This video revealed so many ballets I didn't know existed or considered to be like hidden gems too. It'd be funny if there was a ballet iceberg from "most known" to "absolute obscure and experimental".
I can’t believe how much I’m learning 😅 I have never seen the Blue Boy variation but I am immediately taken by it!! It definitely cleared my skin and watered my crops 😂😂 #justiceforlaspatineurs #moreloveforlespatineurs
Very fun. Would be nice to see if you do a collab someday with a danseur to see how opinions vary. I'll admit, I didn't immediately know what Franz variation you were talking about. And you guys know how much of a Coppelia fan I am, so I think that says a lot. Should absolutely be talked about more. Btw, I'd love a Flame of Paris commentary
3 times "Napoli!" You really must come to Copenhagen and stand on the scene where it was premiered 29th of March 1842. Remember that the Dansh king Frederik VII married the balerina Luise Rasmussen in 1850, so she had been working under Bournonville. She may even have been cast in the corps in Napoli at the premiere . Our present crown prince is single, so maybe there would be a chance there. to continue this tradition. That would be the theme for a ballet in itself. 😏
@@balletreign Then you will have time to prepare. One of you as queen of Denmark . Smart, elgant, beautifull and with a lot of humor. We do also have precedence: The brother of the king married an asian girl from Hong Kong, so we are used to the Asian charm and determination. If it does not happen, at least we have the layout of the storyline for a ballet with some elements of Cinderella. But dont give up entirely Prince Christan is rather charming, and of course The Royal Theater and The Royal Danish Ballet in walking distance from the palace. There is of course a royal box there, the view from there onto the scene is rather lousy, but the tickets are free. 😄
Vasiliev, Kimin Kim, Sarafanov! ( not in any particular order but, hint, hint, love Vasiliev in Corsair snd Don Quixote. He’s just got that ‘cheekiness’) all in 1 video. What more could we ask girls. Must admit, Never heard of a couple of the 🩰 ballets! Thank you girls. 🙏🙏🩰🩰👍👍👵🇦🇺
Is there any chance you guys would do a le corsaire breakdown like you did for swan lake and Giselle? Ya’ll made the Ali variation so hyped that I went and watched it and now I neeeeed the whole ballet! 😅
Me upon seeing the title of the video: It's gotta be Ali Honestly the whole vid was fun to watch, but THE TWO OF YOU ABSOLUTELY LOSING IT OVER EDEN FORGETTING THE MUSIC WAS THE BEST SECTION FOR ME HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Even if I'm not always acing it, desiré is one of my favorite variations to practice. The version of the manèges I do at the end is so fun and the whole dance is filled with intensity. The chaînés sequence is dizzying though.
I think the 1st Tchaikovsky piece would have been considered passionate by people of that period, not angry. I can see both reactions. I too, at 73, swoon over Ali! And, as far as Kimin Kim is considered, I’m not dead yet! Great video again and I always learn from you!
Really enjoyed this list, and agree with most of it. I don't like Bluebird, and I couldn't tell you why. I think Acteon is great. It's strange you hardly ever see Les Patineurs. It always bugs me when they put those little dancing boys in the way of the Golden Idol solo. I do love Talisman, and all of the Napoli boys. The Auber Grand Pas de Deux always gets me. I've seen one version of the Sylvia Orion solo in his Cave scene that I really liked. I really like all the Flames of Paris music. As for Solor, I think in the Engagement Scene he has been sort of carried away by all the pomp & privilege, and maybe he likes Gamzatti a bit too, since she is so besotted with him. I don't think it's till Nikiya shows up, that he sort of remembers his vows and starts feeling guilty. Typical guy.
Great job, ladies! I really enjoyed your knowledge and delight in all these variations. The ones that I was less familiar with were particularly fascinating. Thanks for all the work you do to give us these videos.
I am going to come after you, girls! How can you put any piece featuring Vadim Muntagirov into the ‘I just don’t like it’ category? The Nutcracker pas de deux in its entirety is blissful, and has induced happy tears from me many times. I may cry now, but for an entirely different reason! 😢😂
LOVE IT!!!! Not the first time i talked about Nutcracker. BUT i really have to because choreographic wise, its one of the few ballet that is very DIFFERENT from cie to cie. YOU really have to watch the Grands Ballet Canadiens de Montreal it is SO different and you would love the "Roi Bonbon" ( Would be very funny to see a Pas de Deux between Roi bonbon and Mother Goose)
Ahh nothing like relaxing to another wonderful Ballet Reign video and learning something new about ballet after working hard all day. So fun and cool to hear about these male ballet variations. Somehow I knew Ali would be at the top haha
Bluebird is one of my favorite male variations. Also watching Kimin Kim as Ali I literally don't think anyone else can do Ali justice. I also will agree with you about the Sugar Plum Cavalier. Yes he does the infamous shoulder sit entrance for the Sugarplum Fairy but I'm just not a huge fan of the variation. Now if we are talking about Pas with both Sugarplums then I'm so here for it.
