How I make a basic - True High Pressure Aeroponic "Small" DIY Root Chamber

- So this is a simpler version of how I build a very basic True High Pressure Aeroponic root chamber. This video focuses on the root chamber, using a 27 gallon storage tote. People use these totes commonly as they are cheap and easy to make. Don’t expect huge plants, but I use a SCROG net to help support the plants making them grow larger. I actually give away some tips and tricks never shown before, now that more people are following Aeroponic Growers I felt like giving some good tricks on building aeroponic True HPA systems. Great video man, thanks! How many misters could you run on that line while keeping the pressure in you 80-100 range?
It depends on how you setup your system. With a 4 gallon accumulator tank and 4 misters per container you can easily do 3 root chambers. If I’m running a longer line, I usually add a smaller pre-pressurized accumulator tank towards the end. The two tanks will work together to keep a more consistent pressure. As with everything you will get the best results by testing and trying different setups. Have fun!

Just go with an Aquatec 8800 series pump with the 90/110 pressure switch. The common higher pressure switch commonly offered is 80/100 which is still good but I like the extra pressure. If you want really cheap but loud diaphragm pumps they work as well.

Love your videos...I am wondering about your drain. Are you pumping the drained water back into the reservoir? I am confused because if, for example your drain is 10 inches above ground, to drain with gravity, you would have to have the water level in the reservoir lower than the drain.
I mainly due drain to waste. It takes a couple days for the liquid to build up and then I just drain it out. In the beginning when your making the clones and first roots, you can use the bottom of the grow chamber as the reservoir. Have the drain tubing go to the input side of the pump. Some of my other videos I show how I put valves inline to suck out nutrient’s and put them in reservoirs etc. Whatever level of water you have in one container will equal the same height in the other container if there are no valves holding the water. If my container is 10 inches above ground I can only drain around 9 inches into a reservoir. Learn drain to waste so that you’re keeping everything going one direction and sterile. You want your roots to be like a sponge full of water if you squeezed them but not dripping wet. I get roots growing on the lid and sides, they will find the water. When people leave to much water on the bottom the roots shoot down and become hydroponic roots. You want really bushy root balls.

Do you use this system much? Does the drain system work well? I've been racking my brain on how to setup my recirc setup, and debating vs pump like this or gravity with 4 inch bulkheads. Does the 1/4 clog with roots?
This is a good system for growing 4-6 plants about 2-3 feet high. I don’t use this system anymore unless I’m making it for clones. I find the bigger 64 gallon commander totes with the hip roof the best. I don’t do aeroponics in small tents anymore because controlling temps is too much of an issue. I do drain to waste, so my roots are stuck to the lid of the container and around misters by the end. The 1/4” will clog. I’ve used screens before to hold roots off the bottom of a container.

You can buy the boxes at a local hardware store. Or look online for 27 gallon totes. The misters I assemble myself. 1/4” tubing and push fit tee’s. 1/8” female tee fitting. You can buy assembled mister tee’s. 12 or 24 watt pump with 110-160 psi bypass. We don’t go by horse power on these small pumps. The larger ones for much larger systems start at a 1/2 hp.
Wish I knew where you sourced your nozzles and fittings and all that.
I use TEFEN nozzles and get reverse osmosis fittings off Amazon.

New here. When using an hpa aeroponics system, how much water will it return to the reservoir? If slow and little, how much and how many times a day do you need to add the water solution? TYA
It depends on if you build your system to “drain to waste” in which you only use the nutrient water once and discard the left overs. Or in a continuous loop then you will get back everything the plants don’t use.
Where did you find your 100 psi pressure switch? I am having a tough time finding any above 80 psi, let alone an Aquatec brand one. Thanks!
They are hard to find. Part # PS100 “I think” we get them directly from Aquatec.
I use to use a Square D water pump switch with a quick fit adapter to the 1/8th female thread.
what nozzles did you use and where did you get them?
I’m using a “fine spray” nozzle and that’s about as much information I got on them. Look into some of my other videos where I test different nozzles. A very similar nozzle to what I’m using are the black “TEFEN” nozzles easily found on good old Amazon.
hey boss where are you getting these quick connect pieces and tees. Especially the check valve. I have had to go so overkill on my own set up due my local stores not having anything. Im using a mix of pex plastic and the alloy stuff they have but its horrible. I checked youre website but I cant find anything there.
Hey sorry to hear about the headache “been there with pex” so “reverse osmosis or quick fit or push fit” fittings are what I’m using. To keep things simple order all “1/4 inch OD” fittings. They sell bags full of fittings on Amazon for cheap. The check valves have pink on them and come in the bags. Malida makes a lot of the cheap fittings you need. Once you have your system on quick fits with 1/4 inch OD you won’t get pipes expanding and weird leaks popping up constantly. You can also use 3/8th OD “outer diameter” fittings and tubing also. If you use both sizes, go from big to small. If you start with 3/8th OD, finish with 1/4” OD. Don’t use the white reverse osmosis tubing which is common, use darker color tubing. If you are only buying local ask around for reverse osmosis fittings, stores that sell equipment for commercial coffee makers etc., food stands etc all use reverse osmosis fittings. Check aquarium stores, pool stores and plumbing stores. Sorry we stopped selling the parts, Amazon destroyed us...

