4 Ways to Add Recipes to PAPRIKA APP - Including from Paper!

  • Here's my latest Paprika App demo showing you 4 ways to add recipes to Paprika App database. There are walkthroughs on adding recipes manually, add photo to Paprika app, how to download from the web , import from a friends paprika app database by sharing recipes and how to add those pesky recipes which are still on paper but you'd rather not type out every word - you can scan recipes into paprika and save a lot of time!
    Paprika App is still the best recipe management and meal planning app by far in my opinion. I've a couple more videos coming up soon on how to download those tricky recipes that won't work with one-click and also how to clean up your paprika app database when it has become out of control... or is it just me.
    Keep your questions coming - I'd love to help if you're stuck on anything - it's a no shame environment and there's no such thing as a silly question so ask away :)

    I have finally given up the chore of printing recipes intended for a binder, but mostly not being filed. Then never using the recipes in the binder because they were hard to find.

    Fabulous information, Susan! Thanks for sharing. We met, right here, thanks to our mutual affinity for this app. I keep finding more ways to love it. The scan tweaks will come in handy as I have just purchased a couple of books and was really not liking the drudgery of manual entry. I’m excited to try out your method.
    Lately, I have been enjoying Paprika for keeping a very detailed inventory of freezer meals in the grocery section with good notes on thawing/reheating on the recipe card.
    I hope that you and family are doing well and that we may all experience some sunshine here soon!

      Oh that's brilliant - thank you C. New cookery books are always exciting- I have to try and rein myself from buying them as at one point the house was full of them. Love that idea of adding much more detail on the recipe card re thawing etc and tracking your freezer meals. My memory is awful so I do end up looking things up over and over normally, so I love this tip from you- thank you.
      Things are not so bad here for us right now and more stable than it has been. Hope you are all doing ok too. Yes may all of us get some more light and sunshine in these coming months - it just helps!☀️😎🌼

      Glad it was helpful! Yes it's not easy to import as PDF but once they're in you can export the whole database as web pages that 'you own' and even with their own index page, so it may be worth the pain. I'd suggest using it for a while to make sure you're happy with the app then you'll know if i's worth the effort to get those PDFs in.Good luck.

    I appreciate you taking the time to make this video. I'm currently using another recipe manager for Mac and I'm looking to upgrade. I'm a baker and I rely on using grams instead of US volume measurements. The current software (Shop N Cook) that I use will converts from cups, tablespoons, etc to grams. I see there is a "scale and convert". I was wondering if you could tell me if this software will convert volume to grams. I appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks!

    • @CookingandCalm
      @CookingandCalm  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Judy 😊. From my reading you can't import direct in csv - it would have to be made into a Yaml file I think which is very fiddly. Paprika has a list of apps they can import from on their user guide page. Not an easy answer - could be worth just using the web links if they exist in your excel database and downloading into paprika that way if not too many. A good job for when you're having one of those 'all I can do is mindless tasks' days ( I have many of those ☺️). Good luck and I hope it works out

    • @CookingandCalm
      @CookingandCalm  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bri, if you're on a newish iPhone , once you've taken your screenshot, go to photos and look for the icon of 3 lines with an outline -in bottom right when you tap Screen . Click on that and it should let you copy text and then you can paste that using 'live text' feature into a new recipe card in paprika. Hope that helps. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this!
    A question: I have a couple of big boxes of cooking magazines that I haven't thrown away because I was so busy procrastinating the dauntingly massive amount of work I'd need to do to review, import, re-configure, categorize, and save these analog recipes. With that ScanPro app, what is your experience importing recipes where all or part of the recipe is superimposed on the magazine's photo of the dish itself?
    Can the OCR still recognize the characters if they're white or black over a photo of a souffle or a steak? I'd like to avoid having to manually type those.
    Maybe an idea for the chefs at Paprika for Version 4 would be to incorporate the manual scanner-conversion-import-into-Paprika function so that it can all be done from directly the device's camera or photo library without requiring the separate scanner app. But then that would require that they build OCR into their app, and that probably comes with some added cost.
    Thanks again for such a helpful video!

