I would like to say that Guillermo del Toro was right when he said "Spider-Verse will fulfill and heal", he was not lying because Across the Spider-Verse's real superpower is its Emotional depth, great humor and its beautiful melancholic tone, I already knew that this one is going to be special, and thanks to Sony for not disappointing us ❤, and so beautiful they'd connected Lego Spider-Man, PlayStation Spider-Man, The Spectacular Spider-Man Animated Series, Among Us Spider-Man, Minecraft Spider-Man, Spider-Bird (Spider-Man from Angry Birds Universe), 1990's Spider-Man Animated Series, The Ultimate Spider-Man Animated Series, Spider-Man Comics, MCU's Spider-Man, Raimi's Spider-Man & The Amazing Spider-Man with an essence of nostalgia 💥

Absolutely. Same goes for the multiverse and crossovers. Lately superhero's industry is exploiting this as the main point of hype, but it's always marketing artificial shit that parasite nostalgia...
This saga actually set multiverse as a narrative context, and explore how the main characters feel and experience it. I love how they did not lose focus on the feelings and growth of Miles & Gwen, instead of wasting time with endless references and jokes of side characters.

As beautiful as the movie is, and as themed as all the distinct art forms of each universe, I kind of wish they found a middle ground or less fragmented sequence to take up most of the screen time. Simply understanding the meaning the writers put into it isn’t enough for me to thoroughly enjoy it. I think theming things well whilst also making them understandable is a third of the battle to persuade audiences, the next two being making something vital and new while also transcending the genre(or genre mash). So I think they accomplished the former two, but I think they’ll attempt at accomplishing transcending the genre in “beyond the spider verse,” whose title kind of hints at the attempt.
But at the same time, even though I didn’t enjoy all of it, I’m glad that it exists as the way it is. Every screen shot of this film is a painting and damn there a masterpiece. There’s always something going on. So I can appreciate it in that sense and not as a well paced story.

One of the thing I love about this movie is that it used the art form to progress and visually tell story. This is shown perfectly through Gwen’s world. It’s use of cool and warm watercolors to convey Gwen’s feeling of loneliness in the world to the dark harsh reds in that heartbreaking scene where Gwen is held at gunpoint by her dad. You could take all the dialogue out and still understand the scene though the art. Animation wasn’t just used as eye candy. They pushed it in a way where it expands and tells the story of each character. It embraces the unique nature of the comic book genere. The art doesn’t distract from the story. It tells the story.

Miles story is so wonderful and relatable, I can relate to not being able to live up to expectations, I can feel lonely yet surrounded by people, I understand struggling to find your own path when you feel like you're the only one who doesn't belong. I can't really relate to losing my made up inter- dimensional kids or having the whole world literally forget who I am. But this movie is something I understand.

"Everyone keeps telling me how my story is supposed to go."
That was the real takeaway for me. I think that not only this is a meta commentary on the fanbases' arguments on the cores of Spider-Man, but I also hope that Miles proves his point and doesn't lose. I won't be surprised if he does, even though he legit lost his uncle and his Peter on the last one. The first movie's message is that *anyone* can wear the mask, and so I think the big theme of this trilogy is just an exploration of that.
"You can't think about saving one world, you have to think about saving one person."
Although unlikely, Miles could also die in the next one, not only as a sacrificial hero for his loved ones, but also to Miguel's logic, prevent any potential damage to the multiverse. I know the logic is weird in terms of how Miles' world isn't already destroyed upon being bit by the spider, but I'm theorizing for the story's sake. But then again, the Spot could easily play around that.

    • @VonJay
      @VonJay ปีที่แล้ว +21

I think the meta commentary is on audiences in general “not wanting to break canon,” and Miguel saying that the father must die as a canonical event that can be expressed or understood across all comic books or adaptions of novels.
And Gwen already broke canon in that by telling her father the truth, it lead to her father quitting before he can be named captain.
So sure, Miles can indeed not be able to save his father and the writers will use Gwen’s example to persuade audiences that breaking canon can be ok as long as it’s done well (because I’m no comic book fan and I can give af about p keeping things the same or not, but I acknowledge that how her father came to that decision was exceptional). But I think it’ll be more convincing overall, and will actually “transcend the genre” if Miles breaks canon as well. And I think the title of the next film, “beyond the spider verse“ hints that he will. I just hope that he breaks canon early and we can explore a whole new world beyond the multiverse for most of the film’s screen time.

