I was born and brought up in Sheffield, had to leave in order to get a job. So sad as how the city has been hacked into little pieces in order to access it. Bus services wierd now. Visiting Mum in hospital requires taxi services now, no through bus. Live in Leicester now, has good train access, courtesy of Midland Mainline. Can get to football now, pensioner discount on train fare plus free fare on Supertram. Wednesday also has senior citizen discount, enables me to come. I can now support the Massive. WAWAW
That big circle on the ground on Black Swan Lane is a concreted over turn table to turn carriages around. There is a handle on the wall to turn it, though obviously it doesn't work anymore due to being concreted over.
Most Sheffielders who visit the city know about these places but have no reason to frequent them as there's nothing really down them. Mainly used as short cut walks.
As I have just said about the first two, a waste of money. Isolated and unused for the first one, the second one hardly used (like it used to be along with the first) so a waste of money if no one sees or uses them and the third, a dead end. Wow, how wonderful is that.
I know all theses places.... Its the people that make Sheffield such a fantastic place.... But if you live in a city where people call you love you will fall In love with it.. X
I've lived in Sheffield all my life n yes do know about these places. The sad fact is our canal pass is a shambles 😪 compared to other cities!! Shame on Sheffield!
These are great, thank you! I've been told that the circular concrete 'installation' in the ground at the closed end of Black Swan Walk was used originally a turntable to turn the coaches around so the horses could properly lead them out again. Do you think this is possible?
I was recently down black swan lain I think at one point it was open at the other end. It does look like some sort of rail track for a turntable or something
I took my 15 year old daughter down there to show her the place where the turntable was. It’s a funny little place, almost feels like you shouldn’t be there 😅
The first one, the Riverside walkway has been there years, it just used to be locked at the lady's Bridge end cus there used to be businesses operating before it was all done up and made into offices/flats, and they cleaned it up and made into a walkway.
Yea!! And it is one part of the 5 weirs walk from castlegate to meadowhall. Really nice to explore, I hope more people can notice about the hidden lanes in Sheffield!
I stayed in Sheffield for a week to work and I went to a few really good restaurants and the Ecclesall road but I didn't see the places in your video. I'm not only referring to the hidden places but the streets too. I truly enjoyed.

Good morning. It's a beautiful winter's sunny start to the day. Thank you for the 3 Sheffield secret alleyways. I have been to the first 2 but not the 3rd, secret place. I will go today as I am out walking. Have a great, happy, positive day and week
Is there enough to see and do in Sheffield for 3 days ? Over the past year and half, my wife and have had several short city breaks which have included London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Manchester, York and Liverpool, with three more repeat trips already planned for this year. I am trying to think of somewhere new to visit, for late in the year, or even early 2025, hence this question. Although my wife likes the shops, we both enjoy seeing new places of interest, such as museums, cathedrals etc. Birmingham, Chester, Cardiff, Sheffield, Aberdeen, Inverness are other possibilities.
I love Sheffield and have lived here for nearly 30 years - all of my adult life, but I wouldn't recommend it for such a trip unless you are coming for a specific event like the snooker or to access the Peak District (in which case, stay in the Peak District). There just isn't that much of interest to tourists here, but if you're happy to make like the locals and enjoy the green spaces, visit the few good shopping areas and visit plenty of real ale pubs, you'll be reyt.
Thank you. As shown here, the narrow lane across from Starbucks has a large concrete circle. It once had a turntable, to turn the horses and carts around, to get out of the narrow lane into town.
Was going to mention that bit of history! Thankyou. Learnt about the turntable through a history group I was with a few years back. There were so many hidden gems, but hardly any of our group knew about them. Hope the counci revitalises Chapel Walk to its former glory. Cx
I went to see the one o'clock time signal at the top of Fargate and then I was about to have a look down Black Swan Walk........and two dodgy chaps were just going down it in front of me, so I gave it a miss. It was lashing it down as well, I think it's a sunny day potter, everything looks better on a sunny day!