      Hi Justin, I’m sorry that’s my fault, it keeps dropping off my list. I’m hoping to get to that one soon and there is also some instructions on the Paprika App help website itself. It’s a bit clunky but basically you highlight areas of the text then click to add them under the respective sections.

    I thought I knew all this, but your tip on scanning recipes is brilliant! I have a lot of old recipes that need to get into Paprika.Here's my question: I've developed a set of categories that are nested, such as Cookies, then subset categories for drop, rolled, bar, etc. I'd like to be able to pass along my category system to my daughter so she doesn't have to create dozens of categories. Is there a way for me to export categories? When you export a recipe, do the categories go with it?

    • @CookingandCalm
      @CookingandCalm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad it was helpful Pam. I don't think there's a way to import your tailored categories. You could ask Paprika themselves just in case but I've not seen anything on that. One tip I got from this community was that you can both log on to your paprika on the same log-in and therefore both have the same database. That might not suit you but worth knowing about.
      On the scanning recipes, you might already know but the iPhone latest update included free text scanning. It's on my list to do a quick update video for the channel, but you can see it in the photos app. Just focus over some text and look to the bottom right and you'll see a symbol of a page with lines - this scans the text so you can then paste it into Paprika or somewhere else. A nice addition!

    Thanks for your video. My question is, if I have saved photos on my iPad of recipes and I just want to import the photo into the Paprika app, it disappears if I then delete the photo off photo library and it doesn’t transfer over to the computer when syncing. Is there a workaround please?

    • @CookingandCalm
      @CookingandCalm  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Karen and you are very welcome. I just tried to replicate what you did but the issue didn't happen so let me check I understand what you mean. I did the following:
      - added a new recipe to paprika
      - clicked the 'add photo' and set up the thumbnail
      - I then went back to photo library and deleted the original photo
      - I synced paprika and it has stayed visible and is there on my ipad, iphone and mac
      If it's this, it sounds like there could be a bug or something, so maybe either delete and re-install paprika (your database should just reinstall as long you have logged in and have sync set up with the same log-in details on all devices) or contact Paprika App themselves as they will know so much more me :)
      I hope that helps

      Hi there and thank you so much. Wow you have been using Paprika much longer than me - amazing! That duplicate thing must be frustrating. I'm sorry I don't know how to do this. Have you tried logging a call with their help desk - they might be able to help? Worth a try. Here's a link to a help page where you can submit a request at the bottom: paprikaapp.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/114094152754-How-do-I-import-recipe-files-exported-from-other-apps-

    • @CookingandCalm
      @CookingandCalm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If they can't help you, when i have duplicates (which I often do when I'm absent mindedly downloading recipes!) what I do to get rid of them is to open to 'all recipes' (on my mac) and then sort by the title of the recipe. This makes it easier to spot them as they are grouped together and you can quickly delete. I'll do a quick vid on it this week if I can.

      Hi Judy, I don't find Paprika that good for those searches, though it could be me not getting the search terms right. I put a comma between each food item in the search box and make sure all recipes is selected. The app I've used that does that better for me is Mela - very good search and also has an RSS feature that i love. It is not as good as paprika for meal planning templates or pantry function so it depends what features you want use most. Hope that helps 👍😊

      Yes you can but instagram doesn’t make it easy - here’s how I do it : You CAN get Instagram Recipes into Paprika App. Here's how

    I’m trying to figure out how to import recipes saved in Microsoft word .docx format and PDFs. Do you think that is possible with out copy/pasting? How about batch import by category? I want to like this app but I have years worth of recipes saved in Dropbox. I can’t imagine bringing them over one by one.....
    Thanks in advance for your help!

