    This is a very good video. Nice job friend. I would like to see a video discussing the "animation and fight choreography" as you put it. I really enjoy and appreciate the approach to analyzing the different styles in this video, and I think that this sort of outlook is very crucial and needed within the RWBY community right now.

      Thanks. I want to make that video in the future, and I have some barebones plans for it, but I don't necessarily know when I'll do it. I know some basics and I have general ideas on what I'd say for each volume, but I'd feel way more comfortable after researching more into what goes into animation. It's definitely in my future though!

    Now that was an incredible analysis. Folks like you are exactly what the fandom needs more of. What I appreciate the most is the ending material that you could have easily stretched to a 20-25 minute video, and discussed every change bit-by-bit, but you *trusted* your viewers to read for themselves, so many TH-camrs don't do that these days and they expect their viewer to be as dumb as bricks.
    I look forward to seeing what other RWBY projects you have planned.

    • @robinrising_
      @robinrising_  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not only that but I took some images from earlier in the video and moved them there so it'd be even shorter. Ilia's skin changes, Salem's Keep and others got pushed there JUST to make the runtime shorter.
      I'm thankful that you're watching the video at all but I know you'd much rather watch a 16-min one than a 25.

    i think we're moving closer to a standard RWBY look, the V6 look, though i do think there's gonna be updates and improvements in lighting and character models

    • @robinrising_
      @robinrising_  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      To be honest, I'm not sure what they'd do differently with character models (as I said in the video, I don't count 'different'-looking' character models as 'character models that work differently than before.' In that way, V4 was the last actual change. But you're just saying they're updated in that they have new outfits, I take it.
      For lighting, I could see that. I really did like V6's lighting because every scene felt bright and colorful regardless of if it were super gray (like Maria's flashback when she fought Tock.)

  • @maverickmak
    @maverickmak 5 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    This was good! Always nice to have some analysis that isn't just complaining about stuff. haha
    As much as I believe V6 is clearly the best looking volume, I have a bit of a soft spot for V3. It had a nice blend between the more complex/detailed visual elements and the more stylised look that Poser gave the show. Though I heard they were basically at the limits of what the software was capable of at that point.

    • @robinrising_
      @robinrising_  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I recall them saying that the panning shot of everyone standing on the locker-ridden Nevermore (or maybe the shot of them readying their weapons outside of Beacon after leaving the airship, or both shots) were really multiple "shots" strung together to make it look like a continuous one because Poser couldn't handle the full length at once. Yeah they really needed to switch.
      I talked about that stuff in an earlier draft but had to cut it down in favor of a shorter runtime. This thing was probably 25+ minutes at one point. Those panels at the end allowed it to be so much shorter.

    I love this video. I was waiting for people to address how different RWBY looked throughout the volumes. I honestly really miss the volume 1-3 design (especially volume 3). The Maya animation from volume 4 and on make the characters feel more distant (??).. I don't really know how to explain it. Anyway, great video!

    Loved the video man, I've always been interested the visual evolution of RWBY and it tends to not get discussed much in-depth besides the obvious engine change
    Also the part about Nora's ribbon blew my mind because I heard them talk about it in the commentary as if they cut it before making it into the show so I'd never noticed it

  • @evilwolf72

    It was really amazing as well with the evolution of the plot fit really well with the evolution of roosterteeth as a studio and their animation. Like with each season you got more skill with the animation combined with more depth of the world. Kinda like your looking at season one through a blurry scope and the more you focus the more the world came to life with each season.
    It obviously wasn’t intentional but it really lent to the show overall

    Hey dude, great work here. I don't watch a lot of RWBY analysis videos, but this is definitely a good example of how to do it well.
    I just have one suggestion about readability: The comparisons at the end can be easily obscured when the video is paused due to YT's video layout. A lot of the times you have text at the very bottom, and that's where the bar/time/settings icons are. I'd keep that in mind when making graphics in the future. An easy fix for now though would be to link an album of those images in the video description. (Also, I'd say your font choice/colors could be better for the smaller text, but that might just be me and my bad eyesight)

    • @robinrising_
      @robinrising_  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! About the comparisons, that wasn't something I ran into with my computer because of its... well it's not a standard-sized display so it doesn't cut video when I pause. I'll keep that in mind!
      And I will get to making a gallery of all the images and link it as you said. It will be up shortly.