If Into the Spiderverse is a love letter to comics that made me wanna read them, Across the Spiderverse is a love letter to art in its entirety that made me wanna go from 100% into my artmaking to 150% and higher. Gwen's universe being moving paintings, the Vulture being straight out of a da Vinci drawing, The Spot having preliminary sketches as if he's been reduced to an unfinished person, friggin LEGO universe, all these different aesthetics are just an example of what you can do with not just animation but art as a while. This entire movie is just art. The art and even story tells us all that you CAN choose your own path and succeed in it. Into the Spiderverse is what made me 100% certain I wanted to pursue animation, and Across made me want to go all in with experimentation. I can only wonder what the third movie will push me to do

So awesome how they introduced a C-teir villain like the Spot and made him a compelling character and one of the main antagonists for Miles and the Spider- people to face off against. Especially with how his origin started out from the first film which is very funny to me. I honestly thought he was just gonna be a one off villain at the start of the film and that was it but he progressively became more of a threat and more interesting as the movie went along with his ability to destroy other dimensions. I’m really excited to see where they take him in the next film.
Also what makes Miles work is that he isn’t a reskinned Peter Parker but his own unique individual with his own back story. Thats how you introduce diversity to a beloved character/franchise without it being forced. Take notes Hollywood and Disney.

Story wins time and time again! Aristotle laid it all out for us in 'Poetics',
    1. Plot
    2. Character
    3. Theme
    4. Dialogue
    5. Melody
    6. Décor
    7. Spectacle
And yet the hyper-commercialization of today and emphasis on selling toys have oftentimes put Story last. Both Spider-Verse movies are masterclasses in storytelling and character development even showing off with balancing a large ensemble of characters. It never loses sight of what it is and doesn't add more than what is needed. For something that seems like such a universe-bending "spectacle" that's really only a front to get audiences in the door to experience the movie of a lifetime. It's so refreshing to walk out of a movie excited, satisfied, and inspired. This past year has been lackluster and going to the cinema has started to feel like a chore. But movies like this are a wake-up call to the industry and audiences that good storytelling will win out, time and time again.

@@isabaig6665 Well yea I’m patient and can wait too, not to mention 2-3 years is the usual time in between movies of a franchise anyways. My real issue, though, is that they promised us March of next year for Beyond to come out. Imo they shouldn’t have gotten us excited if they weren’t gonna follow through just for them to pull the rug out from under us lol. Now we have to wait 2 more whole years because of the situation that came up. And the way I see it, the only way they were gonna be able to pull that off and keep that release date is if they shot/animated both Across and Beyond back to back. So really it was also poor initial planning by the studio.

This movie is a masterpiece. I don't understand why no one is talking about how this is the longest american animated movie ever. 40 minutes more than the average. With a run time that long it was possible to tell a more grand and intricate story, with a completely different structure from the usual. Heck the first 20 minutes of the movie are all dedicated to Gwen and only after her intro we finally see Miles. 20 minutes! It was so fresh to finally see an animated movie don't follow the same old 3 act structure. A movie that doesn't end in a battle with the hero beating the villain. A movie where you don't know where the story is going all the way to the end, with amazing twist you don't see coming. A movie that take more than one hour to present the main focus of the story when all the others would have taken 25 at most. And this is just part one! This is literally uncharted territory for mainstream animation. An animated movie with a story so grand, so long that even 2 hours and 20 minutes are just enough to tell half of it. Let that sink in. And to think that it's the best looking animated movie ever despite it's huge runtime is insane. And part 2 is coming in just 9 months! This means it's close to being finished. How in the world were they able to make almost 2 full movies of that lenght and quality at the same time? I have no words. This movie deserves multiple oscars, it deserves to become the highest grossing animated movie ever. I don't think I will ever be able to enjoy a traditional animated movie the same way ever again after this one.

