Meanwhile Filipinos are all over her comments. So yes, some of you do feel it is a loss. What yall SHOULD be doing is encouraging her to unpack whatever internalized racism she’s experienced from the pervasive nature of colonialist ideology and reminding her that she should be proud of her Filipino heritage. Instead, yall do what you do best on social media, which is to act catty, nasty and desperately attempt to oust people from community’s they’re inherently apart of . Good luck w representation in the US and prideful Filipino Americans if you’re behaving that way..

@@kristinhannah001 There was NO country until the Spaniards came. It is Spain that created and built the Philippines. That's a fact. To exist as a country, you need 3 basic components such as sovereignty and map; government and Constitution; and settled population and citizenship. Spain contributed all 3 components and gave birth to the Philippines. Those are facts. References? SPAIN IS THE MOTHERLAND. VIVA PHILIPPINES 🇵🇭 🇪🇸 1565-1898
IMPERIO HISPANO Philippines was a part of Spanish Empire for 333 years
CITIZENSHIP All Filipinos were Spanish citizens during the Spanish regime.
LANGUAGE Spanish was the sole official language in the Philippines for 333 years. Many Filipinos were very fluent in Spanish including notable Filipinos like Emilio Aguinaldo and Jose Rizal who cannot speak Tagalog comfortably.
SOVEREIGNTY Spain issued the first and official Philippine map. (Murillo Velarde Map of 1734)
GOVERNMENT Spain established the offical Philippine constitution and yes it was written in Spanish. (Constitucion Politica de 1899). The Spanish established a centralized colonial government in the Philippines from 1565-1898. The political structure consisted of a national government ruled by a Governor General appointed by the King of Spain!
PHILIPPINE ANTHEM Officially written and sang in Spanish, Tagalog and (later) English

1:18 “A lot of us [Filipinos] can speak Spanish”
This is patently false. Even at the peak of Spanish colonialism, only the elites (less than 5%) spoke fluent Spanish. Lots of Spanish words were assimilated into Philippine languages, that much is true. And we even have a bastardized version of Spanish (chavacano). But today, less than 1% of Filipinos are hispanohablante.

I agree. Rizal wrote that in his El Filibusterismo: "What are you going to do with Castillan, the few of you who will speak it"--Jose Rizal, El Filibuterismo.
When the Americans came, the Americans excluded the native speakers from those who were qualified to vote. But those who spoke Spanish or English were qualified voters, This I know because I read THE FILIPINO PEOPLE ASK JUSTICE SPEECH OF HON. MANUEL L. QUEZON OF THE PHILIPPINES IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES -FEBRUARY 13 1913. According to Quezon there was a problem with it. By not giving the native speakers the right to vote, only 15% would be able to vote
"The gentleman from Pennsylvania cited in the following language the qualifications required by law to be an elector in the Philippines Anybody may vote who was an officeholder under the Spanish regime or who is able to speak or write either English or Spanish or who possesses property to the value of $250 gold or who pays taxes to the amount of $15 per annum The gentleman considers these requirements very simple I beg to take issue with the gentleman from Pennsylvania in his proposition that these requirements are simple if by this he means that in civilized countries the majority of the people at least should have these qualifications Were they to be applied in the United States there would be an enormous reduction in the electorate
The population shall have in their hands the sole guidance of the ship of state If it is not Americanism to permit 15 per cent of the Filipinos to govern their countrymen what is it to permit five Americans to govern the whole population"---Manuel L Quezon

In the case of Philippines, Spanish Castillian language have been reserved to only people with direct association with the friars. This is a classic example of early corruption. And as being established as a province of the Kingdom, everyone should assimilate with the spanish language. In the latin countries they are forced to speak it hence the linguistic legacy. In the Philippines, the fear of retaliation and awareness makes the spanish language very exclusive only to certain classes. After the first Philippine revolution, american occupation came. But their goal is to change idealism to spread democracy hence thomasites were instructed to teach english and all should have access to free education hence the spread of english across the country as a lingua franca.