When you said 3 secrets I thought you were going to be going to the hidden tunnel and other hidden areas like the hidden hospital that you have to climb over a wall to get into the underground hospital.
I live in Sheffield and can confirm this video covers back alleys and areas under repair/maintenance I’ve been lucky to visit; New York, LA, Miami, Vegas, Paris, Milan, Berlin, London, Madrid, Barcelona, Prague, Oslo……. And many more All these beautiful Cities have large areas of rundown places, homelessness, graffiti, litter, crime etc…. It’s funny when it’s a smaller City people find it easier to poke fun. People live with blinkers on and pretend Hollywood isn’t full of Meth heads pushing carts around
I live in this area. Please don't go walking down the alleyway. It's a hideout for undesirables, and there's no alternative exit if you get cornered by anyone.
I’m a Sheffield born and bred,in 50 s and 60s anybody could walk where they wanted at night ,just shows over the years how so called government have miss managed England so bad ,that kids have to be monitored at all times ,and definitely not let out at night ! What do you think happened ???
My parents were young adults in the late 50s and early 60s, they’ve told me not much has really changed, there were definitely place you couldn’t go in Sheffield back then. From my point of view growing up there in the 70s and 80s, the town centre feels safer now than it did then.
Lived in Sheffield all 63 years of my life and have never been to those 3 places. Don’t think I’ll be going there soon either. The city isn’t what it used to be. My house is currently on the market and I’m hoping to move away. I go to the city centre once a year and that’s once too often for my liking. 😂
Every Sheffield person has been down Black Swan Walk once, thinking it would bring them out near the Crucible and left cursing when they realised they'd only gone and made their journey longer. (Unless they're looking for somewhere to get rekt on spice without being hassled, in which case they'll be a regular)
Black Swan Walk was full of shops at one time, the fronts was on your right as you walked down it. Now the shops are on the other side. And as said before there is the remains of a carriage turntable at the bottom.
I'll sleep much better tonight after finding out about these 3 new place. I'll be up on Saturdsy morning & off to town with 3 cans of lager, one to drink with the winos i see down on each of these secret places..
The tiled building on Lady's bridge is amazing and when you take a look at the roof the lead flashing and finnals are out standing. And under the bridge is a place called the Cathedral under ground water way. 👍
As a kid growing up in Sheffield during the early 80s we many times walked through that last one called Jew lane but never until now knew the name. I can imagine how it got that name too.
You just showed everyone where the drug addicts and homeless visit regularly.... most shops closed down.... You should have done a video of Sheffield councils delusions.
Black Swan Walk isn’t a secret it just doesn’t go anywhere, and it’s where the junkies used to hang out at night so most people were warned against going there. And Jew Lane was a common shortcut when I was a teenager, I wouldn’t go down there at night though for obvious reasons. The only ‘secret’ is the river walk, but that’s not so much a secret as just fairly new.
i know it's a year late, but why didn't you show the spider bridge? i'd say it's a lot more interesting than the walkway leading to the wicker, and it's not particularly known since it's so out the way for a pedestrian great vid though, been through the other 2 gennels mentioned on a walk at night and despite me never facing trouble, i'd never recommend it, too many shady characters
Most people from Sheffield know about these places where just not that stupid to walk down dead ends or sketchy looking back wacks because you're just asking to be mugged down them
Other than the Black Swan Walk off Fargate, the other two are empty, isolated, almost unused by most people and a complete waste of money. No wonder it is said about Castlegate that it is a secret place. No one goes there. Nothing to brag about.
46 years born and bred in Sheffield I’ve looked down this lane many times walking past, reminds me of shambles in York but a modern raped one also never did I know about that little snicket Jew lane 👍
Sheffied city council has made accessing the city center so difficult for the local population nobody can get into it anymore. As a consequence the lack of commerce has decimated the shops. Now there is no reason to go into the city centre even if you could get in there. That and the Clean Air Zone a.k.a. Clean Air Tax has destroyed our city centre. Shame on you Sheffield City Councel , shame on you!!!!

Take a look underneath, it's quite well hidden from the road view though. Take care. Love and peace.