Whenever I see others complain about the ending feeling off and the pacing feeling weird, I just want to scream that that’s th wooing, it isn’t meant to be typical and if you actually don’t go in wanting a basic 3 act it is such an elevated experience because the movie just takes so Nahum creative risks and liberties that make it soar, as you mentioned never felt more Connected to the world cause of all the time we spend living in it and actually building it, like the miles party scene and the first part of his world was almost like a tv episode in length and I think really let us catch up and get the whole feel for where he is actually at and same for Gwen

Across The Spider-Verse is simply a gem, no doubt about it. It really had great expectations and it did NOT disappoint with its execution. It literally took everything that was so great about its predecessor and elevated it. From Miles Morales’ journey to the development of Gwen Stacy and Peter B. Parker to the morally grey Miguel O’Hara to the incredible action to the visually appealing comic style to the surprisingly threatening villain to the catchy and very effective music and songs to the references of Spider-Man media to show that this film along with its predecessor are straight up love letters to the character of Spider-Man.

Is just.. something that I haven't felt walking out of a movie like this in a while. If im going to be honest, this movie shook me to my core. In more ways than one. However, i'll tell you about the most important one.
Almost 5 Years ago. I sat in the theater, with my best friend. We were, shoot, in 6th grade ? Mayne 7th ? And we sat down, and watched that beautiful Masterpiece of animation and cinema. And we loved it. Not only was this person my friend. This person was my partner. Keep in mind, we were little. So i don't think either of us knew what being a ‘Partner’ meant all to much.
And then. Little did I know. About 5 Years later. Id be sitting in the theater. With that same best friend. And we would still be in love. Still be together. And of course, still be obsessed with Spider-Man.

This movie proves the mind of merit miles has as a character, as a spider man. Peter Parker is defined by his guilt over the people he loses due to his great responsibility. Miles though isn’t Peter. He lost his uncle; but he still has both his parents. He can be the spider man NOT defined by tragedy. The last movie even had a point that his strength comes from being supported by his parents.
Honestly the whole movie felt like one long letter to the writers of modern spider man comics telling them that is okay for spider man to NOT suffer all the time. Heck, my favorite parts of the movie is Peter B being a giddy and goofy dad to Mayday. Stories where spider man can find happiness in spite of his hardship are always going to be my favorite.

This movie is 100% necessary for animation right now. I loved how character focused this movie was, really giving rio and jefferson time to shine, and elevating miles' character to new heights, making him one of the best comic book super heroes put to screen IMO. Let's not forget about gwen because this is as much her story as it is miles' story. The movie began and ended with her in such a beautiful way, and that cliffhanger was just icing on the cake for me. I realized this while talking with a friend, but Miles has a very large, fundamental difference between himself and Peter. And it all comes down to what their uncle said to them at the end. Uncle Ben told Peter that great quote, "with great power comes great responsibility." And that shaped Peter moving forward. The restraint, the convictions, and the resignation to suffer because that's what he needs to do for other people to be happy, all of Peter Parker's most admirable and sometime pitiable traits come down to that quote. He was told that because he was powerful, he had to hold himself to a higher standard, and he did. It's why Peter is Spiderman. But Miles wasn't ever told that. Aaron, at the end, told Miles to "Just keep going." And I feel like that's the defining quote for Miles. He was told to endure and stick to his guns. Not that he had a responsibility because he was powerful, but that shit would happen, he'd suffer, and he'd have to "just keep going." And I think that difference is big enough that where every other Peter, every other Spiderman is, while not content, but willing to accept canon, Miles isn't. Cause accepting a tragedy, accepting his father's death, would be letting someone else, letting himself, letting his Uncle Aaron down. And Uncle Aaron told him to keep going, to keep trying. I don't know if any one else read that much into it, but that's kind of why I interpreted Miles being the way he is in Across the Spiderverse

I like to think that out of an entire multiverse of Spider-Men out to get Miles, that Tom above anyone else would be on Team Free Will. Tom, Tobey, Andrew, specifically.
I think that's my biggest problem with the film, that someone like PETER PARKER any Peter, would be so okay with letting someone suffer just because that's the way things are. Bad things happen, and there's nothing you can do about them. BUT if there IS something you can TRY to do to PREVENT it, then why not at least TRY? I guess they're so used to the trauma, they just accept that's how things are. But I think that's why Hobie INSTANTLY took a liking to Miles; he knew Miles would be the one to break the mold.

