ECCLESFIELD: Sheffield Parish #1 of 3

  • Welcome to SHEFFIELD!
"Open land near a Romano-British Christian church". That’s the meaning of this place, or at least one of them that’s believed anyway. An alternative suggestion is that the first element derives from a Saxon personal name or an association with water - and water is found in abundance here.
This parish is made up of five principal settlements including Chapeltown, High Green, Burncross and Grenoside and the small hamlet of Whitley. With some 32,073 people living here at the 2011 Census, this is South Yorkshire’s biggest in terms of population
The "Minster of the Moors” is a title that could grace any church but here, that’s what this one was known as. It was once the church for the whole of Hallamshire, incorporating the parishes of Sheffield (which incidentally is now based at Sheffield Cathedral) and Bradfield.
You’ll find a priory here too along with several old buildings, some coal mining, ironworking and even sandstone workings in its past. This is the parish of Sheffield that gave us the Arctic Monkeys, and it’s also one steeped in railway history too. Way more than I could possibly fit into one episode of TVI, this one spans a huge area of the North Eastern corner of the City of Sheffield.
This is the stupendously large and very interesting parish of ECCLESFIELD.

    ECCLESFIELD ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
    - Ecclesfield used to be even bigger. The Western half was sliced off to Bradfield around the 1890s, and Sheffield gradually nibbled away at the Southern edge where the boundary used be almost as far south as Herries Road. As a result, the 33,000 people in what was Ecclesfield parish in the 1901 census covered a larger area than the current parish. Lots of those people were in Hillsborough, Wadsley Bridge, Parson Cross, Shiregreen - all now Sheffield.
    - There use to be bull baiting on the village green in Ecclesfield. A local story tells of one apparently escaping and gouging a man
Theres is or was a tunnel running from the church to the priory. There's also a Priest Hall too. In the church there's a jumbled up small stained glass window that was smashed during the reformation and part of a cross which was thought to be saxon but its now thought to date back earlier.

I can imagine that's likely due to Sheffield gradually growing and expanding as it has since the turn of the 1800s. All these former settlements which used to be their own thing have merged into the city as suburbs. The same thing happened in the South with places like Beighton and Mosborough, the latter of which used to be in Derbyshire!

Pretty impressive though when you consider 1901 the population of Britain as a whole was really small compared to now
