I liked your review but its Colored Sands lyrics that actually make this album. They're all about Tibet, its people, its history re the Chinese oppression, and both a celebration and indictment of the non-violence of Buddhism. I found a lot of the lyrics to be beautiful and juxtaposed with the brutality and majesty of the music, they create a strange synergy I've never encountered in extreme metal before. Mindblowing stuff.
Not in particular man, the riffs and drums on everything is fire by ulcerate have elements of gorguts but ulcerate maintain/create their own sound on that record. I hear close to nothing reminiscent of Gorguts until Sands came out. Vermis and Colored Sands are two very different records but they sound the most similar.
Oh yeah, Ulcerate is definitely unique. All I'm saying is Gorguts has been around for longer. They are more pioneers with their dissonant harmonies than Ulcerate.
Mathijs Ignoul I think he meant that Colored Sands sounds a lot like Ulcerate; this is a lot more atmospheric than Obscura or From Wisdom To Hate, the same way Ulcerate is both extremely technical and brutal yet dark & atmospheric.
@@DemonWhisper1 maybe in songs like yield to naught and extinguished light were the "melodic dissonance" reach its peak and remains the obviously luc lumay influence !!
This is probably one of my favorite albums of all time, to be honest. It's beautifully dark and brutal. Forgotten Arrows is probably my favorite song on the whole album, if I had to pick. I hope these guys do another, because this is just masterful composition. Fuckin' great stuff.
Forgotten arrows to me stood out as a top track. That overbearing doom march sound for the last 1/3 of the track is beastly. Lots of death metal bands try to pull that off and sound cheesy like a sound track to Lord of the Rings, while this was pure darkness.
So you felt the need to mention that Colin Marston and Kevin Hufnagel played on the record but there was no mention of John Longstreth stepping behind the kit? Those two may have brought lots of hipster credibility to the band, but at the time neither of them had the death metal underground cred that John had from his time in Origin and Dim Mak.
I know about a lot of genres, not all, of course. I also went to music college and I am a producer/musicologist/journalist and still wouldn't consider myself a music nerd, not even squeezing in my 20 years of experience. Alex Webster from Cannibal Corpse IS a music nerd, he even knows the history behind the different scales.
Happy you ditched the outro song. I used to make a conscious effort to stop your videos before they started due to not wanting to hear it. ( it wasn't bad .. it's just I don't wana hear it a hundred times ) good review Anthony. you did a good job giving me an impression on what the records sounds like, i'll check it out.
I'm really surprised you haven't reviewed anything by Devin Townsend. He has such a signature sound/style but still has a decent pop sensibility to his music. Definitely check out Addicted, Ki, Deconstruction and Ghost to get a sense of his diversity, where he goes from a Dance-y pop rock sound, to acoustic, to metal opera, and then to new age folk music.
Always respected Gorguts ability to weave complex and heavy together into a crazy storm of awesomeness. However, I can only take so much of it, have to listen for a bit and then move on to something else shortly thereafter. A band I think you would like is Colosso, they just released an EP called Thallium, check it out.
I love OG death metal, and Considered Dead is a favorite of mine. Got to meet Luc Lemay at a show in Louisville and he was a super nice guy. Bought colored sands from Luc at the merch table (which was so cool!) even though I wished they had an early release. Going to take a deep dive into this one again.
Shock value? I think that is debatable. From Wisdom To Hate is a great record, but the ideas in Obscura were very advanced at the time and it took the genre almost a decade to catch up. It still sounds ahead of most stuff around today. It was on a totally different level. I agree that the textures and arrangements were more complicated than the actual song structures on 'Obscura' though.
Mitochondrion, Teramobil, Svart Crown, Dodecahedron, Portal, Krallice, Gigan but exactly along the same line isn"t quite possible as the point of those bands is being different
big fan of your reviews and you have made me analyze and enjoy music alot more. not to mention all the new music ive discovered from the reviews. i just had a suggestion, do u think u could add a small clip or clips of the music from the album because i always find myself not watching the end of the review because im too curious to hear the music your describing. i understand if theres copyright issues but if u find a way to i think it might make your reviews a bit better
Anthony...you have missed so many releases. Kayo Dot-Hubardo, Gates-The moths have eaten the core, Ruins of Beverast-Blood Vaults, Svarte Greiner-Black Tie. I can go on for days here, I just feel like you and P4K along with many others are trapped in this singularity of releases. There are so much more releases out there.
Wikipedia has very little on any of Gorguts' stuff, and nothing that he has talked about is really on there. And FWTH certainly sounds more like Obscura than it does to any of their other albums.
Your comments on the drums, while great, failed to mention the drummer! I simply hope you didn't assume that it was a drum machine since you only mentioned there were two new members; the third member that joined Gorguts on this album was the mighty John Longstreth.
@Autistic Dolphin54 I'm not sure but I think he's suggesting the album is better than an 8/10. I personally think its closer to a 9 but that may be my biased opinion because Gorguts is my favourite band.. but Fantano usually gives great metal releases 8/10, just that some reviews (like Tomb Mold) were a bit disappointing.
Nine Inch Nails - Hesitation Marks... don't know why but I feel that you don't like too much Nine Inch Nails, didn't see any review of yours about NIN.
I've got all their albums but FWTH just didn't resonate with me like the rest of them. I'll give it another chance, there's got to be something I'm overlooking.
Yeah ! Obscura was what got me into that band ironically lol. I won't go as far to say I dislike it. I'll give it another spin ad see where that takes me
The album is insanely technical though, have you listened to it? Like Anthony said, sometimes it's even hard to follow along with it, because it just keeps changing and each riff is far from simple. In that regard I would completely agree with "intense technicality". It's not on some Joe Satriani shit, but it's complex stuff. I disagree that music needs to be technically proficient in order to be good. A good crust punk album is simple but powerful, for example. But to each their own.
First half of this albums is great, the title track is the best song on the album. After "Battle of Chamdo" it starts to lose my interest a bit. I agree, I wish they had tried to vary their sound more but it is a good album.
Hey Anthony, you seem to know a lot about music. I'm a huge fan and I'm just curious, what genre would you consider the band Sliversun Pickups to be and do you like their music?
Wondering why you didn't once mention the lyrical themes. I'd say the album was written around these themes and to neglect this fact sort of disqualifies it as a review.
"Objectively" doesn't work in that sentence. If someone affirms that they think it's better than their previous work because it's strange and experimental, then that's purely opinion. In fact, there's very little someone could say about a work of art that wouldn't be subjective. When Anthony or Harry use the word "intense", they mean in mood, not in technicality. Because it is certainly a very intensely emotive album. It doesn't make them pretentious to think so, or love this album due to that.
He would've rated it 10/10 if the album was named White Sands
Or if they weren’t Quebec or if the album wasn’t a concept album based on Tibet but who cares about lyrics anyways /s.
Why? Is he from New Mexico or something?
I never understood why death metal albums have the coolest cover art
CZAR Waddles because the music is fantastic
One thing ive found is I can almost guess what the album will sound like by the art on the cover.

Thanks for the explanation. I was having some troubles grasping the overall lyrical theme of Colored Sands.
I also like that not just the lyrics, but also the track list and order paint that story pretty explicitly.

I was just about to say that.
What song is he talking about at 5:02??? There is no song called "another face" on this album!
It sucks because with how he described it sounds like a badass song.
Think he was talking about Ember's Voice
From wisdom to hate was top notch. Reaaaaaly dig this new album. Btw Ulcerate told that Gorguts wS a influence on them.
Lol, no.
