I don't know if you've already done it, but you should seriously just release a full length album(s) of all the insanely great riffs and songs you write for your demonstrations.
I have a Single Rectifier Rectoverb 50 Series 2 combo and it's absolutely amazing...highly underrated amp, gets you that awesome Rectifier tone on more of a budget.
I'm not big on Mesa amps, especially the Rectifier series, but I will admit to liking the Single Rec. I have no idea why Mesa discontinued them besides the fact that they weren't selling as well. They have the tone everyone tries to get with the Dual Rec built in!
Everyone thought they needed 100w tube amps. So the Single wasn't popular at the time. Stoked I picked a Single Rectifier up 15 years ago, it's just amazing.
@@SonicDriveStudioafter 12 days now with my Series One Single. I love it so much, I am buying another one this coming weekend. My 15 year old daughter who is getting really good on guitar wanted one after playing mine.
My guitarist toured on one of these for all of the early 2000s and it was always so good. A little more mid bite than my dual rec. he still has it. An absolute beast.
Yeah, I bought and used a Triple Rec for a few years without hearing the single or even dual, because it was the BIGGESTEST! But after I sold it, had opportunity to play a single and did a bit of a facepalm bc it sounded so good. Had I heard that single rec at the time, I might still have it.
@@rmTheWalrus So true, everyone dogged the Single, because we all had to have 100 watt tube amps to play gigs at bars... Thankfully I bought a Single Rectifier 15 years back after working out we didn't need to BIGGESTEST haha
Jon, I have to say, you are one of the greatest gear channels and personalities that I've ever seen. You have a warm presence on camera, and your enthusiasm for the gear comes through very transparently. I have ADHD, and tend to swing between multiple hobbies very often, but you are one of the few people that will pull me back in with your videos when I'm in the middle of somewhat of a musical hiatus. Keep up the excellent work! 👏
I legit just bought one of these... more as an addition to the collection more than anything...But it really surprised me. Love it. Another great Mesa!
Single Rec is a beast! played a used one by chance at GC and plugging straight in it was so clear and tight compared to other rectos. Had I not gone away to college that fall I would’ve bought it. Plus it was pre inflation so it was only like 750 bucks.
Awesome video, helped me pull the trigger on a series II single. I’ve had mine for about 4 months now and found running JJ 6V6S tubes is the way to go. Typically power tubes don’t make a huge difference in sound but you honestly gotta hear it yourself to believe it. Improved every aspect of the amps tone over any 6L6 or EL34 tubes I’ve tried.
Love this amp…. I have many Orange, Marshall and Peavey heads. The Single Rec just has its own sound and it is superb. The distortion is dense and rich. I dial back the Treble control and use the Presence as my actual High Frequency control. I want swap in some Mesa EL34’s in place of the 6L6 power tubes to see how it sounds. I have the Version 2.
The Amp sounds very good, like all your gear. One thing I noticed was that the Amp never sounded like it was working hard or was having any trouble with what you were throwing at it. A real workhorse. Thanks for showing the knobs as you dialed in different tones. I find it fascinating to see and hear the immediate results.
There are not enough videos on this gem. My first amp and I went all around the world for tone just to come back to this amp, I am full circle in gear now. Make more videos for this amp! Make a video of the single rectifier and pepers dirty tree! I want to get one but I would want to hear the chugs cutting through the mix.
That tone at 9:50 sounds so much like Funeral for a Friend - Rookie of the Year. I love all these tones. That is a killer Recto!...and I would buy all of your music. Great compositions.
Jon, I've always been a Recto guy, and lately my mission has been to buy the earliest S/N of each model I can find (for a reasonable price), or the best example in the best condition... My current favorite is my 1992 Dual Rec Rev-F, my 1995 Dual Rec Rev-G, and my 1999 Triple Rec Rev-G. I just picked up a really early (pre-500) Single Rec that is set to arrive on Wednesday. I'm kind of excited. From what I can gather, the Series 1 Single Rec's have a very tight (almost boosted) sound, which is very similar to how a Rev-F Dual Rec sounds vs. a Rev-G Dual Rec. If you ever get a chance to own/play a Rev-F Dual Rec, do it... Mine is a very early 1992 (pre-1,200 S/N) so it still has the MK-III transformers in it. It's such a nasty and snarly beast, but still has that super heavy and huge headroom of the Duals. From your video, what I'm expecting the Series 1 Single Rec to sound like, is basically a Rev-F Dual without all that extra headroom. Which will be a cool sound for my collection. Also, the best boost pedal I've ran on my Rev-G's is my Pepper's Pedals Dirty Tree. The fact it's so adjustable means you can really dial it in.
