1:18 “A lot of us [Filipinos] can speak Spanish” This is patently false. Even at the peak of Spanish colonialism, only the elites (less than 5%) spoke fluent Spanish. Lots of Spanish words were assimilated into Philippine languages, that much is true. And we even have a bastardized version of Spanish (chavacano). But today, less than 1% of Filipinos are hispanohablante.
I agree. Rizal wrote that in his El Filibusterismo: "What are you going to do with Castillan, the few of you who will speak it"--Jose Rizal, El Filibuterismo. When the Americans came, the Americans excluded the native speakers from those who were qualified to vote. But those who spoke Spanish or English were qualified voters, This I know because I read THE FILIPINO PEOPLE ASK JUSTICE SPEECH OF HON. MANUEL L. QUEZON OF THE PHILIPPINES IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES -FEBRUARY 13 1913. According to Quezon there was a problem with it. By not giving the native speakers the right to vote, only 15% would be able to vote "The gentleman from Pennsylvania cited in the following language the qualifications required by law to be an elector in the Philippines Anybody may vote who was an officeholder under the Spanish regime or who is able to speak or write either English or Spanish or who possesses property to the value of $250 gold or who pays taxes to the amount of $15 per annum The gentleman considers these requirements very simple I beg to take issue with the gentleman from Pennsylvania in his proposition that these requirements are simple if by this he means that in civilized countries the majority of the people at least should have these qualifications Were they to be applied in the United States there would be an enormous reduction in the electorate The population shall have in their hands the sole guidance of the ship of state If it is not Americanism to permit 15 per cent of the Filipinos to govern their countrymen what is it to permit five Americans to govern the whole population"---Manuel L Quezon
Well, the percentage does go up to about 80% of the population who spoke it as their SECOND LANGUAGE (circa 1940s before WW2). Newspapers were written in Spanish. Legal documents were in Spanish. How do you think Filipinos were able to communicate with one another -- from Luzon to Mindanao -- when there were so many dialects? Filipinos had to use a lingua franca, which was Spanish.
@@scriptedbeauty1only the ruling elite and government used Spanish as a lingua Franca.....the majority didn't speak it at all. All academic sources confirms that. And as being established as a province of the Kingdom, everyone should assimilate with the spanish language. In the latin countries they are forced to speak it hence the linguistic legacy. In the Philippines, the fear of retaliation and awareness makes the spanish language very exclusive only to certain classes. After the first Philippine revolution, american occupation came. But their goal is to change idealism to spread democracy hence thomasites were instructed to teach english and all should have access to free education hence the spread of english across the country as a lingua franca.

The stark majority of Filipinos do not speak nor understand Spanish. We share some words, but not the majority of words. Our grammar is still mostly Austronesian.
Wthile I can only speak for the Tagalog grammar because I was born and grew up in Manila I know that Tagalog is not even near Spanish grammar i.e., just because they share some words, that does not mean they're mutually intelligible. In Tagalog, there are eleven conjugations per tense and it is not dependent on who or how many are doing it. In Spanish there are six conjugations per tense and it depends on who and how many are doing the action. For example all the following verbs are in the present progressive of the same verb bumabalot, Nagbabalot, ipinagbabalot, Nangbabalot, binabalot, binabalutan, ipinambabalot, Ibinabalot, .. this type of structure does not even exist in Spanish. Spanish verb conjugations are totally different. BTW there are many words shared between Spanish and English, some all the way to spelling. Spanish will never be the general language of the country, the people will never talk it, because the conceptions of their brains and the feelings of their hearts cannot be expressed in that language"--Jose Rizal, El Filibuterismo. La Solidaridad v.6 yr.1894 Mr. Nieto hit the mark many times about the vicious administration of such an important colony , specially fixing on the lack of compliance of the intelligent Law of the Indies , protector of the native , to whom not even the Spanish language has been taught and little or nothing is being done to educate . 1897 Filipinas por España: Narración episódica de la rebelión en el archipiélago filipino, Volume 2 By Emilio Reverter Delmas, Printed Centro editorial de A. Martín, 1897 - Philippines This writer was narrating Rizal's death as well as the insurrection that followed. Clearly he was describing how Spanish was BARELY SPOKEN IN THE PHILIPPINES. "The natives have no knowledge of our Spanish language. It's almost the same as it was during Legazpi's time. They barely understand us and we do not understand the natives, not little, not much. The leyes de Indias (Laws on Education) that has been much talked about has never been complied with and they are dead letters. The same as other laws on the teaching of the Spanish language." In December 30, 1937, Manuel Quezon had to proclaim Tagalog as the basis of the national language because there was no lingua franca, I.e, Spanish was still the same as Rizal said it was “what are you going to do with Castilian, the few of you who will speak it” "Today there is not one language that is spoken and understood by all the Filipinos, nor even by a majority of them, It is unnecessary for me to demonstrate how essential it is for our people to have one language that can be used by all in their daily intercourse. Such language cannot be either English or Spanish, except perhaps, if ever, only after many generations and at a very great cost. We cannot wait that long. "
Even in 1901, Spanish was never the general language. Manuel L Quezon, said so when he declared the national language of the Philippines in 1937. Manuel Quezon was not against Spanish but he said when the Americans took over, Spanish was not the general language even after 333 years. He said to make Spanish the general language, if ever, it would cost a lot and many generations will have to come before it could happen and the people could not wait that long. Spanish was the official language, but being official does not mean it was the language everyone spoke. The same thing happened in Poland, Latin was the official language but the general population continued speaking Polish

