    As someone who has worked in professional audio production for many years, I've noticed that people still don't seem to understand the reason triggers are used in professional metal production. Without triggers, you have to use extreme processing (compression, equalization, limiting, gating, etc.) in order to make the kick drum clear enough to hear during high speed double-kick lines. If you're willing to mangle the "natural" sound that much, you might as well resort to triggers. You have to think about what's going on with the kick drum itself. Every time you hit it, the entire head flexes, wobbles, and bends repeatedly and can sometimes take several seconds to fully rest again. If you strike it again before the resonance dissipates, you essentially add to the resonance. If you strike it fast enough repeatedly, you end up with a blurred mess of wobbly-sounding nothing. Individual strikes are audible, of course, but you need to work hard to clean up the sloppy-sounding undertones. It's much easier and more pragmatic from a production standpoint, and even a performance standpoint, to use triggers as a means of clarifying the sound. The sound actually produced by striking a 22" kick drum 700 times per minute is incompatible with the sound required to make a record sound polished. Anyone in professional recording can attest to this.

      Ok. I want to thank you for such a very educational explanation of what I have tried and failed to explain to others about what triggers are actually doing. If you don't mind I am going to take a scrollable screen shot of your explanation and share it with many people that needs to read this very short, yet perfectly explained reason for why triggers are basically a necessity in music of this genre. Kick drums more than any other piece of hardware in particular. Thanks again for your very informative and helpful explanation of the role triggers play in this music. Most peoe hear the word triggers and think, "Cheating". No.! It's as you put so perfectly. When the beaters are hitting the bass drum 700 times in a 60 second time space, the explanation you will now allow me to show ignorant non musicians, the reason triggers are a necessity. Yes. Triggers can allow a cheater to cheat. But, Dave Mcgraw, John Longstrength are by no means cheating. It is their (my craft). We don't want to cheat. It would completely destroy my integrity as a drummer and to those who watch me play. So I will be sharing this comment with many people that would never get on here and even type in the name of this band. Pantera is and always will be the most influential band in my life. John Bonham is right up at the top of my list of most influential drummers. But being completely honest with you. The fist time I heard Pantera I was 15. Vulgar was my introduction to a sound the drummer was making that made me think, I'll never be able to do that.! I was living in a city that had a cable company that did not carry or even offer MTV. So I had never seen the video to any Metallica song, or any other band that could have introduced me to double bass drumming way before I found out that it even existed. Remember now. I was 13 to 15 during 1989 and 1991. So when I heard Pantera, I was sitting in a Food World parking lot with a good friend of mine waiting for his buddy to show up with a 45$ quarter of bud. Yeah. Lots of late 30 somethings and early 40 somethings will remember that price. Anyway. He was playing Vulgar Display of Power. I could not even comprehend what I was hearing being done with Vinnie Paul's feet. (RIP). I do remember thinking he must have his floor tom and bass drum tuned to sound identical.! Ha.! That's when I finally started having the freedom we all remember getting around that age. So I was finally able to watch Head Bangers Ball and Metallica "One" at my friends houses that had MTV since the start. My mom immediately took my to Nuncie's music store and bought me a 600$ set of Gibraltar double bass pedals. Changed my life. I was already 1st chair snare drummer and was well on my way to learning my rudiments and I understood the importance of learning them. And fast forward to today, I am in my very early 40s and still play at these speeds. Thanks to the heel toe and swivel techniques. Hey, I'm not 25 anymore, and never will be again. So learning these techniques are nothing to feel ashamed of. They are not easy to learn anyway. Axis Longboard and direct drive pedals have allowed for single stroke licks to still stay in the 250bpm range, although to play the end of a song like Pacific Grim, I, maybe not a 20 year old, needs to take advantage of double stroke techniques. I highly recommend the heel-toe over any other. Basically the only other technique that can be used to achieve a smooth double stroke that I know of, is the swivle technique. I recommend watching George Kollias play in studio, "Thou rise thou shall be dead." He is one of the best at the swivle technique. Also, KRISM. He looks a little funny because of the distance between his bass drums, but he gets it done. Fastest single stokes I've ever heard and seen would be Aaron Kitcher from. I can't even type the name of the band he is in. It's just too stupid. Possibly the fastest feet on the planet, and he is basically in a troll band with lyrics that would make any man or woman with children SICK.! So stupid. So just look up his name. I can't deny his gift. But I will not listen to anything but the non vocal video of Cunt Crusher. So just watch that. Aaron Kitcher, Cunt Crusher. It is feet on a new level. Without triggers though, half or more of his bass drum licks would not even be audible. God Bless.! Yea I said it. Not to you in particular sir. Just to all.!

      theneedledrop I agree with the part, that the (rather) clean vocals can make you giggle at times. BUT I do think, that they create a certain kind of humour intentionally. And for this they use especially the vocals. The humour was more present on Monolith Of Inhumanity, especially on Forced Gender Reassignement, but it's still present. They might want to make you giggle. Still they certainly reduced the humour and that's sth I slightly miss. Ave Delphinus!

