      Yes, exactly what I was thinking. I love watching classical ballet, especially the men’s solos, but so often it is just spin, leap, pose, or leap leap pose, .... If the dancer can’t give us a taste of who the character is, it’s beautiful but a bit hollow. I can understand why Baryshnikov migrated to modern dance and theatre over the years.

    • @alexpond648
      @alexpond648 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yes, that is exactly, what the others are lacking. It's often like watching a sports event with classical music. They're perfect athlets and their technique might be perfect, but Baryshnikov has it all.

      I was taught for a while by
      Valentine Zeglovsy for a while he had been with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and as things happen in life he was on tour in Australia and the War broke out he joined the Australian airforce.
      This guy had danced with
      Pavlova, massine and Nijinsky!
      Every Saturday I would go to Sloane square for class in an old church hall with a leaky roof and centre work was always
      Don Quixote which I can safely say I got pretty good at.
      The secret behind the Russian style is that they have achieved the perfect body lines and the most graceful way to get there and still portray yourself as a virile man.

    This is an extremely difficult routine to perform but these extremely handsome young adult men perform the art of ballet to brilliant perfection with such ease. I have always been fascinated by the elegance of performing male ballet artists who make watching ballet such a delicious treat for the senses. Ballet is the highest form of adult male performance and the absolute perfection makes this such a delight to watch and enjoy the ballet artists especially the male players.

    Барышников, конечно, на первом месте. Вячеслав Лопатин очень техничен: такие сложные прыжки выполняет, зависая, оттточенные движения, баланс держит великолепно, на уровне Барышникова. И Иван Васильев с его парящими, зависающими прыжками. Понравился отточенностью движений, балансом, вращениями Мэттиас Хофманн. И Сарафанов великолепен, видна прекрасная школа и техника.

    • @JonathonLevy
      @JonathonLevy 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's a very old term, yet men were and are never called ballerina, it is ballirino (as both French & Italian have gender inflection pronunciation). The more modern terms for male dancers are: danseur, principal, & danseur noble... besides ballerina is actually a classical rank in a company, yet it has become synonymous with any female classical ballet dancer.

    Christ on drums, do those jumps in La Corsaire have names? And if so, what the hell are they? Not to mention those diagonal twisty things in Flames of Paris.
    Steven McRae is just so damn likable.
    I get the Albrecht Variation music stuck in my head regularly, and I enjoyed one dancer's expressed appreciation of the role actually demanding that he look half-dead from exhaustion during that number for plot purposes.
    Baryshnikov is like oil and the laws of physics, gravity, and thermodynamics are like water.

    • @JeremyNasmith
      @JeremyNasmith 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The double "twisty things" in Flames of Paris are entrelace double, but with an extra half rotation to devant... Almost nobody does this step. Not even that many dancers do a regular entrelace double (which finishes in arabesque). See Baryshnikov in the Giselle, or Don Quixote variation. Actually, Valery Panov did them even earlier than Misha, maybe Misha learned it from him as they were both in the Kirov? I don't think I ever posted a video, but I used to do the same step as Vasiliev back in 2001 in the Coda of Paquita when I was dancing in Japan. If I can find the clip I'll upload it. But of course, Vasiliev's jump is probably literally twice as high as mine...

    I would add seeing Spartacus with old heroes of Bolshoi - Vladimir Vasiliev and M. Liepa - to my wish list.
    However, contemporary Spartacus with contemporary Vasiliev as a main character and Belyakov as Crassus was also stunning to see!🔥🔥🔥

      cetkin I have followed ballet for many years, and this amazing American is the only dancer I have gone out of my way to see live. Luckily for me he is guesting with The Royal Ballet for the 2019/2020 season, so I have seen him in Romeo and Juliet and Manon. Then I flew to Milan for a performance of Giselle. Next is Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake in London, and hopefully New York in May.
      His technique is absolutely superb, but it’s his stage presence that is so wonderful, and reminiscent of Nureyev, Baryshnikov and Ruzimatov

    I loved your list although your corsaire variations were wrong. Corella dances the "ali variation" or "slave variation" and Lopatin dances the "slaver" variation or "lankadem" variation

    For Albrecht variations I would have chosen Nikolai Tsiskaridze, he was amazing in Giselle. I am not sure why you didn't choose any of his, many of these were so much better performed by him. Here Baryshnikov was the best, perfection.

    • @KSfan4ever
      @KSfan4ever ปีที่แล้ว

      I absolutely agree!! For me, no dancer can compare to the physical beauty, emotionality, athleticism, and floating leaps of the great Tsiskaridze. In the current day, Vadim Muntagirov comes close.
