      To the members of the team, I first want to thank you guys so much for expressing ideas that are usually unknown and undesirable in the consumer heavy societies we live in. I have actually taken one of your videos in the political playlist and transformed it into an extensive essay used to get into graduate school(I got accepted). However, I have one lingering concern about the maybe bias content of your videos. Namely, this channel seems to focus on the psychology of behaviors associated with the many things humans experience, granted that this channel focuses on that. But given the actual content of what you present, I find that a broadened approach to the topics would be fruitful. For example, including eastern ideas about experience and existence, since, as some claim, western ideologies as the source of western problems(in contrast with vestigial biological systems)-----> This would be, in some cases, the antithesis of your videos. Like this video for example, Eastern thought holds that the self that we identify with is not real and is just constructed for social convention. A simple argument(but arguable ) one eastern scholar (Alan watts) made is that improving one's is never possible because the self that you see to be higher or a better version of you (the second self) must already be you in order for you to become it. Its like the principle of non-contradiction or a version of reductionsim. In another way, the version of yourself that needs improving will be improved by the same version of yourself that needs to be improved in the first place. So if one succeed in 'improving', then one was already the version of themselves that they wanted to be necessarily. Though, you could make the argument that changes in behavior are a key aspect of improving, in this case, one isnt improving, one is just changes one's behavior and its neither good nor bad---> Because the maladaptive tendencies and addiction and so on, are natural. They are what the everything is doing. If it were not meant to be, then it would not be. The myth that there is some thing wrong is simply that.
      I know it will be unlikely for a response to this, but leave a like or dislike to notify me that this was read. It would be greatly appreciated

    Using a double self could be productive, but abusing it is dangerous to a degree. Kierkegaard warned of it before:
    “Thus when the ambitious man, whose slogan was "Either Caesar or nothing", does not become Caesar, he is in despair over it. But this signifies something else, namely, that precisely because he did not become Caesar he now cannot bear to be himself. Consequently he is not in despair over the fact that he did not become Caesar, but he is in despair over himself for the fact that he did not become Caesar.”

    • @pazz1038
      @pazz1038 4 ปีที่แล้ว +64

      This journey then is for those who can already not bear to be themselves. But also, as is mentioned, it is not necessary to become an exact replica of those we wish to emulate, just to strive to become more than we are.

      I feel we just have to separate outside goals from internal ones, if you setup a double self to become an Oscar winner it might lead to dissatisfaction, but if you set it up to improve as let's say an actor, I don't see any danger. As long as the results are dictated by yourself and not others.

    I was contemplating last night about how when we are told to "Be yourself. Don't try to be anyone else.", it contradicts what one is attempting to do when on a journey of self discovery and improvement. If one is aiming to become something/someone greater than they currently are, in whatever way, whatever their motivation may be, it's necessary to look to those who have laid the path before you and emulate them in whatever ways are most relevant in order to build better habits, perspectives, processes...ways of being. So what is one to do? I posed the question to a friend and her answer was quite poignant... "Who even knows who the hell they are exactly!?" What a conundrum! This video is well timed.

    • @sasukeCS7
      @sasukeCS7 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I disagree. I think being yourself just means being honest and saying what's on your mind, being confident enough to show your quirks and not second guess yourself on what you say because you are not trying to impress anyone or be like someone else. Self-discovery and improvement done out of self-acceptance, self-awareness, and self-value will always trump any effort to change the core of who you are.

    • @Tfunkallstarjohnson
      @Tfunkallstarjohnson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      For me, "be yourself" means to find and act upon the essence of our original divine soul. To strip away the part of us who is not us but a shadow overlapping our true self, a shadow created by growing up around family and in a society who is constantly telling us who we should be. This happens at both a conscious and unconscious level. The more introspective I am, the more I chip away at what isn't me and find the person I have always been. So for me, my second self is really just my original self. The pure energetic being that came from the cosmos, from the source of all that is.

    • @chriswhatcott7571
      @chriswhatcott7571 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe "be yourself" doesn't mean to be your first self, but to realize (make real) your second self, the self that you genuinely choose to be, and not the default 1st self...

