  • This is dash cam footage of my driving test. I passed on my first attempt.
    Here's a map of the route: drive.google.com/open?id=1Gi8...
    I watched this video and practiced the route: • Maryland MVA Driving T... (Thanks John)
    Check out his other videos if you're doing your test in a different location.
    Tips:
    If you go to the MVA on a Sunday you can practice on the closed course. (You might even see other drivers using their own cones.) *EDIT: This may no longer be the case. On Sunday August 26th 2018 the closed course was blocked off. (Reported by user 'Dorky McThuggerson')
    Let the examiner see you adjusting your mirrors.
    Make sure that both you and the examiner are buckled in before starting the engine.
    Always use your turn signals, even on the closed course.
    Make sure you come to a complete stop at every stop sign, and before turning right on red.
    Stop at pedestrian crossings if people are trying to cross. (There's one in the MVA parking lot)
    Stay within 5 MPH of the speed limit, do not break it.
    Check your mirrors after turning into a new road.
    Check your mirrors every 10 seconds.
    Exaggerate your head checks.
    When changing lanes, check your mirrors, signal, then check your blind spot.
    Make a mental note of any signs you pass.
    Maintain a good following distance.
    Stay in your lane.
    Drive smoothly.
    Never take both hands off the wheel.
    When the examiner tells you to park, use the parking brake.
    Good luck!

    I just did my road exam and passed!!!! It was very easy despite being nervous!! It’s the exact course. If you’re a nervous wreck like me and want to pass then go to Beltsville. The instructors can be a little too serious but I had a great one. At first she was a little serious and gave me two warnings (I turned too slow on my left turns) and I relaxed after she said “that’s better” after I did it a bit faster on a right turn. We then started a convo until I got back because I don’t like silence. I think it’s best to start a convo even if the instructor remains silent. It helps you feel more at ease. The course was really easy and short!!!

    How do you manage your speed correctly because I’m scared that I’m going to go five under or over also do you think the course is the same and I know this is too much but was the test easy and if so what was the hardest part

    • @Roller-D
      @Roller-D  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Practice! Seriously, keep practicing the course until you feel 100% comfortable.
      Users have commented as recently as one month ago stating that the course was still the same, so i’m pretty sure it is.
      If you’ve practiced enough you will have memorized the speed limit of each road. To manage your speed, when you’re about to reach the limit, slow down just a little bit and check your speedometer periodically to make sure you don’t go over the limit. When practicing, learn how to maintain a constant speed by slightly adjusting the pressure applied to the accelerator pedal, and by listening to your car’s engine.
      In my opinion the test was easy, but i had practiced a lot and was relaxed. I think that’s one of the most important things, staying relaxed. Try to pretend it’s just another practice run, and ignore that clipboard wielding stranger.
      If i had to choose the hardest part, it would probably be the two-point turn. It really isn’t that hard though, as long as you’ve practiced enough and stay relaxed.

I asked her not to scream at me (very respectfully), told her that it was not neccesary because I speak english (even if I'm latina), and she was absolutely ofended! and whisper the rest of the instructions. I told her "thanks" and she replied "you're not welcome". At the end I just asked her why the attitude? and she almost cry in rage... was really fun to watch her so mad. I did not pass because she told me to return to the MVA, and I did not remember the address.... so that was unfair, and probably not legal. But oh well... I will do it again, not big deal.

      My advice is to keep practicing the course until you feel 100% comfortable, and then you’ll be able to relax during the test because you know exactly what you’re doing. If you practice enough and stay relaxed, it’ll be easy.
      Here’s what I did for the reverse parking:
      When I stopped the car at 1:30 I could see the front-left cone through the rear passenger window. When I started reversing I immediately turned the wheel about 3/4 of the way, then I used the right side mirror to aim the side of the car towards the front-left cone, adjusting the wheel slightly when needed. When I got close to that cone, I could then see the front-right cone in my left side mirror. I used both side mirrors to direct the car between the cones, and then I continued to reverse until the front of the car had cleared the cones.
      Try not to reverse too far. If you hit the curb you’ll fail.
      Remember to check your mirrors and blind spots during this maneuver, so your examiner can see you’re aware of your surroundings.
      If your car has a backup camera, use it! The MVA will allow this but you’ll still have to check your mirrors and blind spots.
      If your car doesn’t have a backup camera you might want to use some blind spot mirrors, like I do. They’re cheap and can be very useful during your test, including the two-point turn.
      You're allowed to turn right on red unless there's a sign saying otherwise. Just remember to come to a complete stop at the line before turning.
      They only asked me about one sign. At 11:16 I had to tell them what speed limit sign we had just passed. Another user said they were asked about 3 signs. So it’s a good idea to memorize the signs while you’re practicing.

