I know people keep telling you to adjust with a warm barrel. That’s fine and true on a target rifle. Not on a hunting rifle. You need to know where it’s going to hit cold. Since you don’t get the option to warm up the barrel when your hunting. If you do you probably will come home empty handed. Keep doing it the way you always have.

Wanted to say thanks for featuring the .35 Whelen. It’ll take just about any animal in North America. It was one of Elmer Kieth’s favorites. Just a note, most shooters and hunters out west here would normally opt for the 200 yard. “0”. A 270, 30/06, 280 Rem. or even a 7mm mag. would only be 1/2 to 2 inches high at a hundred, dead on at 200, and only 6 to 7 inches low at 300. This will give a practically point blank range trajectory for anything within that distance. Thanks again for your great videos. God bless, Ken

They asked Elmer Keith why he shot such large-caliber rifles. Keep in mind much of Elmer's hunting was in heavy timber in northern Idaho and the Bob Marshall Wilderness of Montana. His crude yet simple reply: "They bleed better with two holes."

I've a Remington 35 wheelen and I handload for it. Rooster is correct, if I load it to max pressure with a barns xxx 285grain it will leave me blue from my neck to my ribs. Ive used it on hogs in Warrington GA. My load on 14 hogs so far is DRT . Not one has moved further than 20 yards from point of impact. Most just dropped right there.
35 can be handloaded with 180grain .357 caliber pistol rounds for light work and ease of recoil. I've hunted them on squirrel, racoon, opossum, for camp meat. I carry one magazine with 357 copper jacketed hollowpoint, one magazine with Remington 250 grain led nose and one magazine in the rifle of my handloads for hunting.
The rifle is accurate and nostalgic wouldn't trade it for love nor money.

I have the same setup and love it. Used it this past season for my MS primitive weapon/woods rifle. I decided on an 80 yard zero for the average distances i knew I'd be shooting in some hardwood treetops and a couple plots I'd been watching. It proved flat and effective for 180gr Barnes TTSX. The ttsx shreds. Took down 5 deer every one a heart shot dropped on the spot. The ttsx makes a massive wound channel.

I have wanted a 35 Whelan for years. Finally pulled the trigger on a 2016 limited edition Remington Model 700 CDLSF when it came out in 2016. It groups all of the ammo I have for it well. The 250 gr Remington Core Lokt Express are loaded very conservative. They seem similar to my 700 ADL 30/06 shooting 180's. The Buffalo Bore 225 gr Sierra Game Kings @2800 are a completely different animal. Comes off the sandbags on the bench. More recoil than my Win Mod 70 300 Win shooting 180's. I would say Its similar to a 338 Win Mag being it slings 225's at the same velocity. It's a very underrated cartridge no doubt.

Hornady Superformance is outrageous. My 22" Handi-Rifle clocks just under the rated 2900 fps, 200 gr SST, bores 3/8" holes in 3/8" thick target steel. Both Hornady and Federal Fusion are cheaper than Remington ammo.

Thanks for the review. After watching I ordered the CVA 35 Whelen just like yours from Midway.
I will be putting my Leopold VX2 3x9 CDS on it. I have 2 boxes of the 200 grain Hornady Superperformance so I should be good for this deer season. But I have some 35 Whelen dies and a ton of 30-06 brass along with a Lyman 3589 mold which drops a 280 grain bullet and a Lyman 358156 which drops a 150 grain bullet. Should be able to do a lot of shooting this summer without using up the hard to find ammo.

Hey WTW, have you tried a 2 shot sight-in ? Take your initial initial shot on paper (like you did), then put the cross hairs back in the bulls eye, hold the rifle still, look through the scope & adjust the cross hairs to the bullet hole. Move the rifle back to the bulls eye & fire a 2nd shot. You should now be right on the bulls eye.

I already bought the 45-70 and 44 Mag after watching your videos, was intrigued enough on the 35 Whelen..I bought one ( Its still in jail until next week ) , and was mandatory to get reloading equip for it...to shoot cheaper and hot rod this baby up. Found PRIMED 35 Whelen brass cheaper than unprimed, grabbed a 3 die set from Redding...already had shellholder/powder...grabbed Hornady FTX 200's and Speer HotCore 250's ( Everybody said that was THE 35 Whelen bullet ) ...will have it all loaded up by the time I get her out of FFL jail 😄 Debating what cartridge I get next in one of these Scouts...love em.

That CDS system works fairly well. I have a handful of them. I have that exact scope on one of my 270’s. It works perfectly out to 550yards and back.