Hey Jon, great video as always!! I’ve got the MKII version of this amp and really love it, highly under rated. Mine has had the effects loop modded and it works just fine with my pedalboard of effects, you might wanna research the mod, it’s pretty easy to do. I like boosting mine with Boss SD-1 and it’s knarly as hell!!🤘🏼
Jon this amp loves the presence cranked specially on vintage mode. You then just control the fizz with the treble. Also there's a magic sweet spot with the masters around noon (you'll know were it is because beyond a certain point the amp overloads and sounds bad) where the amp really comes alive you then attenuate with the output knob.
try the other way around too. i run my output at noon and attenuate with individual channel masters. i've had singles for around 16 years and still run one.
It took me a little while to figure out just how important the presence control is on pretty much every mesa amp, recto included!! Once you find the sweet spot you'll be grinning from ear to ear, there revered for a reason😁
A Rectifier is still on my wish list of guitar amps, and I think you just made a good case for this one. I was fond of the Vintage/Modern/Ch Clone capabilities of the original 2ch Duals, and had (mistakenly) thought something would be lost with having both of the “crush modes” on the same channel, but you brought out some sounds with the “Pushed” mode I didn’t think the Single Recto could do. Tbh, I like a layered guitar tone and use a volume pedal to clean up, and really don’t do a lot of channel switching once I get a distortion tone I like, so I guess my whole misguided prejudice against this amp kind of falls down. This thing sounds killer, right and tight in a way lost on a lot of larger heads. Thanks for opening my eyes on this gem! Great sound and riffs as always!
We had one of these at the Guitar Center I used to work at. The Triple Rec was everybody's darling at that time (early 00's), but this was my favorite amp of the Rectifier series.
Had one of these for years and it was one of my favorite amps. Even at 50w, never had to turn the volume up much past 9 o'clock at shows. One of my biggest regrets from selling a piece of gear, but now have the 25w mini recto that fills that gap as close as possible.
At first I hated the FX Loop on my Rectifier because I didn't understand how it works and in which case to use it. It's a parallel loop instead of the usual serial loop. That means that whatever you do with it, you always have a version of your sound untouched by the effects you run through the loop. The effect pedals you're using need to be able to be set to 100% wet, otherwise you'll overload the signal chain and you'll hear some weird thumping sound. I use it with a pitch shifter set to 100% wet with a up 7th for my lead and a bit of delay. It keeps my orignal signal but blends in the effect. It sounds pristine.
Great video! I've got a very eary one and absolutely love it! Will never part with it. Plenty of power. Plenty of gain. I did the FX loop mod, where the knob is bypassed and it is 100% wet. Thanks for the content!🤘
It is a wonderful amplifier! I don't understand why they underrated him. I had the Dual Multiwatt for about 10 years and recently have a single rect-o-verb and it is awesome! There's nothing about it that makes me want the Multiwatt. The single rectifiers have just what is necessary to do it all!
What you mentioned about the treble and presence controls reminded me of my Rev G dual rec, i leave the presence wide open and it doesnt get too harsh, but it makes the treble control much more effective
Thanks for the in-depth! Just picked one up too. The tone controls on the clean channel don't seem to do that much, particularly the mid. Noticed the same on your, just watching back. Modern with a boost though indeed has 'that sound'.
I had a mate who swore by these things and wouldn't use anything else. I went to see him live a bunch of times and he's not wrong. Best sounding Recto ever made.
I wanted to sell my Single Rectifier, no need for such a beast as I'm not gigging anymore. So I listen to a bunch of amps, decided on what I wanted next (Orange OR15)... then saw this video, and now I know I won't be happy. The Single Rectifier just sounds so good. Damn it.