      Oh that's a tough one - I'm just doing my favourite paper/pdf recipes as I agree it would be a big job scanning one by one.I doubt you could get a consistent enough format to automate to be honest though it could be worth dropping the App Developers a line just in case. If some of your recipes were from the internet i'd be tempted to spend the time searching those out and downloading them as that's such an easy thing to do. Maybe then just scan favourites or see if you can persuade/bribe anyone in the family/friends to help scan them. I hope that helps - it's going to be the same with any recipe manager so I guess it's deciding whether the extra features of an app are worth the effort or stick with your tried and tested. I'm sorry I can't help more . Good luck with it 👍

      @@CookingandCalm Definitely agree that searching online for those recipes is usually the way to go! But you could also copy and paste, similar to using the scanner method.

      Hi Donna, no it will still be there 🎉 (but the link will be expired). You can also export via PDF or as a HTML database from Paprika so it's worth getting used to backing up on some way annually or similar as you never know how long Apps will stay around though.

      Hi Laura, yes it's hard to spot. Make sure you're app is full screen/fully expanded and you will see a tiny PLUS + sign in the very top right corner. to the right of the search bar. Or if you can't see that go to 'File in the main menu' and you'll see an option for 'New Recipe'. I hope that helps 👍

      Hi there, It is usually because the creator hasn't formatted the recipe correctly or the web interface has 1 tab for ingredients and 1 tab for method (with a need to click to unhide). You can usually work around by using paprikas manual add and copy and paste - I hope that helps

    I've been trying to find some documentation about how Paprika handles adding ingredients and manages steps--if it has separate fields for ingredient name versus notes for that particular ingredient, whether you can group ingredients/steps, etc. But I'm still coming up empty. I'd hoped that the section here on adding recipes manually would actually have details, but there are none.

    • @CookingandCalm
      @CookingandCalm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Scott, sorry about that. Do you have an example you could point me at in a recipe and I'm happy to see if I can help. And do ask Paprika themselves too as I'm not part of them , just a fan :)

      @@CookingandCalm I actually bought it but haven't had to do any granular testing.
      I'm a long-time user of MacGourmet Deluxe, but it hasn't gotten any real updates in 7+ years (even tiny bug fixes are years behind). There are limitations to how it lists ingredients (among other deficiencies) that I find frustrating, and these limitations are shared to different degrees among other OS X; the difference is there's no way to demo Paprika.
      In use, there's one handy feature that even MGD has that I can't seem to find in Paprika: the ability to group ingredients (MGD doesn't extend this to the instructions, which I would like). That is, if it's a pie recipe, it will allow you to group the ingredients by Crust and Filling. This is partly a matter of formatting to make things easier to read: a Crust group lists the Crust ingredients under that heading and somewhat indented.
      Otherwise, from what I can see in Paprika you can't list preparation notes separate from the ingredients. This is evident when making a Grocery List: Paprika sometimes understands that "peeled and chopped" is a preparation method and not an ingredient description, but otherwise not. For example, I have a recipe that calls for, "1 tomato peeled and chopped," "1 carrot finely chopped," "2 clove garlic peeled and minced," and "2 green bell peppers seeded and chopped." If you make this into a shopping list it separates the prep method into a Note for carrot, garlic, and green peppers, but not the tomato.
      Because of how it's put together this is less of an issue for Paprika than it is in MGD, but the unneeded text clutters the screen in an iOS-screen shopping list.
      Another item I'd like: the ability to switch a view between weight and volume. I cook by weight whenever possible, but if I need to share the recipe with others I usually need to do so by volume. I don't mean automatic conversion (which can be tricky) but I wish I could enter weight/volume into separate views. "Scale and Convert' doesn't work for this, as it only switches between weight, not volume.
      I could go on and on, but those are examples.