    I've been waiting for a video like this! Glad to see that you also seem to have a good grasp on lighting and effects terminology; I think that gives you a vocabulary that helps breakdown specific differences in an easily-accessible way.
    Also new in V4: Wrists! Weiss has no wrists in V3, and Ruby doesn't have them in V2 either (and I only noticed just now because of the board game clip you used). Just floating severed hands stuffed into overly long sleeves. *shudder*

  • @SwitchbackCh
    @SwitchbackCh 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Though V3's models looked the smoothest in the Poser era, there was something about the lighting in Volume 2 I really liked. The bloom and colours seem much more prominent, and background colours seem more muted which made the characters stand out more. That said, the environments have consistently gone up and Atlas/Mantle in Volume 7 looks really gorgeous at places. Also, I never liked the shaded lips, they have always bothered me and always will, sadly. :c It's a subtle but substantial tipping point for me that looks "too 3D" and lacks that initial anime appeal.

  • @Riinkun
    @Riinkun 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I don't know if this is just me, but while watching Volume 6 I also noticed they may have added some extra little details to the characters models, e.g. fingernails, that weren't there before. As a post-Volume 7 perspective, I'd say that besides fight choreography improving, there haven't been too many changes in quality/visual development, which is nice in terms of consistency.

      I plan to make a video on it after RWBY Volume 7 is done airing. Sometime in that offseason.
      The only thing I'll say for now is that
      1 - fights in V3 were much more heavily scripted
      2 - After Monty passed, fights began to be animated by multiple people (four even) and not just one person doing the entire thing (which often was just Monty)
      As for choreography itself, I haven't done enough research recently to form too many thoughts other than that V6 and V7 so far seem to hold true to his style

      @praetorianrex5571 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@robinrising_ it's mostly text based, although I've seen working extensively on one of the designs. First I'll describe the group of creatures collectively, the Verandertiers, and then explain a single example.
      The Verandertier(s) (from tier verander, German for "changed beast"), are creatures native to the world of Remnant, being direct and indirect descendants of the planet's original inhabitants (who occupied the planet before the Gods remade it as they please). Like the Grimm, they are known to be a threat to to humanity. But unlike the Grimm, which do so for the sake of it and live to do so, Verandertiers attack out of a sense of self preservation, defending territory and young, or otherwise "misbehaving", being neither good nor evil. their unique status as lifeforms not made by the Gods and the unstable, chaotic, and always changing ecosystem the planet used to have, the Verandertiers are capable of "improvised ontogeny", a mutation like metamorphosis that allows an individual animal or other lifeforms to adapt to a variety of situations and to enable rapid evolution. An animal or person becomes one if they have a "V base" in their genetic makeup that then activates by various causes, usually life threatening ones like allergies, toxins, extreme injuries, etc. The resulting form is usually superior to its original counterpart in at least a few ways. As you can tell, a lot about these guys is biological and natural. This is because I am a HUGE fan of bringing creatures to a context like this, justifying why and how beautiful creatures do the things they do. They're also like this to differentiate them from the demonic Grimm, which to me, the huntsmen would be very used to at this point. So something new like the Verandertiers popping out of the blue should provide a couple of interesting and unique challenges for our heroes and villains.
      The specific example will come soon.

    Vol 2 and 3 had the best artstyle. The newer volumes are definitely technically impressive but the model designs are honestly terrible. Early volumes actually looked more like anime in part due to the simple shading and lighting but also because of facial and body proportions. In early volumes, the nose and mouth are bit higher up on the face, the irises of the eyes are much larger compared to the Sclera and a lot more oval-shaped as well (especially evident in vol 1), which is much more reminiscent of anime. The narrower shoulders also a closer to anime artstyles and these elements serve to make the characters look really cute. The only thing that isn't really "anime" about the earlier volumes is the large hand size which is not nearly as significant in impacting the feel of the artstyle as the facial and core body features. The new models just look ugly in comparison because they threw out a bunch of the anime-esque features.
