Congrats Sony. One thing we need to realize with the advent of more mirrorless solutions, it also means that the robustness of previous gear will need to be compromised due to weight. With Sony's lighter weight, smaller bodies the lens will need to reflect that with a more plastic feeling. I however love robust lenses. Love Zeiss and Voigtlanders especially. The only way I see rugged lenses continue, but lighter weight materials outside of metal bodies, is the use of Carbon Fiber. However cost would be prohibitive.
Nice review again. Just one clarification, you wondered how Sony managed to add so much hardware whilst reducing the size and weight. Obviously it's a great engineering feat, but Sony has been saying on their slides of the XD linear motors that they not only make AF much faster and silent, but they also allow a size reduction.
I played it in one of the HK showrooms with an A7IV (was a surprise as a demo unit already in after one day of official announcement) and felt the outer barrel material is more plasticky? Something gonna give for nearly 200g off v1. AF speed is crazy. Bokeh seems nicer. I am checking out the JPG now as I forgot to change it to RAW when I play tested it at Sony HK showroom.
I've seen some subpar bokeh samples from this lens. By that I mean that circular highlights (bokeh balls) have pronounced onion ring shapes inside. Has that been your experience? Would it be possible to see some hi-res samples of the bokeh?
I did a comparison with this and a bunch of other 24-70ish lenses: th-cam.com/video/PDmauI-IBVQ/w-d-xo.html I can confirm that even the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 for $800 looked better with bokeh. So even though I don't think the 24-70 has issues (onion rings were not very pronounced to me), it's definitely not the strength for this lens
@@learningcameras Granted, it was just one sample photo. The price is insane for the 10-15% improvement over the 3rd Party competition. Also, granted, it's that way with most products. You pay a huge premium for something just a few degrees better.
nice tuto. I would be interested by tutorials on a7m4 settings (shown on ninja,...), BTS, using AF (not only eyes but cars, people,...), HD vs s-log, slow motion,...
I think there is in HK . But a new v1 dropped heavily in price already. So trade-in price will be ridiculously low. I walk-in one of the HK showrooms today and the pre-order of 100+ units was nearly all gone in less than 1 day (started yesterday)!
@@wingcreator The market value will be the same here in the PH, but I won't suspect a heavy price drop here as Sony system is the most in demand here from what i'm seeing.
If price is the main factor ABSOLUTELY get the Tamron 28-75mm. It's amazing for the price...I personally own it, and I highly recommend it. This new Sony lens would be considered an upgrade and you have to decide if the extra price is worth it for you. But everyone should start with that Tamron. I have a review on that coming up! Been using the new one for the past couple months
Build quality on the Sony is still great...all metal although the lighter construction means it feels less bullet proof. But most of the weight savings are because of them rearranging the elements and the new linear AF system
@@learningcameras I just bought the 24-70gm ii, it certainly doesn't feel like metal, like a hard plastic, quite disappointed for the price. Maybe polycarbonate?
Not much better. Marginally better quality enough to be on par with the best (but smaller with more features) but probably won't blow away the best other lenses with sharpness
I think Sigma is still the one to get in this category unless you’re primarily a videographer for the aperture ring and adjustable zoom dial, or if money is no object.
Dude, it's my wife and she literally wanted me to post that... In fact she shared the screenshot on her IG. We're having a baby next month and just joking around about it
I would really like your opinion on this lens vs. the Tamron 35-150. Especially with the Tamron being slightly cheaper abd faster.
Sony is winning the 24 - 200mm zoom market.
Bravo!!!!
Agreed
Personally, I feel like the 70-200mm is a more impressive lens, Sony 24-70 is pretty good though
Also the 12-24mm zoom market.
And also the 200-600 zoom market.
@@youuuuuuuuuuutube 12-24 for sure. Maybe not the 200-600mm range though
@@KOKOBC Nikon conquered the 400-800 pro range. Those 400 2.8 + TC and 800mm 6.5 is enough to get someone buy into the nikon system.
Quality wise I couldn’t tell a huge difference. Weight wise that’s a huge selling point.
Oh holy hell! Congrats on the new one guys!
Hahaha...appreciate that!
Thank You for the gimbal example that helps a lot. Sick video and shots as well
Thanks William! Means a lot
Sick footage! Thank you all. And congrats on the baby she looks gorgeous💯👍

What is Bo-kuh?
Thanks for the video. I’m shooting FX3 with the old GM and I’m so tempted by this.
Please mr Dan Watson we need comparison between canon RF 24-70 vs Sony 24-70 f2.8

Yessss! Such a fun lens ❤️
What gimbal you use? If this works with this it will work with 16-35 gm
Everything was shot with this gimbal: bhpho.to/3pUpnFw and absolutely it works perfectly with the 16-35 as well
I wish there were trade-in options for Gen 1 users. I need this so I can take an additional weight off perfect for travel

what is the camera u using in the video?
How luts ?
Hi Dan, what is the background Music during the first part please. I‘ve searched soundstripe with no result. Thx
What drone did you use to carry a Sony camera with the 24-70 F2.8 GM II? Looking for a rig like that.
So we actually had the Sony Airpeak but it didn't work well with this lens (a bit heavy) so that drone shot ended up just being the Mavic 3 lol
Первая песня как называется???
Would like to see this lens against the 35-150!!
Sir pls tell me function of iris switch of this lens
I have this and tamron 50-400 and I’m all set in zoom lenses.
Video Blogger,00:16~00:48,What is the background music ? Thank you!
24-70 F2.8 GM ii what is Lens Filter Thread size ??
82mm
Why not to have Tamron 28-75 2.8 G2 + 17-28 2.8 for the same money? Price for me is the main stop factor.

Is this video done for paid promotion?
Nope. Sony didn't sponsor this video at all and I purchased the lens myself
@@learningcameras Great review! I'm convinced this is the lens I need for my a7iv! Keep up the good work!

Not on telegram, never used it.
Apparently at 50mm it sucks except that in the center...have you tried that?
to be honest, the old 24-70GM was a really weak lens. Even the 24-105G is much sharper. I hope the new version is much better.

Once again, highlights performed badly on videos. Sony camera is still very weak at this after so many generations. I'm really surprise.