    • @advocate1563
      @advocate1563 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      well we are always in flow so knowing who exactly who we are changes from moment to moment. But in recent years I have found that spending solid amounts with myself and talking to myself as a friend has elicited many answers and great self understanding and to face elements of shadow I might otherwise have avoided. I believe the development of the alter ego is helpful as the place we wish to move to. Since we are dynamic we have to flow in one direction or another. A carefully crafted second self (which might have nothing to do with self agrandissement but.could simply focus on - say - self compassion) is a waymarker. Just a view.

  • @kostaftp

    Neville Godard talks about this in his "Act as if" lessons.
    The more time you can be in your desired Self mode, the more you will internalize these behaviors and will make them natural.
    The subconscious works with images and feelings so this technique is very usefull for change your personality.
    I even have my own mental mastermind round table, when I need to think some business strategy, I sit in my mind with my marketing heroes ( Jay Abraham, Phillip Kotler...etc) and imagine what they would make in these situations.

    YESSSS!!!!!
    7 years ago - I began writing a novel about a travelling carnival. I wrote all the character development and rolls set within the first couple chapters and closed the book: Saying; 'I have to go live the story now'. Alas, through these 7 years - I have met all these people in person! Even living alongside a confused circus - completely 'by chance'. This whole way through - eye wrote a second series about my inner world self and outer observations. Developing mine own character; while living half in a dream and half in a shared reality...

    I was medically retired from the Army after I was blown up and shot. I was an Infantry Squad Leader, and prided myself on my leadership, strength and tenacity. Once retired I had to make a new self because all the parts of me that existed were either dead or not acceptable in a civilized society.
    I went back to school, and ended up with an MBA; however, during that period my biggest adversary was time. When the semesters ended, I’d often find myself with time... Then the self-suppressive escapism I used to deal with my experiences would surface.
    I have a new persona, but sometimes the old “me” does come out. I’m going to carry a coin, and see if I can “flip” myself back and forth. Interesting concept.

    I think the second self, if u have realistic goals to become better but not become someone completly different, is the true self because it represents ur potential if u reduce unnecessary obstacles such as anxiety fear of death etc. The goal of having a second self is to become better not someone else. It is like u are an unpolished gem but the second self polishes u but u don t become another gem it just reveals who you were all long.

I thought at the time that his ritual of putting on his old formal clothes (from the time when he had an important government job) and engaging in conversation with the ancient masters was an activation of the Mind Palace technique whereby he could recall all the classical texts he had studied. That could be a part of it but I see your explanation also has much merit.

    “For since men for the most part follow in the footsteps and imitate the actions of others, and yet are unable to adhere exactly to those paths which others have taken, or attain to the virtues of those whom they would resemble, the wise man should always follow the roads that have been trodden by the great, and imitate those who have most excelled, so that if he cannot reach their perfection, he may at least acquire something of its savour. Acting in this like the skilful archer, who seeing that the object he would hit is distant, and knowing the range of his bow, takes aim much above the destined mark; not designing that his arrow should strike so high, but that flying high it may alight at the point intended.”

    My self is the mother of my idols.
    By earnest effort, discipline and self control, let the wise man build for him self a personality which no flood shall overwhelmed.
    First I tell my self: what kind of person I want to be ? Then I must do what I have to do. I must build up my life action by action and be content if each action achieves its goal as far as possible-and nothing can keep this from happening-not even god.
    God is in us; the author of our dream.
    Our job is to dream big and not worry about what other people think or say or do. The light of intellect is colored by passion and interest. Personality is the element of great happiness. So powerful is the comfort to be derived from a vivid consciousness of this advantage. To win the favor of a beautiful woman by one’s own personality alone is perhaps the greatest satisfaction to one’s vanity than to anything else for it is an assurance that one’s personality is an equivalent to the person that is treasured, desired and de fide above all other.

Later as he grows he finds himself connecting less with personality 2 as he goes trough his young adult and student years and is in a situation where he has to interact with the world more so he can establish himself (studying medicine) but as he gets to his later psychological and mystical works he seems to channel it more and more.

    Second self: Dangerous fine line in between development and creation of a mask such as that seen in narcissism.

    SPOT ON
    I was invisible as a child
    Life modelled in poverty
    No attention given to our needs to survive society
    I never starved, I did stave from lack of hugs left alone in in phycological pain
    Not noticed.
    From the age of 10 depression dampened my pain.

    Beautiful synthesis of Jung, George Kelly, and Cicero. You are indeed becoming a meta-professor. Thank you for your exemplary strivings.
