I think it's one of the best recordings of this piece on TH-cam, nevertheless, he's retarding those notes on his right with the middle ring and pinky fingers too much, Villalobos nor Able Carlevaro (Villalobos uruguaian friend) wouldn't be so proud.
0:09 for some reason, I always experience an intense feeling of delightment whenever I hear this note in mr petrou's interpretation, and i've never felt something even close to it in any way shape or form. I think that's the reason this is my favorite interpretation of this great song
Thanks, Nicholas Petrou. So many excessively rush this piece (i'm fairly certain most reading this will automatically to know which particular section i refer), but by doing so i feel they fail to adequately express the true beauty of this arrangement. This is so well articulated, it is incredibly refreshing to hear. Thanks again (gorgeous tone btw)!
Nicholas, one of my favorite pieces. I have to say that you really make this come alive! This prelude is played by EVERYBODY. However, your expression and detailing bring out the joy and the soaring triumph of the brighter phrases. You also give the darker and sadder passages their appropriate tension and longing. In my humble opinion you have presented here THE definitive study on this prelude. I will have to show this to my son-in-law who is a teacher. Thank you so much for posting such a wonderful example of how a master can make a piece of music a living, breathing epic.
Super performance from Mr Petrou With my 50 years of experience on the guitar this rendition is on top of my list. The subtle energy and fervor comes through with sonority and rhythm, is incredible in bringing out Villa Lobos Prelude #1. A joy to watch and listen!
I am not a guitarist but I think that i can recognise beautiful playing when I hear it.Lovely warm sound, free without being indulgent. So lyrical and so very moving! Well done!
I'm learning this piece for my music exam in high school. I'm playing the guitar for 7 years and time flies. I can't wait to master it and have the feeling of being on a stage again!
Another beautifully relaxed piece. It has a nice tempo to listen to... well paced but unhurried... and you make it look so easy.... which is a real sign of a quality performance....

I'm trying to play this piece and seeing this brilliant interpretation you made, it's just simply inspiring. You're an excelent musician and also you're going to serve me well as an inspiration. THANK YOU!
This was my study piece in guitar class in my senior year of high school. Obviously, I never played it this well, but I’m happy my teacher pushed towards it. It’s such a beautiful piece.
That was beautiful! I really love how you played accurately and at the same time you knew how to fluctuate through the music. I don't like when classical players only care about playing the song perfectly, and play like they were on a perfect metronome. Congrats!
Couldn't have said that better! I think being too pedantic can really ruin the feeling of songs sometimes. This kind of song is perfectly fitting for a bit more loose approach in terms of interpretation and playing this too perfectly really would almost ruin the song. Actually I'm pretty sure this was never even meant to be played in a perfect, consistent way where you would keep the same tempo throughout the song. The way this guy does rubato is beyond unbelievable, it's so magnificent to see someone use rubato in such a masterful manner. The guy must have played for dozens of years to achieve this.
Very nice Maestro. That was brilliantly executed with your own personal touch! I first heard this piece in early 1990s when I was around 21 and learning the classical guitar, although I already played since 9 years old but classical guitar was new to me. I went on to do openings for my college when they had art gallery presentations. I was the background live music guitarist :-) I never got to play this magnificent piece by Villa-Lobos.
Studying this prelude with the help of a teacher, whom I visit for half an hour on a (near) weekly base. In my exploration of the piece at home your fluid and tempered interpretation is a great support, even though the video isn't a tutorial.
Amazing articulation and sound - wau! Easily the best and the most balanced interpretation of the piece on youtube. I think only Norbert Kraft has done it to a similar standard, but ge doesn't do youtube, so it's great to have such a polished performance here. Many thanks for sharing!
I know this comment is old but practicing in burst at your desired tempo is one of the better ways to build speed. Start with one beat or even just a pair of 16th notes and just focus on those until you can play it fast, then move on to the rest of the measure and eventually whole phrases. I had that same problem for a while with the B section until I started doing a lot of burst practice, now I can play it close to his tempo. Hope this helps! :)
Who’ve said that dominating this piece is a matter of 1, 2 or 3 years?, I believe it’s about the hour per day you put on that, an individual with 8 hours day or more can be above a 3 years one with 2 hours day.
Thank you, olger, I checked out Alvaro's version on TH-cam (recorded in 2005), but still prefer one from Nicholas. Even though the major part is supposed to be played slower (like Alvaro plays), personally I like the tempo Nicholas uses in his rendition.
Its difficult to have a discussion about taste, but Nicholas rendition focuses merely on the dramatic details. The pulsating openstrings are the soul of the piece and need to be played as the ruthless passing of time. He needed to keep does open strings pure in tempo, the inner-rhythm need to overwhelm such as nature does. You don't choose the puls, you obey it. its his attempt to controle time that bothers me a little. The melodie gives the freedom to the player to express his/herself in a desperate attempt to fight time and there for his or her own mortality. But it is subjectief so I can only respect your opinion. The version of 1995 was the one I was referring to. open.spotify.com/track/5N9JUpoCunbt5H8nnNAID8
What is it about classical guitar music that is so moving? Is it because it seems almost like a human voice? I could listen forever - and Petrou is beyond wonderful.
One of the best interpretations on TH-cam! It helped me a lot to study this piece. Thank you very much!

