First of all, your channel and your videos are awesome but when seeing such video, I wonder how much you are actually doing of the things you are saying. Some people have a deep understanding about life and great insights but yet, they cannot bring themselves to live by it.
It is not a criticism about you and this channel but I am still curious how much the "gap" between your wisdom and your action are.

That's where I disagree. I like the ideas presented, as far as learning to discipline oneself and "turning pro" but I think we have to balance working toward living your dream with caring for / serving others and learning one's place inside of God's creation. To me, balance is the real key to "serenity."
I hope people actually APPLY THIS instead of just acknowledging how great it is and then moving on to a life of distraction by watching content which is irrelevant to their growth or goals. I really believe in the youth, its time for a rebirth of the Renaissance across the globe!

I've basically wasted my 20's. Having infinite possibilities and trying to find myself by means of reduction was a hopeless task, that left me bewildered, at times even mad.
When I turned 30 I began looking inward instead and started understanding who I am, my talents and how I can connect the dots and translate this into lasting happiness - and yes discipline truly is the key.
Of course it's an ongoing project, you can always better yourself, but in the two years since my awakening I've made quantum leaps in all matters of my life and I'm super excited to see where this path takes me.

This is truth. I taught myself how to play the banjo when I was 18. Having learned a few instruments, I was really intrigued with it. Now I am a good player, not the best, but am a good songwriter and make money by doing it (and singing).
I have now written two novels. But the first one was the first mountain that proved I could do it and I should continue to do it. It is the worst book I’ll have ever written being the first one. I love creating and feel a lot of satisfaction from it. Sharing stories with others.

When I finished my 40 page short story and read it over I realized it was awful. Nonetheless, I could see my pitiful skills improve as I looked down the pages. So I came up with

The best advice in this video is in regard to a person’s reason for turning pro. Not for money or recognition, but for the sake of bettering their art. Along with that, without the need for validation from others. Much easier said than done, but if you can take this approach you really are in possession of a rare and true freedom.
This is exactly right and the most important thing. I'm committing to juggling and I want to do it not for love, honor, money, fame or anything, although juggling does bring along significant social rewards too. Each throw is significant, every new trick learned matters.

Indeed that is the core. There are many things a person would do for fame and fortune, and with social media, we see the psychological expression of this in odd forms, like the fools who do stupid acts and pranks for attention. But to feel whole, you must, as the video says, choose the nature of your own imprisonment, and shackle yourself to some skill until you turn pro for the love of it and the satisfaction of getting good, not being good. With time the accolades can come to such people.
Peace of mind is one of those rear jewel that your endeavour will reward you with.

I was in my mid twenties back in the mid nineties and completely lost - lot of personal grief and childhood trauma . Had a calling to a trade and the pursuit to better my craft gave me focus and pride. 25 + years later I'm still improving and it's been a corner stone of my life . Pushing yourself and then having the results show what is possible will make you bloom.
Suffering is just weakness leaving the body. Suffer and toil and you will squeeze out a nectar more sweet than anything that can be bought or stolen.

In my business i have a tremendous potential to grow way beyond where i’m at now, but as you said i find myself sabotaging myself by falling into drinking, smoking, being lazy and bad habits ! I even sometimes catch myself running away and avoiding my responsibilities for dumb pleasures. I’m really stuck in this cycle because i don’t have a clear goal in my life i don’t know what I’m working for anymore, i almost obtained all the material goods i ever needed so i lack a motive now!! I'm so happy I found you, I can't stress it enough. For years I kept thinking, whenever I'd go to my counselling sessions back in the day, that I'll never get better until I resolve the life problems that are causing my depression and anxiety. I've always felt this but your channel is the first place where I've heard an affirmation for that. And also the part about some people being lucky to find their calling early on in life, I've always felt so jealous of them and I have indeed wasted so many years being confused, frustrated, angry, depressed and unable to find meaning in my life, all the while resisting the one chosen for me by others. I've only just recently started forming a semblance of a dream/goal for my life and your content is also contributing to this.

The biggest obstacle is giving up the illusion of having more than one callings. It is to voluntarily choose your own calling and commit to it. This was learned in a hard way, and I think that's the only way it can be learned. But this video puts to words the feelings of conflict between potential and growth.