This is my favorite amp! I've owned my Single Rec V1 for about 12 years now and absolutely love every aspect of it! I don't gig with it any more because of how hard it would be to replace 😬 Still use it for recording though!
I have a single recto rev 2 and a two channel triple rec from 1999. They absolutely sound different. The single is a little leaner and meaner. The triple has more clarity and more authority. I have found I prefer 6l6s in the triple and I run el34s in the single which also gives them a different character. I feel like I can run the gain a little higher on the single and the gain structure is a little more aggressive and gnarly but in a good way. They are still both rectos and have the sound associated with those amps but are voiced slightly different. I use a gridslammer overdrive or an sd1 to tighten them up a little and dial out some of the looseness but both are monsters when you get that eq dialed in and shape it a little more with the overdrive. I don’t know if you have played a lot of mark series amps but I highly recommend them as well for tighter and more percussive punch. They are more focused and don’t have the same “sub” low end that makes rectos sound so massive but mark amps are killer for some of those old school metal tones like 80s Metallica and Dream Theater that you mentioned. Very different from rectos and also amazing amps especially the JP2C. If you like Master of Puppets the JP will get you in that tonal spectrum by just plugging straight into it. I never had an original IIC+ but I did own a blue stripe Mk III back in the day and currently have a mk v and JP2C. They are all great amps in my opinion. Anyway sorry for the long post - great video and awesome tones and playing.
I’ve had my single rec since ‘95, I’ve had so many other amps come and go but this is the one I always go back to. I’m amazed Mesa haven’t reissued it. I had a 3 channel dual rec for a while and it sounded nowhere near as good so I sold it. The only issue was the fx loop but I had the simple mod done and it’s awesome now.
Great video! I usually run mine on vintage, boosted with am mxr m77, but on modern i don't. Try it with a P90! My favorite guitar has sd phat cats and grab it more than anything (have an epiphone lee malia rd, slasher with stock pu's for now, but have some p-rails i'm really excited for...phoenix 7 bm, and an ibanez ftm33...i feel we have similar tastes when it comes to instruments lol) anyway. Loved the vid! Can't wait for the comparison video!
Great amp and great demo. I have the Single Rectifier Rect-O-Verb 50 rev 1. (same as this one just with reverb). As you mention - the parallel loop is difficult. You have to use a pedal with kill dry- and only one pedal/effect machine in the loop. I am using a H9 in kill dry mode in the loop and that works great. Have just tracked a few songs with it. It works great in a mix.
I've owned 3 mesas and am in the 'hate them camp' lol. Love your channel though... keep it up!! They all give me 'ear fatigue' and after 15 minutes or so just i want to turn it down, unlike my Marshalls, Friedmans, or Engl amp...? After 15 minutes with those I just want to turn it up!!
I own this amp, the 1st version Single Rectoverb head and 2nd version Rectoverb combo with the Raw mode....amazing amp model ....my Dual Multi Watt on 50w is also amazing , a bit more grunt than these Single Recto's
Great review & riffing! I've been thinking of selling my Solo Rectifier/1x12 Mesa cab to downsize to an EVH Iconic 40W...but maybe I'll keep my Boogie, maybe an A/B test will tell me. Curious as to why you're adding impulse responses to these demos, doesn't that colour the sound of the actual amp we're trying to hear?
vraiment une super vidéo, tu as su bien mettre en valeur, ce rectifier, vivement la prochaine vidéo comparative. Tu connais la période de fabrication des séries 1 solo head ?
Great production and riffs man. Quick request. When you do the mini rectifier vs single rectifier. Can you share your opinion on which one to buy according to your needs (not sound). In terms of money, space, maintenance, fx loop problem, home recording vs gigs, etc. Thanks. Amazing work you are putting out there
Killer video! It definitely has that old school metal tone. I happen to prefer the dual rectifier multi-watt to the rest. It has the sweetest midrange. The triple is a bit much and the solo is a bit too little. I could definitely be fine playing any of three but the dual is the Goldie locks amp for me.
I love your video! I had a V1 20 years ago and I sold it... Bad idea! After your video, I absolutely wanted to find a V1 like yours. I found one in... the Netherlands! Thanks for your job, it made me want to play stoner rock and metal again. What wah wah pedal do you use at 13.34?