You may need it for black bear soon the way they are wandering thru downtown areas in TN lately. Even had couple go to college at ETSU for short visits. Glad to see some of older calibers back. Thanks

Love the Leupold CDS system. I have a couple of them. All you have to do is send them the ballistic info on your bullet choice, and they will send you a custom dial. You can order extras if you want to have custom dials for different loadings.

    • @ValcoBayrunner
      @ValcoBayrunner 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Thats true, the way he explained it isnt exactly right. It depends on calibre, velocity and bullet coefficient. Each dial per calibre is different. I wish I could order one now, but nobody has it in stock. I plan on ordering the Scout V2 pistol in 6.5 Grendal, it would be a fun gun.

Who-TEE-Who you just got a quality gun with a real good recoil pad cause I bet that 35 Whalen is a thumper!! I have a stalker chambered in 30-06 and that recoil pad makes it feel like shooting a 410 . I use mine deer hunting in rainy conditions. I have a CVA muzzleloader and when I saw that single shot rifle and the way it feels substantial in your hands I had to have it!!! It seems like every time I l’m looking for a good interesting video you pop up. I appreciate your work on your videos keep up the good work!!

That's the great thing about a single shot accuracy. You don't have to worry about the lugs and boltface on a bolt action.

Thats the one I was waiting to see!! Not bad recoil? Everybody says its a bruiser. Bet it does the job. I like the ambi cheek rest on the butt stock. Again cool rig, like the scope. Seems like a neat caliber. I will take your word on that. Yeah, love to see ya whitetail with that! 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸

    I use to have a CZ24 mauser rechambered to 8mm-06. Close to 35 ...
Used .323 196gr bullets also. I used the 185gr Remingtons for the 8mm rem mag...thing hit like 10 freight trains... Sadly i traded it away 😭 but i i do make some thumpers for 30-06 in 220gr. Love handloading.. Its a great hobby/ pastime

A factory muzzlebreak is going to take out a lot of recoil. That fps reminds me of my .444 Superformance 265 grain at 2400 fps.

  • @rdaugherty52

Hoo_Tee don't you know you adjust the scope over to the bullet hole. I packaged up some wheel weights and stuffed them in the stock went from 7lbs to 9lbs a little heavy but tamed the recoil way down. I mostly shoot off a bench anyway. My son's name was Waylon and I pronounce Whelen with the e instead of the a. Anyway super duper glad your showing the Whelen. By the way it was designed for shooting big cats. Phs were having trouble with the big dangerous game cartridges passing through the cats and not doing much damage. Some tried the 30 06 and got ripped apart. Colonel Whelen wanted something better than the 30 06 .

I bought the exact gun late last year in 35 Whelen. Almost the same setup. I recently just zeroed it in. Didnt even bore sight, just eyeballed it. 1st shot was about 5" low and 1" right. Two more adjustments and the 3rd and 4th was in a 1" orange dot. Nice factory trigger on this gun. I'm shooting 200 grain Remington ammo, because like you, that was all I could pickup at the time. I do like Remington ammo. Killed piles of deer with Remington 180s in my 30-06. I hope I get to try this out on a good buck this year. Hope to see you hunt with yours this year. I would like to know what my Remington 200g would do through the chrono. Good Luck.

UPDATE I killed a nice 9 first morning in the woods with my Scout. 200 grain factory remingtons. Shot low through one shoulder. Exit behind the other shoulder. He did make it about 20 yards before taking a dirt nap. Pretty impressed when I skinned him. I would like to try it on a couple more. See if I can get the Bang Flop. LOL

Is The CVA better than an Encore ?
I have a Contender handgun and it definitely needed a trigger job and the barrel interchangability feature took a lot of tinkering to make it happen.
But I'd like to get a bigger break action rifle

  • @umami0247

Just like a Thompson center encore. Which is my favorite rifle for a single shot. However since they sold to Smith and Wesson they don't offer as many barrels which is a shame. I may pick up one of these. The muzzle break helps Immensely.

Hand load for your Whelen. 30-06 brass is cheap and easy to find. My father and I both hunted here in Alaska for over 50 years with one. Even the biggest bears fell to the Whelen and most were one shot kills. Always used 250 grain Horniday spire points and never had a failure. I think some of the new premium bullets might work even better. I have a number of more powerful rifles but in the end the old Whelen is what always seems to go hunting.

You can form .35 wheelen for '06 brass? Guess I never thought about it. Main reason I never considered one. Expensive brass.
