  • Join me as I unbox and swatch my new coloured pencils, the Derwent Drawing Pencils set of 24. These coloured pencils are wax-based, lightfast pencils with a creamy texture. I enjoyed trying them out for the first time and look forward to completing a whole piece just with these pencils.
    Thank you for watching my video. Please leave a comment down below, like my video with a "thumbs up" and subscribe to my channel. I upload a new art video every week, and work primarily in coloured pencil and traditional gouache paint. My focus is wildlife as I have a passion for conservation and biology, but I also do pet portraits and "how to" videos as well.

    Lovely pencils. They are prone to waxy bloom. When used with Polychromos which are more oil based it would help to use the Polys on the bottom. And odorlous mineral spirits like Gamsol and a cheap eyemakeup sponge move the pigments and blend them great. If you put a coat of clear Liquitex gesso and then let it dryyour colors will pop. They are basically oil paint in a pencil. Even "wax based" contain oil and viceversa. Enjoy them. I have for many years and even though I have the super $ sets, Polychromos are just close to my heart. You might have Zest it where you live too. Have fun! 🤗

      Thank you, yes I know about the wax bloom and I don't use liquid solvents. I really enjoy using both the Polys and the Derwent Drawing, they're very different but both wonderful. 😊

      Great tips! I really love using these pencils. I love the look of oil paintings, but it seems a little complicated for me. The idea that I can use my pencils to get that look without having to invest in and learn a new medium is attractive to me. Thank you so much.

    Loved this, and loved the circles! For some reason, they gave me a much better sense of the color and gradient than the normal rectangular swatch. Look forward to watching more of your videos. Subscribed...and thank you!

    The art shop is the best art shop in Victoria in my opinion. Service is great they have a great range and cheap prices.I love visiting them in Bayswater whenever I travel to Melbourne and yes I usually have a big list lol. Thanks for your video with lovely big swatches. Beautiful pencils. Cheers.

    I love the mars violet sooooo much. And ink blue. I just recently got this set but I’ve posted too many new pencil vids lately so I’m going to wait a bit before putting it up😂 I think this set would work great for underlayers and backgrounds because of the thicker core and the pigment just comes off on the paper so quickly and easily. Agreed that it’s a great supplemental set, my polychromos and luminance have plenty of bright colors and frankly I don’t need more because I more frequently use neutrals and skin tones😂 I do wish those two light greens were more different, but besides that I wouldn’t change anything about this gorgeous color palette.

    • @brusheswithbec
      @brusheswithbec  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I absolutely love the mars violet too, it's my shortest colour after the white. :D The subtle tones are really beautiful, and they definitely do lay down well. Completely agree regarding the two greens being much too similar.

    One thing that's really interesting to see is the differences between the different shades on video vs on the paper in front of me. There are a couple of times that you say that the difference is quite subtle, but on the screen it's not. And I've noticed those particular shades (the greens for example) do look quite similar to me, too.
    I feel an experiment coming on. Think I may be taking photos of my own work partway through to see what the differences are...

    • @brusheswithbec
      @brusheswithbec  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes there's definitely a difference between what I see in person and on camera. Even in person the difference can be more or less depending on the lighting.

    Thanks for the review, I was on the fence about buying them just yet, but you convinced me to go ahead & get the set now🥰. Thanks again, I also subbed🙂 p.s. Just in case you haven't tried the Derwent Graphtint pencils, I'm guessing you very well may like them. I love them, due to their natural colors (like this set,) but in a graphite base, they're soft & smooth, AND they're water reactive too, just like watercolor pencils, making the colors even more beautiful! The two sets definitely look like they're intended to work perfectly together. I hope to get their tinted charcoal pencils set too. So far I'm happy with all the Derwent products I've collected!

      Love all of those you mentioned and Inktense (they seem to have the same texture when used dry plus a lovely effect with water. And the tinted charcoal are great too. I only bought one to test but you are right, I need the full tin.

      @@MedaHalmaciu Hi! I'll definitely try the charcoal pencils, thanks! I have the big, chunky, water-soluble, tinted graphitint bars & the 12 halfpan graphitint watercolor set, which I love🖤! I also enjoy Derwent's Inktense goodies too. I have some Inktense sticks & pencils. I recently purchased the brand new Inktense 24 Color Half Pan Set (half off $ at Blick online) & now "patiently" awaiting it's arrival...! In case you're interested, I just received the brand new Derwent Rechargeable (USB) Electric Eraser too & it's great. Worth the upgrade! It's lightweight, fast recharge, uses standard & fine eraser refills (+ the little adapter for the fine erasers too), is quieter than the battery powered Derwent eraser, stops as soon as the power button is released & has a slightly angled tip (like fine line cosmetic brushes), making erasing in tiny, hard to reach, or odd angled areas much easier! Apparently I'm a big Derwent fan😉 Thanks again~

      @MedaHalmaciu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jett8193 Yea, they have great products. I'm a fan too. I don't like anything electric because of the noise. I do have the Deewent super point sharpener. Works perfect for thinner pencils but don't recommend it for the ones like graphitint because it the pencils away too fast.

    Your drawings are just beautiful ! Have you tried pan pastels as a base for colored pencil? I’ve seen several videos where they have been used successfully and speed up the time it takes to complete a drawing. It works really well on pastelmat paper. It also seems that while most just start out using pan pastels for background, they are using the pan pastels even for some details.

    Are these better than prismas

    • @brusheswithbec
      @brusheswithbec  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wouldn't call them better or worse, they're very different to prismas. More waxy, but in my opinion a better build quality. Of course the colour range can't be compared because these only come in the 24 set.

  • @mary62996
    @mary62996 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @brusheswithbec
      @brusheswithbec  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No problem. I'm not sure what you expect to see from applying water, they are not water soluble pencils and remain the same as they already are when water is applied.
