Absolutely agree with what you said about Obscura. Takes a while to get into, but when it finally breaks through it will be worth it. I don't have a ranking, my favorite depends on my mood. Worship them all.
I admittedly am not familiar with the first two records or From Wisdom to Hate, but Obscura and Colored Sands are two of my all time favorite albums ever. It's impossible for me to rank one over the other. I'm glad you finally came around on Gorguts! Thanks for the video. It was awesome as usual!

I just found this band being suggested in a classical music subreddit and it blew my mind. I would recommend Iannis Xenakis to anyone attracted to the madness of Obscura.
I disliked Obscura for 20 years, but since I've been listening so much ulcerate, ad nauseam, altarage, suffering hour... coloured sands this year, I decided to give it a try again and I don't regret it, it immediately clicked for me, it seems like all those dissonant sound just broaden my taste enough to finally get into obscura.

100% correct ranking in my book. I wouldn't agree more with you! Its actually a very difficult task to rank the albums when it comes to Gorguts. Like Death, this band also unleashed so characteristic albums that each of them might be someone's number 1. I have no argument if one speaks about Considered Dead as his number one, or From Wisdom to Hate. Gorguts is a band like that; very special and distinctive. "Colored Sands" is clearly their masterpiece, at least for now. It embraces the whole aspects of the band during their career; technical death, avantgarde/atonal, and catchy approaches combines with wise lyrics, brutality, and elegance in overall... You cannot easily put a piece like "The Battle of Chamdo" in an album like this without creating alienation for the listeners, but again; we are talking about Gorguts. I can claim that in other Gorguts albums you probably will find missing some of these multiple approaches. First two albums lack their experimental approach while "From Wisdom..." and "Obscura" stays very niche and difficult to get into. So "Colored Sands" is a very good balance in this sense. I really love them all, however. Discography of Gorguts is one of the perfect examples in metal history on how a band can evolve within a gradual progression. At the beginnig of their carrier, they were "one of the" old school death metal bands. But now, they are "the authority" who characterizes post-2000 atonal/avantgarde/dissonant extreme metal scene leading the way for the bands like Deathspell Omega, Ulcerate, Imperial Triumphant and so on.
My favorite constantly changed with these guys I love everything they’ve done. I do agree on From wisdom to hate being my least favorite. If you love obscura check out the side project luc lemay and Steeve hurdle started, the other guitarist on obscura, after gorguts broke up. It’s called Negativa. Shits bonkers and steeves the reason colored sands even exists since he convinced luc to leave negativa to revive gorguts.

From wisdom to hate featured Dan Mongrain, and his riffing is pretty dope. Similar to obscura From wisdom takes a few listens to really pull out the covert gem riffs in it.
Obscura is my favourite death metal album of all time. I know that lot of people struggle to get into that album but I instantly fall in love whit it the first time I heard it, it’s just a concentrate of pure madness, the craziest shit I ever heard
You make a good argument for your ranking. Mine was somewhat similar for similar reasons. 1. Colored Sands 2. The Erosion of Sanity 3. Considered Dead 4. Obscura 5. From Wisdom to Hate The first one is probably the most melodic one and I'm a sucker for melody. The second and third are OSDM which I love. Obscura is technically interesting, but doesn't hold my interest as far as good songwriting goes. It relies too much on technique to carry the song, rather than the natural unfolding of riffs and breakdowns. Similarly, FWtH has the same problem but it's less catchy and brutal than the prior album.

@@captainfantastic3490 I gave obscura and the debut another listen. the vocals on the debut were good for me, but on obscura he got a bit "screamy" (if that makes sense?). there's a difference between the two albums vocally and I don't like how it went on obscura
as someone with some formal musical training, this comment made me laugh. Obscura is a challenging listen for sure, but it's still very musical, and much more melodic than most people realize.
@@matternicusswhen i first listened to obscura it seemed very chaotic and random, but despite that i immediately loved it. With every listen to this album it was starting to make more sense than before, which created an unforgettable experience of reinventing the same album for yourself
@@suicidemachine9938 I had a similar experience. It was by far the most dissonant music I had ever heard at that time, and it took a while for my ears (and brain) to adjust. Obscura fundamentally changed the way I listened to music, and will always be a favorite for that very reason

Considered dead will always have a soft spot for me .got the cassette in 1991 .I like all their stuff though