Hell even the characters were even better than the first and the first one had great characters. I will also say that those feelings came to me when Captain Stacey was going to literally arrest his daughter. Like in that scene, you can see how conflicted he is. It is so sad but so damn heartwarming when they make up at the end and hug it out, at least to me anyway. I also now love Spiderman 2099 even though before that movie I had literally no idea this guy existed. Now I love him and he is a great antagonist. Also the spot was funny and pathetic and then turned into a legit threat.

Best animated film. Best comic book film. One of the best films in general. It pulls no punches. The film's characters make decisions and they deal with the consequences head on every time. The film never bails them out. And THAT is character development. THAT is what makes this lineup of characters SO compelling. The whole industry can take notes.

Chills. Your narration is amazing and your breakdown of the movie was insanely good. I really loved the movie and I'm glad others enjoyed it as much as I did.
    P.S. (Spoiler warning)
I really hope Miles and Gwen make up and end up together. After the first film I was neutral about it but after atsv I have never been more invested in a comic, no, animated, no, SUPERHERO, relationship ever in my life.

I have felt misunderstood by people all my life. I’ve never wanted to pursue a traditional career path. I’m more of a creative mind and a free spirit and friends and family often don’t get it. They all have gone to college and are on set career paths. They’ve known what they want to do and be for years and I haven’t embraced my dreams enough to pursue what I want to do. But a character like this version of Miles makes me believe it’s okay to be different than people expect me to be. Even the line by Miles’ dad from ITSV about Miles using his spark for whatever he wants is so inspiring. This movie just furthers that concept and deepens it and these movies just resonate with me in a way that not many films do and it’s hard to put into words how I feel about this trilogy and these characters.

  • @SuperNeos2

10:45 It’s not racist, Alex. Miles has been around for over ten years and he’s still referred to as Miles Morales more than he is Spider-Man. When someone says Spider-Man, who comes to mind? Peter Parker. Because Peter Parker IS Spider-Man. Miles is just another legacy character using someone’s name.
He’s only somewhat popular due to these movies and the Insomniac game’s actually trying to do something unique with his character instead of just making him Peter Parker 2.0. You even said it yourself back in your Spider-Man PS4 video that before that game Miles was whatever to you. So are you racist for not liking him the whole time?
You’re so two-faced trying to score virtue points it’s embarrassing.

I think what's so brilliant about Across the Spider-Verse is that it challenges the conventions of what people expect a Spider-Man story should be while still somehow remaining fundamentally true to what a Spider-Man story is, someone who's simply just trying to do the right thing.
I also think of it on a meta narrative as well because for the longest time, I loathed the MCU Spiderman. He wasn't my Spiderman and he didn't represent what I thought Spiderman should be. Homecoming and Far From Home were movies with Spiderman in them but they weren't Spiderman movies, at least not to me. But then No Way Home comes out and suddenly the thing I've been begging for (for MCU Spiderman to feel like he has serious and dire consequences) happens. Tom's Spidey loses Aunt May, and for the first time since his cinematic debut, I finally started to feel that Tom was becoming the Spiderman that I had grown up with.
But, then you get Across the Spider-Verse. A movie that challenges this, that challenges the very notion of the tragedy that makes Spiderman and honestly I can't help but feel called out. I wanted for the longest for Tom's Spiderman to understand the weight of the mantle through tragedy and now Across the Spider-Verse challenges that very idea. Fucking brilliant is honestly all I can say, an amazing movie

It's like a coming-of-age story… it’s like telling Miles if you don’t do this or sacrifice this you are not a “real man” or “man enough” But Mile as every young man should choose to be the kind of man he wants to be and have the support and understanding to give him even more strength to push forward that he already showed by standing against status quo