Beautiful playing which honours the range of the instrument and the genius of the man who composed for it.❤
It is sooo hard to play this song at this level of mastery. Well done man
Nobody can play the classical guitar better than this - absolute perfection in technique and musicality

My father would play this when I was young, about 30 years ago. Well done, sir...very beautiful.
Bravo Nicholas, you are one of the great guitarists of our time.
This is the best expression that I can find among all the guitar players for this piece.
Beautiful performance!
Ugh I've never heard such a gorgeous guitar. Such a masterpiece in itself, not to mention one of the greatest players on earth in full command

Bravissimo ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
What a gorgeous sound. And fantastic sustain. Combination of a great instrument and great player. Hugely enjoyable, as are all ythe Petrou uploads.

Great interpretation indeed, one of the best.
Magnifique musique de villa lobos. Un moment doux, agréable et apaisant ! ❤
Infinitamente sublime.
Esecuzione magistrale. Volume sonoro invidiabile. Tenuta del tempo senza la minima sbavatura. Ottima la ripresa sulle mani. Davvero ottimo video
Perfect. I used to play it myself, so I know the piece inside-out. This a truly perfect, mature rendition. Bravo!
Affascinante.
Simply the best!
Grettings from Poland
absolutely beautiful
Beautiful and flawless interpretation....Bravo!!

I love this preludium ❤ I didn't listen it many years. Thank you😊
Love this piece, its colorfulness and different paces! Outstanding interpretation!

Huqe yes, I agree! This is something so subtle but at the same time so complex, that it must be hard to really master it!
Brilliant interpretation, perhaps the greatest on this prelude... And gotta say...what a masterpiece this fleta
I have never heard a man playing with so much motion and accuracy at the same time. that was perfect!!! well done.

This is the one version my teacher told me to play, the others just run over ever note...I really do enjoy this, great job!
FANTASTIC!
A masterpiece and a masterclass ... bravo HVL and NP.

Bravo!! I realize that I have a very long way to go to play this piece as perfect as you do.
One of the best interpretations of this piece. A very inspiring guitarist indeed.
Que precisão! Esplêndido!

I'm working on this piece and I love this interpretation! Maybe someday?!!!!
How is he playing this 2nd part so fast 😭 3 years since I learned to play this piece and I still can’t do it as fast

Speed is the result of finger organization, study slowly and increase tempo slowly. Studying for goals, not for daily hours.
@@nickford7429what you said, and also it needn't be that fast.
so good, thank
I think I got addicted to this rendition and the sound. I don't see how it can get any better.
Listen to the recording of Alvaro Pierri, you can find it on spotify. Thats the best version in my opinion.
Thank you, olger, I checked out Alvaro's version on TH-cam (recorded in 2005), but still prefer one from Nicholas. Even though the major part is supposed to be played slower (like Alvaro plays), personally I like the tempo Nicholas uses in his rendition.

No scratches in the "disc"! Perfect!
What is it about classical guitar music that is so moving? Is it because it seems almost like a human voice? I could listen forever - and Petrou is beyond wonderful.