      Good information, but did you mention the camera, can I use it in the exam or is it a mistake to use it?

    • @Roller-D
      @Roller-D  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The car i used does not have a backup camera. They will allow you to use a backup camera during the test but you must still check your mirrors and blind spots. Here's what the MVA has to say about this: "Even though the MVA will permit the use of a back-up camera or an audio back-up warning device during testing, the driver must continue to observe traffic and use the vehicle's mirrors, properly. You will be scored on the requirements and criteria of the skills test and backing a motor vehicle requires skill and good judgment. Therefore, an individual should not rely solely on the use of back-up equipment. Using mirrors, observing traffic, and looking over your shoulders are some of the proper precautions to safely back up your vehicle." Source: www.mva.maryland.gov/about-mva/info/26300/26300-28T.htm

    Failed my first attempt on the COVID close circuit and the instructor told me I stopped on "curb lines", are we supposed to drive over the yellow crossed lines before the last STOP sign (before end of test) or steer away from them? Extremely confused please someone answer me my test is this week, thank you

    • @Roller-D
      @Roller-D  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Driving over a curb will result in an automatic failure, even if it’s just a line representing a curb. The yellow crossed lines you’re referring to should be ok, just be careful not to drive over any lines that are representing curbs.
      Here’s a video of the current test at Gaithersburg. It has a lot of useful comments from people who passed the test at different MVAs, including Beltsville. th-cam.com/video/S1ePz7Rlm9A/w-d-xo.html

    • @Roller-D
      @Roller-D  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You’ll have to use a different method. Here’s how i did it. When i stopped the car at 1:30 i could see the front-left cone through the rear passenger window. When i started reversing i immediately turned the wheel about 3/4 of the way, then i used the right side mirror to aim the side of the car towards the front-left cone, adjusting the wheel slightly when needed. When i got close to the cone i used both side mirrors while adjusting the wheel to straighten the car, then i continued to reverse until i could see the cones in front of the car.
      Remember to check your mirrors and blind spots during this maneuver, so your examiner can see that you’re aware of your surroundings.
      If your car has a backup camera, use it! The MVA will allow this but you’ll still have to check your mirrors and blind spots.
      If your car doesn’t have a backup camera you might want to try some blind spot mirrors. They’re cheap and can be very useful during your test, including the two-point turn.

You just have to be between the cones and the front of your car must clear the front set of cones. Some time between 9am and 11am on a weekday would be good. Most people are at work or school and it's before lunch time. Keep in mind that the scheduled time of your test might not be when it actually starts because you'll have to wait in line. So for example, if you want your test to start at 10am i suggest scheduling it for 9:30am.