The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the girl on duty there and brought Peter in. "You are not one of his disciples, are you?" the girl at the door asked Peter. He replied, "I am not." ... As Simon Peter stood warming himself, he was asked, "You are not one of his disciples, are you?" He denied it, saying, "I am not." One of the high priest's servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, "Didn't I see you with him in the olive grove?" 1:18 “A lot of us [Filipinos] can speak Spanish”
This is patently false.
By not giving the native speakers the right to vote, only 15% would be able to vote
"The gentleman from Pennsylvania cited in the following language the qualifications required by law to be an elector in the Philippines Anybody may vote who was an officeholder under the Spanish regime or who is able to speak or write either English or Spanish or who possesses property to the value of $250 gold or who pays taxes to the amount of $15 per annum The gentleman considers these requirements very simple I beg to take issue with the gentleman from Pennsylvania in his proposition that these requirements are simple if by this he means that in civilized countries the majority of the people at least should have these qualifications Were they to be applied in the United States there would be an enormous reduction in the electorate
The population shall have in their hands the sole guidance of the ship of state If it is not Americanism to permit 15 per cent of the Filipinos to govern their countrymen what is it to permit five Americans to govern the whole population"---Manuel L Quezon
All Filipinos are mixed race.
Today only 0.5% speak Spanish and DNA test by natgeo genome 2.0 states only 5% of Filipinos have any European blood destroying the myth that Filipinos are mixed with Spanish(Viet n Cambodian have more French blood then Filipinos have Spanish but you never see us bragging about our conquerors.)
@@teovu5557colonizers are never to be bragged on, there are just cultures built and shared unique of that nation. In the case of Philippines, Spanish Castillian language have been reserved to only people with direct association with the friars. This is a classic example of early corruption.

Abdomen

“A lot of us can speak spanish” Ma’am, respectfully, it’s 2024 not 1901, majority of us do not speak spanish.
Spanish speakers even before 1901:
El Filibusterismo by Jose Rizal published 1891:
"What are you going to do with Castillan, the few of you who will speak it. Spanish will never be the general language of the country, the people will never talk it, because the conceptions of their brains and the feelings of their hearts cannot be expressed in that language"--Jose Rizal, El Filibuterismo.
La Solidaridad v.6 yr.1894
Mr. Nieto hit the mark many times about the vicious administration of such an important colony , specially fixing on the lack of compliance of the intelligent Law of the Indies , protector of the native , to whom not even the Spanish language has been taught and little or nothing is being done to educate .
1897
Filipinas por España: Narración episódica de la rebelión en el archipiélago filipino, Volume 2 By Emilio Reverter Delmas, Printed Centro editorial de A.
The same as other laws on the teaching of the Spanish language."
In December 30, 1937, Manuel Quezon had to proclaim Tagalog as the basis of the national language because there was no lingua franca, I.e, Spanish was still the same as Rizal said it was “what are you going to do with Castilian, the few of you who will speak it”
"Today there is not one language that is spoken and understood by all the Filipinos, nor even by a majority of them,
It is unnecessary for me to demonstrate how essential it is for our people to have one language that can be used by all in their daily intercourse. Such language cannot be either English or Spanish, except perhaps, if ever, only after many generations and at a very great cost. We cannot wait that long. "
LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK! Some Filipinos deny that they’re Asian and try to group themselves into another group!

SOUNDS LIKE PETER DENYING JESUS. READ THE GOSPEL BELOW:
The Gospel of John 18:15-27 describes the account of the three denials as follows:
Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest's courtyard, but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the girl on duty there and brought Peter in. "You are not one of his disciples, are you?" the girl at the door asked Peter. He replied, "I am not." ... As Simon Peter stood warming himself, he was asked, "You are not one of his disciples, are you?" He denied it, saying, "I am not." One of the high priest's servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, "Didn't I see you with him in the olive grove?" Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.