    Love this album, definitely my favorite by C.D. and glad you did a review on this one. I know metal reviews probably aren't as popular as your Hip-Hop reviews but I really appreciate it when you put these out. A band I think you'd find relatively interesting would be Rings of Saturn, which is a deathcore band that's themed around outer space and extra terrestrials. Their guitarist Lucas Mann does an excellent job of creating these sci-fi alien-esque tones with his guitar while also playing some really interesting riffs.

    +theneedledrop i'm definitely on the same page for most of your concerns; though i feel like the things i enjoyed about it, outweighed what i didn't. it seems like while a lot of death metal stays the same (especially grindcore), i've been hearing more and more seasoned bands like cattle who are releasing things that are accessible, without compromising the heaviness in a way that i love; albums like One of Us is the Killer by The Dillinger Escape plan and Autotheism by the faceless. this album totally fits that atheistic for me, and that's what i feel makes this record, among other things. not perfect, but pretty damn good. it's also really nice to see reviews of extreme metal that you feel on the fence about, but still care enough to make a video about it; considering the vast spectrum of music that you generally cover.
    great video, man :)

    The polished production didn't bother me one bit on this album. Mainly because I know how goddamn talented and tight Cattle is Live. I think it does an album like this justice...especially when you're flying at 280+ bpm. Overall great review Anthony! Always get a little humor fix when I watch your reviews as well. "How can you look me in the eye.".... LMAO! Love that track!

    Great review, as with any of your other ones. I actually found that the "mechanized" performance was more apparent on this record than the last one, but they incorporated a whole fuckton of black metal influences so it balances itself out.

    Easily album of the year for me. From front to back its perfect. Monolith Of Inhumanity was one of my favorite albums for awhile and I figured it'd be impossible to improve from that, but with plenty more of Travis's weird melodic scream-singing thing its a masterpiece.
    Also, if you like the more raw, harsher recording/sound for death metal, I think you'll like The Black Dahlia Murder's new album _Abysmal._

  • @chrizznist
    @chrizznist 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I seen them live in Santa Fe on their way to recording this record and have some footage on my channel and they were totally on point for playing nextdoor to a stripclub. I think that theneedledrop made a lot of great points with Travis' Vocals adding a bit of melodramatic elements that sound ridiculous, although in the videos he isn't earnest about what he is doing he is having a blast. Great Album and good review. \m/

    I liked the review. I possibly woud give a higher rating to the album, which I think it is one of the best of the band's discography and certainly one of the best in the Extreme Metal scene in 2015. The melodic vocals gave a new flavor to the songs, and the album sounds so aggressive!

    I really enjoyed this release. It seemed as though Cattle also had a lot of black metal stylistics which to me illustrated a far amount of depth and ideological grow for deathgrind and in extension Cattle's style. Another album that I have been enjoying, although it is not a recent release is Beyond Creation's The Aura. I would like to hear your thoughts on it.

    I LOVE your metal reviews. However, the one thing I disagree with you on with pretty much every album, is your dislike for clean, precise, and technical sounding production. I am a fan of it and don't think it takes away from the "brutality", or the "human" aspect of the music. Then again, you're the one reviewing the music, so I suppose it doesn't matter haha. Keep up the awesome metal reviews!

    they took the stage and probably took the night with them as the room was speechless after their set. they became my new favorite band that night.

    Cattle Decapitation is one of my absolute favorite death-something bands. Ever since Karma.Bloody.Karma they've been a mainstay for me. Yeah sure they've always sounded a bit mechanical, but I think they filled the gap nicely left by Cryptopsy after None So Vile. Their brand of insane chaos shackled by hopeful melodic guitars and lightweight drums has always worked for me. As far as their "humans are the scum of the earth"-aesthetic goes, I could care less. To Serve Man had a cool album cover. Otherwise *pfffft*