      Spanish speakers even before 1901:
El Filibusterismo by Jose Rizal published 1891:
"What are you going to do with Castillan, the few of you who will speak it. Spanish will never be the general language of the country, the people will never talk it, because the conceptions of their brains and the feelings of their hearts cannot be expressed in that language"--Jose Rizal, El Filibuterismo.
      La Solidaridad v.6 yr.1894
Mr. Nieto hit the mark many times about the vicious administration of such an important colony , specially fixing on the lack of compliance of the intelligent Law of the Indies , protector of the native , to whom not even the Spanish language has been taught and little or nothing is being done to educate .
      1897
Filipinas por España: Narración episódica de la rebelión en el archipiélago filipino, Volume 2 By Emilio Reverter Delmas, Printed Centro editorial de A. Martín, 1897 - Philippines This writer was narrating Rizal's death as well as the insurrection that followed. Clearly he was describing how Spanish was BARELY SPOKEN IN THE PHILIPPINES.
"The natives have no knowledge of our Spanish language. It's almost the same as it was during Legazpi's time. They barely understand us and we do not understand the natives, not little, not much. The leyes de Indias (Laws on Education) that has been much talked about has never been complied with and they are dead letters. The same as other laws on the teaching of the Spanish language."
In December 30, 1937, Manuel Quezon had to proclaim Tagalog as the basis of the national language because there was no lingua franca, I.e, Spanish was still the same as Rizal said it was “what are you going to do with Castilian, the few of you who will speak it”
"Today there is not one language that is spoken and understood by all the Filipinos, nor even by a majority of them,
It is unnecessary for me to demonstrate how essential it is for our people to have one language that can be used by all in their daily intercourse. Such language cannot be either English or Spanish, except perhaps, if ever, only after many generations and at a very great cost. We cannot wait that long. "

Manuel Quezon was not against Spanish but he said when the Americans took over, Spanish was not the general language even after 333 years. He said to make Spanish the general language, if ever, it would cost a lot and many generations will have to come before it could happen and the people could not wait that long. Spanish was the official language, but being official does not mean it was the language everyone spoke. The same thing happened in Poland, Latin was the official language but the general population continued speaking Polish

Nonetheless, nobody ever identifies Spaniards as Moors or the Irish as Brits. Watering down or denying their Filipino identity by citing some vague "Spanish" ancestry is self-loathing. I mean, what's wrong with simply being Filipino or Asian? After all, the Philippines was primarily colonized by soldiers and colonial administrators but was never a destination for Spanish civilians or settlers. Moreover, I've yet to meet or even hear of a single Filipino who grew up in a spanish-speaking household and NO. Many don't speak Spanish(?!?). Conversely, we grew up in a spanish-speaking household and NEVER felt the need to claim Spanish ancestry. *Demi Lovato, who is from New Mexico, is guilty of doing the same thing. Only it's pretty much confirmed that her dad is Mexican American. We've seen his photos, too, plus not hard to believe at all since they are from New Mexico. She once told a Mexican interviewer who kindly asked about her roots that she wasn't Mexican, but "Spain" after taking an ancestral DNA test. 🤡 What a dumazz. 🎉🎉 Many Mexican Americans ridiculed her stupidity. Selena Gomez never denies Her Mexican heritage. She is in fact always willing to happily discuss it and that's why we love and embrace Her.* 🌹

I don't know where that Filipina got her information from. Almost ALL Filipinos DO NOT speak Spanish, except the ones that took Spanish classes in school and the older generation (who are now well into their 90's and beyond or dead). There are a few words that are Spanish but with different spelling, like banyo, palengke, trabaho, presyo, keso, bintana, biktima, biyahe, reyna, tinidor, etc. That is the extent of 'Spanish' speaking in the Philippines.

I took a lot of Spanish classes in college and although I can understand what my mom says when she speaks it, IT IS NOT Spanish. SOUNDS LIKE PETER DENYING JESUS. READ THE GOSPEL BELOW:
The Gospel of John 18:15-27 describes the account of the three denials as follows:
Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest's courtyard, but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the girl on duty there and brought Peter in. "You are not one of his disciples, are you?" the girl at the door asked Peter. He replied, "I am not." ... As Simon Peter stood warming himself, he was asked, "You are not one of his disciples, are you?" He denied it, saying, "I am not." One of the high priest's servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, "Didn't I see you with him in the olive grove?" Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.
