These pencils are massively underrated! I've had them for years and I'm pretty sure they would have been my favorite pencils if there was a larger color range.
The lion turned out stunning! Not every drawing has to be photo realistic, it's fine for drawings to look like what they are :)

It has been said their colours are unique and their uniqueness is in the small number of pencils. Adding other colours would take away their uniqueness. I tend to agree.

These are indeed beautiful. I bought them recently and I was surprised how smooth they are. I wish Derwent expanded this line with more muted colors like these and same build quality.
I totally agree! A full 72 set with brighter colours included would make me very happy!

I have never used these pencils. I might consider these for the future. Your majestic lion turned out well with the neutral paper standing in as your midtones. You have such a pleasant personality...it's a joy to listen and watch your channel. Thanks for the demonstration.

I know how you feel, I can't rave about these pencils enough. The Mars Violet is my favourite colour too! I use it all the time in pieces, often as the only DD pencil among Polychromos. You did a really great job on the lion, I love those blue tones in the fur just under the eyes, it makes a big impact. I also really like the slightly less realistic more painterly style, it's something I struggle with but I find the DD pencils are really good for it, unlike harder pencils which are more suited to the super detailed realistic pieces.
Oh for sure, firmer pencils like Polychromos are easier for details. These Drawing Pencils are so buttery, I love them! And thank you. 😊
A sensational effort, Becky. I love the way you did his mane. Thanks for the tip about the toned paper. You mentioned they are expensive which reminded me I bought mine on sale from an art shop in Sydney. I haven’t really done much with them though. Not really a coloured pencil person. But I do like the Derwent Graphitint. Keep up the good work. You do brighten my day every time you post.
Thank you! My original set was $55, and now they cost around $70! 😵 Prices really have gone up on stuff. At least they are available as single pencils too. I hope you enjoy your set. 😊💜

This is one set of pencils that I really need to own. They're so different to my polychromos and my Lyras but I love the look of them. Beautiful drawing.
Oh yes, these are considerably different to those two sets, in their texture and softness. They might take a bit of getting used to. And thank you! 😊
I can see why you love these pencils so much. They deliver a great result. It is a shame that there are not more colors but still you can do a lot with them. I really like the first four colors together they would look good in a seascape or boat painting....and yes that mars violet reminds me of a caren d ache pencil that I have its lovely. Keep up the good work Becky:)

I can see quite a few different uses for this set, muted landscapes, skin tones and animals all come to mind. I have a few of these colours open stock and have not actually set this set before. Loved the lion, and the edit with its climax! The toned paper looks good too, did you enjoy working on it?
Thank you! 😊 Yes the paper was really great and I shall have to do some more drawings on it. Nice and sturdy, with a decent tooth but not too rough.

I have the Derwent Drawing pencils as well and used to use them a lot but for 2 years or so I haven't done a coloured pencil piece because I tried out other mediums. Now I am kind of scared to go back because I am one of those people who sat 30+ hours to complete a drawing and I don't know if I have the patience anymore. I rather grab my pan pastels and pastel pencils for details. So much quicker and looks almost the same.
Thank you! There is no way I could spend 30 hours on a single drawing. My hand can't handle it either; even this one had me needing to wear a brace for a while. 😭 But I still had fun with it nonetheless.
Beautiful handsome lion. I have six Derwent Drawing pencils. My favourite colours of the range are Smoke Blue and Solway Blue which I use for stormy skies.
Their heavy texture helps stressing the weigh of rainy clouds.
Still, I prefer the texture of Derwent Coloursoft and Graphitint better.
If Derwent Coloursoft came in more stormy blues, that would be great.
I do love stormy blues! The darker Ink Blue is my favourite though. I always love an indigo! 💙
@@BeckyTregear Indigos are beautiful, I agree. I love indigo by FC Polychromos, bluish gray by Derwent Watercolour, dark indigo by Derwent Graphitint. Yet lighter bluish grays are harder to come by. It’s only in the Derwent ranges did I find such perfect shades. Two in the Drawing line (Solway blue and Smoke blue). And one in the Coloursoft line (cloud blue). There are just no colours quite like that in any other brand I know of. I tried a couple of Caran d’Ache Luminance (swatched them at the store) but their pigment load is so powerful and strong the softness of shades just goes.
This pencil set is for people who draw (the tin says ‘Derwent Drawing’ LOL) and you definitely did the pencils justice. I’m just starting out to draw using a regular mechanical lead pencil. A very useful review and great drawing. Thank you!
They work well for colouring too, lol! But they're designed for traditional drawing techniques, especially colours like sanguine which are great for life drawing. (I forgot to mention these could be used for life drawing or portraits!). I still use mechanic pencils but I generally prefer regular old graphite pencils with varying softness. Whatever gets the job done! 😁