would be sweet if you included dancers names and/or links to original videos that you are referencing! as someone newer to the ballet world it kinda sucks not knowing who they are/how to find the full clips
great video, great ranking! speaking of bournonville's great male variations, where would you place james act I variation from la sylphide? only asking bc it might be my fav male variation :p the music makes me so happy, the kilt is wonderful and the choreography is just SO rhythmically pleasing and fun!!
Loved all of them! A few things came to mind; memories of English National Ballet's Corsaire, with great swaggering dancing from all the male cast (ok, except for the doddery old Pasha); the Siegfried variation from Act 1 reminded me of Anthony Dowell who had a beautiful line despite his totally correct restrained Englishness. And lastly; while not ballet itself, whenever I hear the Don Q pas de deux I remember the beautiful John Curry skating to this back in (gulp!) 1976 - he lifted figure skating into a whole new art form. I think that was the first time I heard the music. And yes, the Bayadere engagement music just doesn't work (unless Solor was a total selfish narc!)
Thanks for watching and for sharing your thoughts!! The Pasha is always a very interesting character, one of the many eccentric old men in ballet lol 😂😂
I know this is a really weird suggestion, when you talk about these roles can you please say or put the name of Ballet on the screen?? It is so if I see something I like, want to know more about , etc I know which ballet to watch out for.
You two should look into the great character roles for men. My brother, Eric Weichardt, did them all to great reviews with ABT. Don Quixote, Rothbart, Madge, Rothbart and Drosselmeyer!
How did I know Ali would be #1 before I even started? Because it's the best! Personally I'd put Acteon right after it, in the 2nd spot. Both swoon-worthy favorites forever.
HARD AGREE on prince desiree. Like the music is just not right for the vibes of act 3. Maybe in act 2 that variation would have been more fitting. Also for Solor, I've seen productions of La Bayadere where solor actually likes gamzatti alongside Nikiya so that variation could fit that case where he tries to repress his feelings for nikiya with a fake smile.
Any softer and they might as well be Ballerinas lol, personally a Danseur (male ballet dancer) needs to be 70%power and 30% grace @100% technique. Anything less makes them look a bit too soft for me
Joey 100%agree. A clear divide in opinions due to chromosomal differences but it great to hear the reasons given by Jordan and Eden for their decisions.
Good video, thanks! The only caveat I have is that I'd rate the Golden Idol variation a bit higher, but only the Makarova version. I prefer my ballet without the children in blackface like the Bolshoi does it. Sorry, I've been told by Russians it's just an American preference...Here's an old clip of Angel Corella performing it 9his perfect arms!)th-cam.com/video/pLMGgnBttGc/w-d-xo.html
You need to watch the late great Fernando Bujones perform the Paquita male danseur variation. I respectfully disagree with your opinions on that male variation.
Seriously.... no James from La Sylphide... seriously? I'll be happy if I never see someone do the Basilio or the Flames of Paris variations again. Booooring. Apart from Bluebird, all of your "Swoons" are from Soviet choreography (including Talisman which is from the 1950s and the Golden Idol which is from the late 40s). Sorry... I just don't agree with you there. So many of them are mechanical... big jump, double tours, manege, etc. I find male dancers doing complex beats and linking steps much more exciting than 'heroic' big jumps, watch me do my turns in second... blah, blah. Yes... Raymonda and Nutcracker deserve to be at the bottom.

I performed bluebird this year and it was absolutely grueling, after the variation I was so done but then I still had the brise voles😭

Matthew Ball’s Albrecht is fantastic. He dances like his feet are on fire and he’s about to pass out.
I love pretty much anything Matthew Ball does :)
jordan’s older sister energy when eden couldn’t remember the music was so iconic 😭 the emotional torture!!!
Those jumps that land in grand plie make my achilles tendons freak out. Too many intrusive thoughts!!!!!!
So glad you ranked Bluebird and Acteon as swoon!
Both are *exquisite* ✨✨
How about we petition for you guys to do a video on La Fille Mal Gardee? I know nothing about it other than the clog dance.
Oh, that's a fun one! I'd love to see their analysis of it!