I think the best Mesa/BoOgie I’ve ever played was a 50 watt rectifier head. I don’t remember if it was called a single rectifier or rectoverb or what but that thing was out of this world. Sucks I don’t see them on their site anymore
Sounds killer! Great video! Just curious what this sounds like live in the mix. It’d be nice to hear and see it in a live context, and how your settings differ from recording and playing live.
Have you had a chance to try the Mesa Badlander 100 50 or 25 watt heads? I would love to hear a demo of one of those from you. Single rec sounds pretty sick. Awesome Demo!
There any tonality differences between Single Rectifier vs. Rectoverb 50 besides added reverb?? Don’t know which one to get. I’m looking for Cannibal Corpse tone at low volumes.
Damn bro, this thing sounds legit! What do you think?

I had a 3 channel dual rec for a while and it sounded nowhere near as good so I sold it. The only issue was the fx loop but I had the simple mod done and it’s awesome now.
I do also love my Dual Rectifier but it's definitely more loose and fuzzy.
@@SonicDriveStudio the real difference is in a live band situation - the dual rec gets lost in the mix, the single just cuts through
Geez Louise this thing sounds monstrous!
Sure does!
Almost bought this amp because of this video, but I'm going to have some self control. Amazing Het style riffs though my guy \m/
I had one of those a few years ago. I am definitely not a Mesa rectifier guy but I did like this one.
Convert that fx loop. It’s super easy and then you’ll need nothing special to use all your pedals
@@RavageRitual1986Yeah - I have thought about doing that. Maybe will do. On the other hand I am mostly only using a boost in front and a delay :-)
That EC401B is freakin sick AF dude!!
Love it!
John, great presentation. What about single rectifier rectoverb 50W. It would be perfect to compare both devices 😍
Next amp demo, do the ENGL Artist Edition or maybe even an Artist Edition vs Fireball 100 🙌
Cheers! Not sure I understand 100% but mine is an early one, number 248 iirc
Nice work and play through. Any recommendations on 6L6 power tube replacements? Brand, etc?
Sounds amazing! But I would like see a triple crown comparison, to see the differences😮
Single rectifiers are massive gain amps. I have a rectoverb that is a monster!
the single rec has always been the best sounding rectifier because there's way less stuff going on it. it has better transient fidelity.
I've owned a dual, triple, single...
And the single was the best sounding
Best Mesa I have ever owned also. I have with three of them one being the Rectoverb 50.
Insane riffs!
Thanks!
Have you had a chance to try the Mesa Badlander 100 50 or 25 watt heads? I would love to hear a demo of one of those from you. Single rec sounds pretty sick. Awesome Demo!
Thanks! I have not tried a Badlander unfortunately
There any tonality differences between Single Rectifier vs. Rectoverb 50 besides added reverb?? Don’t know which one to get.
I’m looking for Cannibal Corpse tone at low volumes.
Men this amp sound amazing omg i thinks it my pref of all!!🤘
what is the tuning you are using on the part with with the gibson les paul custom ebony :) its sound amazing with that rectifier !
Sounds Really Good!
I bought a used one and almost sold it. Then I replaced all the tubes. Best decision I ever made, sounds better than it ever did now.
Great sounding amp, but I want that guitar! The Iron Cross baby!!!
i dont boost my rev G and love it, this thing sounds great =)
An older 2 channel Recto is still on my wish list! :)
@@SonicDriveStudio Try it. I have a Rev F and it's something special IMHO. The single rec sounds thin in comparison.
@@SonicDriveStudioisn’t this one older already? It’s two channels after all, most modern Rectifiers have three.
Correcting myself: the modern Single Rectifier is two channel only, nevermind.
Glad you mentioned the Metallica thing because i used to own one of these and everybody in the band said i kept writing metallica riffs every week ha
Haha can't help it!
Remember the Randall rm50 / rm100 with dual recto module and fender black module
Vet video! de oude amp van Patrick 😊. Als je een keertje een Diezel Herbert MK1 wil testen, je mag hem van mij lenen.
