comedy needs to end in the seriousness needs to begin. The comedy is covering what we wish we could do in real life. The drama is covering what we need to do in real life. And I think that’s kind of the overall message of the movie. Anger and violence only beats more angry, angry, and violence. That’s why it’s best reserved to fantasy.

    I think main part that made this film so unbelivably good was the writing. It plays you, the characters acts just the opposite you're expecting to do in such an spontaneous way you discover new things of them every single scene. When Welby finds out Dixon's the guy, instead of cursing him or blaming him (wich would have been a HUGE cliché) he says "Shut up or your wound are gonna get worse". He's concern about him! I wasn't expecting that. That brief moment, that sentence that shows mercy, it's what makes the film so special. The characters don't act the way we expect them to act, they're impulsive, irrational and in every sentence they're slowly showing their true colours. They're human.

    Dixon's epiphany moment. He's finding out the path of love is better to live by than hate. Welby just proved to him that love and forgiveness are hard to do but it's must be done to heal the mental injuries. This is a small town. These people see each other multiple times a week and grew up together so deep down they most likely want to see one another succeed.

      Phil Lee it's possible. You're right Phil. That's what I love about art. They're so many different interpretations to it that it could be a combination or culmination of scenes throughout the movie. Dixon saving the Angela Hayes file in the fire was most likely in my opinion a start of his transformation with it apexing in the hospital. Just my two cents. Thanks for your interpretation.

    To me, this is the best scene of any movie all year. Up til this point, you've seen so much damage to property, to spirit, and to the human body. You have an idea of how this scene will go, that it'll be all about Red getting revenge on Dixon. You think he'll hit him or throw the orange juice in his face. But you see the kindness through the pain and the struggle from Red. You see the sincere change in Dixon just through his eyes. It also shows how one act of kindness can change everything for someone. McDonagh really knows how to play with your preconceived notions and throw a curveball at you. I really loved In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths, but this is a masterpiece of a film. It's a shame it didn't win Best Picture, but that doesn't take away just how powerful this scene is. I was shaking in my seat from how intense it was. Hats off to McDonagh, the cast, and the editor. Favorite scene of the year.

      That scene was raw! You can tell Welby could not put up a fight, he was completely out-matched and vulnerable. This scene on the other hand... there so much into it, Welby's kindness is natural, is not into him to mistreat a wounded man and Dixon sure feels humiliated: he beat up a kid to near death for nonsensical reasons and Welby was too decent to act like he would if roles were inverted.

    Right about 2:10, that subtle head turn away was something that only the greats can pull off. Its seems like nothing to most, but it actually pulls on the emotional strings a bit harder with the sad but well timed music

    When Sam Rockwell won the Oscar, he of course made the usual pitch asking viewers to see their film and that the film was all about compassion. As soon as he said, it was all about compassion My mind went to this scene. This poor kid who he had beaten the crap out of and pretty much almost killed him by throwing himout a window. By All rights he should’ve been arrested, but wasn’t. And yet this kid who still recovering from his injuries and has no reason to empathize with him. He is helping him drink orange juice. And it wasn’t until that scene that Sam Rockwell’s character realized how he’d been wasting his life with that my way or the highway BS. I think that’s the first time he started sympathizing with Mildred.

    SPOILER ALERT
    Could you please upload the scene in which Dixon reads the letter at the police station? And when he calls Mildred to tell her that the man was not her daughter's rapist but he knows where he lives?

      The police station scene is very difficult to upload because it's heavily filled with copyright material. I have tried to edit it and everything but as long as the opera song is in there, it's hard. I can upload the other scene though. Thanks for the suggestions!

    In any other movie - this scene would be the one where the "bad guy becomes the good guy" - bout time for Sam Fuckin' Rockwell
    This movie astonished me, just finished 2nd watch - this is after binging on Pulp Fiction and GlenGarry Glenn Ross for a week with my friends and loved ones. 12mil budget, yeeesh......what can you say about Frances McDormand? She's the Sissy Spacek of my generation. Holds a special place in my heart as I spent six years in STL and Columbia and have been to dozens of places like Ebbing.
    I'm the kind of guy who cries watching Rocky no matter how many times I've seen it - but this goes beyond sentimental, what a sensational way to bring about a character arc. And by that I mean not this scene by itself, but the movie as a whole. There are no "good" and "evil" characters (except for the creep rapist)
    That Dixon was a character hiding inside of a rough exterior - I mean who listens to "Chuiquitita" or whatever? how torn up he was about WIllloughby, that he was transformed as a result of Willoughby's inherent sincerity and generosity, etc. etc.

    I think this is a great scene but come on, how do these two people end up in a room together? The hospital obviously knows both their names. Are you telling me no one happened to watch the news and find out the name of the person who beat up Red? How to you put an abusee and their abuser in the same room together? How do you overlook that?

    The behaviour the character uses with Sam reminded me to The republic of Platon, which he says "does an injustice to someone who made you a harm, it becomes the same person that someone is" or even it reminds me to Meditations of Marco Aurelio, where there is a thought which more o less says "the best vengeance against an enemy is to not be the same thing".