I want to add on that one of my biggest disappointment is in the way most people practices this idea. Most of the time especially with misguided children/man-children, they tend to discount the time period that most of these philosophies were written in and the social norms in said time period. It’s especially important because entertaining the ideas of virtues, personal development and discipline can easily lead to someone embracing authoritarianism. In fact the only goal of setting healthy boundaries for your self and mind is to discover true liberation and individualism, personal development should never be viewed as a gladiator match. We can more than develop an individualistic society that can still create and maintain a healthy support network for everyone within that society.
See, this doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Why not? Why can you not have more than one calling? What about people like me who get bored easily and lose interest in the tedium of practicing one thing? People who like to do lots of things? Do I have to abandon all the things that give me joy to pursue an interest single-mindedly?
I like drawing. I like playing video games. I like open source software. I like Linux. I like video production and streaming. I like playing with computer hardware. I like animation. I like dissecting film.
Part of discipline is being able to manage your time. And I'm a fan of the saying "A man should be able to build a boat, architect a building, cook a delicious meal, play an instrument... Specialization is for insects." Paraphrased a bit, but you get my point.

me and my boyfriend (both 16 y/o) we have plans to travel and to have a small farm. we have love and future responsibilities/callings/goals. of course we’ll have our dark moments but i feel like we won’t have many and they wont be too serious. not to sound arrogant, but we are both very smart. we think its important to have a ranch to have responsibilities and to help the earth. we think its important to see the world. we’re only 16 but i know we’ll find ways to fulfill these goals. i have a lot of faith in him and he in me.

I think this is a healthy mindset if you don't spiral into a pit of self-loathing out of allowing yourself some time to recharge. many people seem to struggle with the opposite of procrastinating and being lazy. balance between duty and pleasure is the right thing to look for, and everyone needs different amounts of each.

We must finde meaning in suffering. Everyone wants to be on TOP of the mountain, but no one likes climbing it, while this makes up 99% of the work to getting on top, which is why we must also fall in love with the process, the climbing, otherwise we will not endure the process.
Just like you said, endurance, otherwise we will lose interest, because results are not comming in fast enough.
This is superb. Pressfield is a great anchor, as are the I-Ching and Lao-Tzu.
The latter works were around in the 60's and 70's but once we had Ronald Reagan we dove right back into materialism. That slavery is very much around, although there are some enlightened ones among our youth.
A few months ago I decided to do just what this video suggests and for all the same reasons it gives. Its weird to find this video today that so perfectly describes all my thoughts and feelings I had on the topic. It really works by the way, 100% recommended.

I think I m one of those persons. I cant have inner peace just focusing on 1 thing... my mind want to be aware and control everything to not feel threatned, so Im good at finances, history, sport, travel, talk to people, understanding others, cinema, literature, etc..
I would never be satisfied by just commiting everything in one thing, I have to know, I have to understand...
Perhaps that is my pro thing to do..

I've been pondering this for awhile. This was much needed. Thank you.
thank you for this video, it saved my life today. I turn 21 in october, yet i am already withering and giving out (in both mind and body) from a lifetime of mental illness(es)--c-ptsd, bpd & anorexia to name a few. I'm glad I came by this after this morning's session with my therapist. i've been increasingly occupied with suicidal ideation again due to the combination of 'inner' flare-ups and exam anxiety, but this was exactly what i needed to hear to reframe my extreme perfectionism and use it to my advantage.
Wishing every one the best. I'm going to be my own hero now and seize the life I deserve, one which would hopefully make living despite atrocious circumstances somewhat worthwhile.

Utterly fantastic video. It's amazing, as I've begun to learn these things from firsthand experience over the last couple of years... Then you simply put it all into words. It is the pursuit of something meaningful and good for this world, that really brings contentment. Even if it's not the most polished or popular, the feeling you get when YOU create something that you know has real positive value... nothing compares. I believe we are all meant to do this in our own way. That is the height of life, we are all meant to be creators. We all have the power to create something good.
I'm now at a place where I can do this, I've finally started my TH-cam channel. For the first time in my life, I've actually followed through on creating something. I don't mind that views are slow, because the satisfaction, fulfillment, and purpose that I feel simply by doing my part is incredible. Not just incredible... it simply makes sense.