Make another video focus on the drainage I don’t understand how it works with air and liquid on the drainage hole
This video is just how I build the chamber. You can have it drain from the bottom or the side. You’re right you want to have liquid on top of either fitting before you draw from it if you’re recirculating it. I mainly do drain to waste. I only spray a small amount of liquid with little left over each day.
Where did you get that box that you have the pump mounted in?
I make them and hopefully get back to selling them as I rebuild the company during this pandemic.

Do you still use the same model today or do you now use something else?
Go with TEFEN nozzles. It’s an old design so nobody owns a patent on it and every mister company makes them. The TEFEN nozzles are good because they don’t drip.
Not sure how safe those containers are for food ?

They aren’t made of food safe plastic, on the flip side drinking nutrients isn’t healthy either!
Hey man do u really need the tank im not using 1 with the manifold i bort off ebay but the pumps a cheap 1 and its way too noisy.
Are the pumps with the metal bottom more quiet this cheapo is plastic
Without the tank the pump has to turn on every couple minutes when the manifold opens. The pressure isn’t steady because it’s building up each cycle rather than being stored under pressure in a tank. The cheap pumps are just noisy as hell either way. Get an Aquatec 8800 pump or Shurflo those are super quiet!

Hey there, if you want to recover the excess water from the mist, how do you build the system back into the tank? Would Air be a problem? If so, how do you prevent it from entering your system? Thx
I use a “bulkhead” on the bottom of the container with the container lifted so the water will drain. Or on the side and have it lifted in the back so the water flows to it. You can get creative with how you want that water to go back into your system. You won’t get air in the system unless the pump has a chance to suck it in. Watch my other videos for ideas. I use the same pump to suck out the water in the system and return it to the reservoir, you just need to set up valves to open and shut different sections so air doesn’t get it. It’s a really big question with a lot of different answers!

You can use gorilla duct tape to light proof your lid and only put it on the top nothing inside no risk

I put a quick connect/push fit elbow, male to female. 3/4 inch ID
Which accumulator tank did you use?
The tanks I use come from the manufacture. Many companies put their own label over it. The 4 gallon accumulator tanks which actually hold a little over 3 gallons are the most common and affordable. I try to find tanks with a working pressure over 100 psi but if I’m running a 80/100 psi system the 100 psi tanks work. I get Aquatrol tanks.

How many tubs can you do on a tank?
A common 4 gallon accumulator tank can do a couple grow chambers. Essentially it could do more. It depends on how many times you want your pump to cycle, how quickly you are emptying the tank and what fits best for your system. Some people may use a 2 gallon tank because they don’t have a large throughput, some may not have the space, some want to fill a big tank and have more time between making nutrients etc.

I’m using polypropylene plastic misters. They are such an old design that every manufacturer has them now. Look for TEFEN nozzles 1/8th female thread.

@@S43MY the pvc pipe will swell with each burst of liquid and then the misters continue spraying after the solenoid turns off.
@@S43MY there’s a big difference in the these sprayers and garden sprayers. If you have seen misters spraying produce in a grocery store then you are looking at these kind of misters.

If you have the room we have used garbage cans in the beginning NASA experiments growing corn. The larger the container the better and height being the most important. A minimum 19” inches of depth in a container seems to work best. I’ve done it in 5 gallon buckets, but the room for error greatly diminishes with a smaller container. If you have the height, garbage cans are great!
What kind of misters are those
They are a very old design so any nozzle manufacturer makes them now. TEFEN are good, these I get by the thousands from China, well use to.
The roots will clog that drain.
By time the roots are that big the throughput is so low there is little to no runoff. If the roots become hydroponic roots they will most definitely get in there. And even then a screen will work. More importantly though I wouldn’t use this size root chamber for more than experimenting or cloning.

@@bigraver1661 so the most affordable and readily available container that we use is simply the 65 gallon commander totes from Lowe’s with wheels. They are around $36 bucks each and now are available on Amazon which is amazing considering their size and free shipping. You will need to have a proper netting system above to hold the massive colas. The weight pushes the center of the container top down a bit. Go through my videos and website and the biggest container with reflectix bubble wrap you see growing the most plants are the 65 gallon totes. The hip roof is what makes it great and I stick a rubber seal around the top of my spray is causing a leak. Get them off the ground for easy draining and so air can circulate around them. We do 8 plants per container, bend them over into a SCROG net then a second net to hold the flowers. Now the net cup is pinching the stem and the SCROG net is holding the weight of the plant. The plant doesn’t need to focus on growing a large root system or stalk to support the plant. Now it puts more energy into the flowers. Watch my first few videos and you will see the larger container. Have fun!!