    • @CookingandCalm
      @CookingandCalm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Scott, yes it's really hard moving from one to the other. I wish someone could combine the best features from all of them for us :)
      I think that prep method thing might be to do with the way the original website (if that's where you got it) had formatted their data - there's a rule in google about how to specifically add everything to websites so programmes like paprika and their own search engines can 'read them properly' . It's easy to get it wrong (I know I do!) so that might be a reason.
      For the ingredients being separated by headers for ease of reading eg. Crust' as a header. I know way to do this manually once you've added the main bulk of ingredients. I'll do sa Paprika Q&A video soon and can include this if it's helpful?
      The weight re: volume is super tricky and I'm not sure how to do this myself either. I'm in the Uk so we're usually using weights and I do have problems with the Cup measurements as I use a lot of US based recipes too. These things do keep us busy eh?
      Sorry to not be of more help and I hope you find a good solution in whatever recipe manager you choose as your 'final'

    • @Scott-tq7ko
      @Scott-tq7ko 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CookingandCalm re: prep method. The issue isn't importing from websites, it's that the feature isn't there at all, even for manual tweaking. In the worst-case scenario I could always go back over the recipe and reformat the ingredient information. But there's no separate field for prep notes within Paprika. This is actually a lesser issue in Paprika than in MGD, as the latter has an autofill feature for ingredients--but not having separate prep notes means that:
      garlic
      garlic, chopped
      garlic, minced
      garlic, smashed and peeled
      are all considered different ingredients (contained within the autofill database) where it really should only be one ingredient with different prep methods.
      Headers formatting: do you mean using Bold for (e.g.) "Crust"? What MGD does is to both bold the group heading and indent the ingredients contained within it. Much easier to reference when you're rushing about cooking.
      re: weight and volume. It would be incredibly difficult to do this automatically, but that wasn't what I was hoping for. I've seen a few websites that allow you to click on separate Weight and Volume views, for what I presume were manually entered numbers rather than an on-the-fly conversion, but it makes it easy for viewers who have their own preferences. King Arthur Baking has a great weight:volume reference chart that I use--I have some older volumetric recipes in my repertoire that I'd like to convert, so having a separate view where I could plug in the weights would be great. Having separate views is cleaner and simpler than both measures at the same time (e.g., "3 tablespoons (39g) sugar").

    Hi, how are you? Can I print out recipes from Paprika? I want to make a personal cookbook. I don't want to sell it, but I want to pass on all of my recipes to my family and future kids. I am looking for a way to create my cookbook without websites or apps claiming rights to my recipes. Also, I want to keep my family recipes private. My future kids might open up a restaurant (smiling).

      Hi there, ah yes, love it! Yes you can print individual recipes as PDFs (or actual hard copy) or into an email . It doesn’t have a ‘make a cookbook’ feature but you can also export the lot as HTML so you can open in a web browser but without needing to be connected to the internet (ie it’s only accessible to you). I hope that helps ands look forward to those restaurant reviews!

    I understand you can’t have every device out there. But I have a hard time following you since I only have a iphone.
    Have searched but can’t find the answers to these two questions. And I have no clue if you reply back how to be notified. Brrr
    Question #1. Can I still use and get my recipes if I don’t have a internet connection. Guess they call that off line???? If this is not available I believe that this should be addressed and not cost for this. Since it’s something that should have always been there. Plus with the times as they are we do not know what the further will offer. Sure would at least be able to get to my collection to use them. Have solar powered charger so they can’t take that away from me, lol.
    Question #2. I have done a lot of saving recipes by taking screen shots and saving them in my photos. Sometimes I my have to take 2-3 pictures (screenshots) to get the complete recipe.
    Now that I have paprika app I no long have to do that. But I do have some cherished recipes in photo app. It’s been difficult to use them easily. Would love to post them in Paprika collection.

      Hi Kyle, if the video is say on TH-cam, if the creator has added the ingredients in the description in a standard format, Paprika can download that and the video link into a recipe card. You can then link straight back out to watch the video from the recipe card to remind yourself. It’s a bit fiddly with Instagram video but there is a sort of hack - I’ve got this on my list for a quick video and will try and bump it up the list. I hope I understood the question right and that helps.Good luck 👍
