  • Our closing date came and went. Nine months pass by before we get the news that we are finally closing on our catamaran! See what our family is up to after we sold our family home and are in limbo waiting on the Moorings.

Yes, due to the prolonged time we could have probably gotten out of the contract but this also was the height of the catamaran market. Very little availability that was completely overpriced. I can look back now and laugh as the chaos known as purchasing this boat. Kinda like amnesia after you give birth😊

You guys are so patient. With all that money spent if they told me something like that I would have moved on or told them to move there asses or I am reducing my offer drastically. The owner would be faced with loosing a buyer and spending another year or more on the market having to reduce his price anyway or take it. You would have been surprised how fast you get moved to the front of the line when they (owner and broker) fear loosing a half million dollar deal. That boat.. any boat cost money every day to own and reduces in value at an equal rate.

Normally, yes. We would have walked away. However, nothing about 2021, 22 and 23 were normal. The first iteration of the Leopard 45 was due to be phased out of charter, we were coming off lockdown from Covid, and the catamaran market was booming. Cat buyers that had contracts on BRAND NEW boats were taking delivery and turning around and selling the boat they bought for $700k for over $1.2 million, and they were flying off the market at amazing speed. We wanted a charter cat so we could decide what to options to add instead of a prior owner making the call. Our boat was the last 45 that was available out of any of the moorings bases in the Caribbean for the year. The way the contract is written with them, the only way is cancel the contract. Then not only do you not have a boat, you have lost the time that you stopped looking for a boat. In the end, we finally get our boat and we have loved getting moving on our adventure! Thanks for following our journey!

I would have done told them to keep the boat. I don’t have that much patience and I don’t buy from people that I can’t trust.

Thanks for your comment. In Jan we definitely were at that point and that’s when work started moving. We were still within our hopeful timeframe or we would have bailed at that point.

Hi gang, new subscribers and we're enjoying following your travails. We've been thinking of getting a cat in the 45' range and are learning a lot from your experiences. Thanks for sharing. Of course, we need to get rid of our RV moneypit first. We can identify with a lot you're going through. Our motorhome was one of the top brands, and while it's been fun, it's also been a maintenance headache, as in every time I turn on the ignition, my first thought is "what will break today?" So Sarah thinks we should just stick to chartering boats. Two quick questions, non sailing related. In one episode we spotted some UGA attire and in this one, one of your boys has a Navy sweatshirt. I'm a Navy grad and Sarah is a UGA KD. Fly Navy, Go Dawgs.

Thanks for your comment! We totally understand the money pit! It’s a hard pill to swallow! My oldest is a huge UGA fan bc his dads family. Nobody attended just UGA fans. Our daughter Mckenna got a full Navy ROTC and Air Force scholarships. She was set on Navy until a few months back when she decided on Air Force, hence the Navy shirt. She just gave her brother all her UGA gear bc she would not be caught dead wearing that at Auburn. Thank you for your service! We are so excited to have you follow along!

So I see what is going on here. They Delayed you from getting the Boat so they could keep it in charter and make more money out if the Deal. And thin they tell you you could "A Discount" on the Boat if you wave the repairs and safety stuff. That is what they try to do every time.
You have to look at all the Wear and tear on the boat. It has ben what? 8,9 months?
If I was you I would get a New Survey Befor you close on the Boat.
You have No clue what has happened in all this time. The Boat could have ben run A ground, or hit the dock or another Boat. The Boats that are in charter are like rent a cars. It's all about the money and dump the Boat as fast as they can for the Next New Boat.
I hope you didn't fall for this trap.
Until next time, Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii!🌋🍹

The boat was pulled from charter prior to our first survey last August. We verified that it was on the hard from Aug until Mar of this year. We did have another survey and rigging inspection done 1 week prior to closing to verify. It's definitely been an eye opening experience. We hope that we can help others looking to purchase an ex-charter. In the end, we finally got our boat and are currently in Florida making upgrades. Thanks for your comment and watching!

There are so many reasons not to buy from a charter company, and this nonsense you've outlined has got to be close to the top. The idea that it takes almost a year to take possession of a used boat is just ridiculous. I think I would have negotiated to get the cost of repairs deducted and then find a boatyard and do it myself (or pay people to do the work), and if they were;t prepared to do that, I'd have walked away without a backward glance. To be honest, I wouldn't trust any repair these guys do anyway, so the boat would still need serious boatyard time to redo their work. And lets remember that these boats are made to survive their time in charter - thats what they're designed to do and nothing more. You buy an ex-charter boat (or a used boat that was built for the charter industry) and you have to accept that it is past its "sell-by date". So that means you need to do far more than a survey to understand the issues and to bring such a boat up to cruising spec - every system needs examining, every wire, through hole, steering etc and of course bulkheads, windows, gas lines - every o-ring, rubber pipe, skin fitting - survey or no, I wouldn't trust a damn thing until I've inspected myself.

Thank you for your feedback! We had the repairs done surveyed again prior to leaving. We tried to negotiate taking the boat as is and making our own repairs but the Moorings would not agree. Yes, it was a LONG wait, but in the end we finally got our boat. Now to start the blue water upgrades!

The deal just needs a lot of supervision and guidance. If your vigilant, it will all get done.