      They changed it due to COVID. Check out this video: th-cam.com/video/lEeek9AivZQ/w-d-xo.html
      A user named Errol Fisk, who recently passed the test at Beltsville, left a very informative comment. I've copied and pasted it below, just in case you can't find it in that video's comment section.
      "I passed today in Beltsville. As of Nov. 23, 2021, the test was exactly like this. I highly recommend driving up to the MVA location a few times before taking it and observing the test being conducted. At the Beltsville location you can conveniently watch from the parking lot.
      What's on the test:
      You drive out to either the A or B course and wait for the instructor. The proctor first will tell you to pull in nose first into the parking space. It was a right turn on both courses at Beltsville. You have 3 minutes to pull in to the right with signals all the way in, don't hit any cones, straighten the wheel, put the car in park.
      Next, the proctor will tell you to reverse out of the parking spot and to reset to the original position. Be careful backing out as there was an artificial curb that extended about 1.5 feet past the first set of cones. Once you've gotten out of the space, you can pull forward if necessary to straighten the car before reversing straight backwards to the original position, it may be too cramped otherwise.
      Now you'll need to reverse park (backing into the space tail first). From the starting position, the instructor told me to pull straight forward. On a previous attempt, I tried to move over to the right a bit to get closer to the cones and angle my front to the left by pulling forward. You can't do that, I guess. SO. You have 3 minutes to pull forward from the starting position past the line of cones on the left edge of the parking spot. Shift into reverse and use your signal. Go slow and begin to turn the wheel to move your car's rear to get between the two lines of cones. Go slow at first if necessary and remember to use your right mirror as a gauge, and that you can turn the wheel left or right in reverse to better adjust your angle, which is why it's good to go slow, so you have time to judge and adjust the angle before you get too close. You also can pull forward to straighten the car before backing in if necessary. Now you've backed in to the parking space. Put the car in park.
      Now you'll need to pull to the right out of the parking spot. Shift into drive, put on your right turn signal and pull out of the space. Once you've gotten out of the space, turn to the right and stop at the stop sign.
      Next is the three point turn, which you also have 3 minutes to complete. A few feet from the stop sign is the three point turn space. For reference, it is a section of artificial concrete curbs about 3 parking spots wide but with quite a bit deeper depth. Right turn signal in and hug the right side of the curb without hitting it, pulling in so the front of the car is about halfway inside and brake to stop. Left turn signal and turn the wheel all the way to the left, foot off the brake, go but don't hit the curb, brake. Next, right turn signal, shift into reverse, turn the wheel all the way to the right, let off the brake and go backwards, don't hit the curb, I used my left mirror to help gauge how far my car was from the curb. Next, left turn signal again, shift into drive, turn wheel all the way to the left, let off brake, go forward. Ideally, you only need those three turns, but you're allowed to do as many as you like, so feel free to reverse and turn the wheel right again and then do the final left turn if needed so you don't hit the curb. Now that your car's nose is facing the other direction, the proctor will tell you to reverse straight into the space. Just reverse without hitting the curb, don't worry about the lines.
      Next, the proctor will tell you to pull up to the stop sign a couple yards down. Turn signal right and pull out the area, go straight, stop completely at the stop sign. The proctor will tell you to turn left and drive down to the section of the parking lot for those who passed. Pull up into one of the parking spots (don't hit the curb) and park. I don't even think I was straight or inside the lines at all, but my lot was empty, so I'm not sure if it matters. The proctor will then have your parent/guardian/supervisor drive the car back to the other parking lot. You'll go inside and get your photo taken, get a temporary license certificate, and the physical card will come in the mail in about a week.
      If at any point you hit a curb/cone or run out of time to complete an exercise, the instructor will stop you and call over your parent/guardian/supervisor, they'll get back in the passenger seat and you'll drive out. I HIGHLY recommend you make your parent promise to not get mad or angry with you if you fail. They'll likely be worked up, tired of waiting in lines for 2 hours, and irritated they took off work, so make them promise to be kind and calm and honor it. I failed the first time, and my dad yelling at me was worse than the feeling of failing the test, so set everything up accordingly.
      Tips: Visit the MVA location a couple times and observe the test. Go home and practice the maneuvers again and again. Simulate the experience as much as possible. I practiced several times at night in a large, empty parking lot which allowed me to simulate the "stop signs" (trees), etc. My parent would stand outside the car and administer the test like the proctor, which was better practice than having them sit next to me and coaching me through it.
      Bring a pen with you to the MVA and double check to make sure your insurance ID card is up to date and registration is valid. Check to make sure all the lights and turn signals, hazards, and horn work the night before.
      Make sure you've got at least a half tank of gas.
      My god, that was long, but I just want to help in any way I can. Best of luck everybody! And don't be ashamed if you don't get it on your first or second try, schedule a couple tests in advance." - Errol Fisk

      Yes, but read this information from the MVA website first:
      "Even though the MVA will permit the use of a back-up camera or an audio back-up warning device during testing, the driver must continue to observe traffic and use the vehicle's mirrors, properly. You will be scored on the requirements and criteria of the skills test and backing a motor vehicle requires skill and good judgment. Therefore, an individual should not rely solely on the use of back-up equipment. Using mirrors, observing traffic, and looking over your shoulders are some of the proper precautions to safely back up your vehicle."