These are some of my favorite pencils also! Well ,you probably knew that already😂 they have this soft but strong feel to them, like they can go down so smoothly but the core itself isn’t going to break. I don’t understand the order of the colors either to be honest. I did feel like two of those greens are a bit tooooo similar and one could’ve been swapped out for another color, but generally I have no complaints either! I love how your lion turned out. I know what you mean about fur though. It’s frustrating. It does seem like these pencils are made to complement toned paper ahh! I’ll try that next time (I haven’t touched my toned paper in ages). When you said cats have episodes of psychosis I felt that😂
I know how much you love the pencils too! They are superb really, and yes a couple of the greens are close in colour to each other. I felt the cat's psychosis too - ouch! 🥴

That's totally fair! I think it's because they are so very different from any other pencil out there and it can be good or bad, depending on the individual. There are products that people rave about which I'm not so keen on. Brush and Pencil for example. 🤷

That’s beautifully done. I have some of these. Of course, I would like the set (art supply addiction) but like you say they aren’t cheap. Although I did see just now, for folk in the UK, Hobbycraft have the 24 for slightly less than Amazon UK at the moment. What is your recommendation for blending? I use a pencil blender as I don’t like the smell of the liquid blenders (although Zest is okay but I haven’t had blending success with it so far haha) Have you ever used powder blender? I would love to see a video from you on different blending techniques and your favourites 🙂🌺
Thank you! Prices definitely vary for the pencils, and they are more expensive here than a few years ago, wah! For blending I pretty much just use Gamsol Odourless Mineral Spirits because it has no smell at all (that I can detect). I haven't tried using powder blender so maybe I'll check that out sometime. 😊
I had to buy all my DDP’s separately because they were 1/3rd the price on sale at my local as singles and I just couldn’t resist....but it means I don’t have a tin 🤪And I love tins! I wish I could find the empty tins here but, oh well... I’m happy to at least have the pencils cos I lovvvveeee them, love the smell, love Derwent! (love Graphitints too, I bought them for same deal as single pencils)❤️❤️❤️
P.S. That’s the order that they’re on the Derwent site official colour chart as well and how they come in the tin with the Light Sienna first, weird, but yeah, that’ll be why she did it that way too 🤗
Fair enough reason! Following the default arrangement takes a lot less time than going through every single brand and rearranging them to one's personal taste, lol.
got my 24 pencil-set today in my local store for only 45€ - amazon germany wants 67€ for it 🙂
That's great that you were able to find it for a decent price! I think Amazon AU had it for a more expensive price too.

The only negative I have ever heard about the Derwent Draw pencils is the number of colours in it. :D I love them and has worn out a couple of the ink blue pencils. They could well end up being the only coloured pencils I keep around.
They are such an awesome set, and Ink Blue is definitely a favourite. Big Cats and Domestic cats are so much alike, aside from their size. 😂
Id like to put these pencils on my xmas list . Im wondering are these the color soft pencils..its a bit overwhelming to figure the name out as derwent has mant pencil set??? I looked up derwent drawing pencils thru jerrys artarama but i keep getting 2b 4h graphic pencils (for example )set and.im not really sure whatvto look for.....great review nice sketching and drawing process...👩🎨✍🎨
They are definitely confusing. Usually a drawing pencil is exactly that; graphite! 😂 Derwent Drawing Pencils are actual coloured pencils, and they are their own unique group of 24 pencils, and can be a little more difficult to find. They're not the same as the Coloursoft range. I hope that helps! 💜

Are the colours with the same names, also the same colours across derwent ranges? A few similar names are in the lightfast set - i'd be really interested in a Lightfast & Drawing comparison.
I'm not entirely sure. I think a couple of them are the same or similar, like wheat. I'll have to look at them together. 😊

Looks like they're just in order by number rather than actual color :) I love these pencils but every time I sit down to use them I miss the brighter colors.
Brights would be lovely too! I had to supplement with the pink Luminance pencils even in this drawing. But other than that they are a lovely set. 😊 (Also it bothers me when numbers don't match colour order, lol!)

Yes, they’re the same pencils, Derwent just updated their tin designs in the last couple of years, and the fox is an older version. The price for the pencils has gone up, at least in Australia, no doubt thanks to inflation. 😭

I prefer the Fox! As drawing pencils are they graphit and tinted, or simply colour pencils? PS: It has been said that their colours are unique and their uniqueness is in the small number of pencils. If they added additional colours their uniqueness would be gone!
These ones are pretty much regular wax coloured pencils and aren't water soluble like the graphitints. That is very true...but I'd still be happy if they released a bright colour set too. 😁
I 5hink the light sienna is placed first because of the number given 1610. It's the lowest number of the bunch.

The only negative thing I've heard about these pencils is not enough colors. They'd be great for Nature Journaling, unless you've got tropical birds or bright flowers.
I got it off Amazon: Ruby Charm Colors Big Book of Color Charts - I have added a couple of links in the description but I am not sure if it's still available or if there's an updated version as my copy came out in 2020. I definitely wish there were more colours, and some brighter ones in the set!

How on earth can you churn out so many artworks a week??? 👏👏👏 I really like that Chinese White pencil, my favourite white ever!
I tend to film videos in advance or work on multiple ones at the same time so that I can stagger art days with editing ones. I am paying for this drawing though because my hand and wrist are sore and I need to rest them. 😭
