Another beautifully clear, friendly and honest review. Always a pleasure to watch and listen. There's even a certain soothing quality to the calm and friendly way you present these videos that makes me watch them as bedtime "reading".
I own the Sigma since last summer, used it for a wedding and lots of street photography. Except for some minor sharpness issues in the most extreme regimes wide open I love everything about it. It's fast and beautiful for a very reasonable price.

Thanks Gerald for your honest, no nonsense review! I had the original 24-70, and didn't find it to be that bad...although its images were clinical to my eyes. Having the Tamron 35-150 now, I'll never go back to a 24-70. While I do miss having a wider focal with the zoom, the Sony 20mm G compliments very nicely. (So the extra weight of the Tamron is offset in my bag.)

Great review straight to the point. I upgraded from the sigma 24-70 2.8 to the new sony 24-70 2.8 gm ii primarily due to a few reasons: AF consistency/accuracy/speed, weight, corner sharpness, weather sealing (I didnt have dust issues with the sigma) and overall controls and package. No it's not really worth twice the price of the sigma but the overall package you get with the new sony is pretty nice. I'd say the sigma might be a bit less prone to flare shooting into the sun but the sony does a great job as well. The price of the sigma is so compelling that I might actually buy another one as I really loved the rendering of that lens even though I have the new GM II. Also I will say the new GM II lens has better micro contrast than the sigma but I'd say for about 90% of shooters the sigma just wins due to the value ratio alone and it will be more than enough.

I’m very happy with Sigma - used them on my canon before and as someone who is not having a full time job / income dependent on videography / photography: An excellent choice. Seems to also be one of the few camera related companies out there that have somewhat of a soul and take great pride in their engineering for the price.

There is one use for this lens in sports - dance, when you are right on the edge of the scene. I have been using 24-105mm for that and F4 is not as big a problem as a tight zoom ring is, so the ability to control this would be great.

Like always, what makes Gerald's videos so impressive is that he presents the choices in an extremely unbiased fashion. Some reviewers elegantly dodge any potentially negatives of a product if they are image ambassadors etc :-)
It seems though like all these new premium zoom lenses (just like the new 70-200 ii) still have pretty weak bokeh and out of focus transitions. Just looking at the focus breathing section starting around @3:02min this is a rendering that if we talk about prime lenses you get at the 800 USD below mark from budget manufacturers. Even very old primes typically render so much better. So I am surprised that in most reviews people say "rendering is excellent". I guess what is meant is "for being a zoom lense it's as best as you can hope for". Seems to be really hard to get very nice rendering on top of all the other stuff that needs to be corrected in zoom lenses, some compromises have to be made after all.

Such a useful comparison! This might seem like a weird detail to fixate on, but I am honestly astounded that Sony isn't including the lens breathing correction on the A1 (as a $6500 USD flagship) and the A7S iii and FX3 (as $4500 video-first cameras).
It shouldn't be an incredibly tall order to include software corrections to visual defects that ship with the lenses THEY produce. It's not like we are asking for the kitchen sink here, they're first party lenses!

After a while using my new GM II, I noted that most of the reviews comment on the zoom ring “smooth or tight” switch plays a big role in varying the lense with my camera mounted to my capture clip. In tight, the barrel stays tight and does not extend. I feel that is the main point of the switch.

Nice video. Confirms that I made the right decision in getting the sigma a few months ago after watching your comparison video.
I could have afforded any of them at the time but the choice between the GM I and the Sigma was simple. And now between the GM II and the sigma I don’t see any reason to swap or feel buyers remorse. I love the sigma so far and feel it has a real character to it. The only thing that really makes the new GM more attractive is reduced size and weight. They really needed to hit a lower price point. I got the sigma and the Sony 20mm 1.8 for less than the price of the GM II.

I opted for the Sigma 2 years ago and have been happy with the image quality. But I've had to spend about $800 sending the lens back twice over these two years between repair fees and having to rent lenses in its place due to the dust issue you mentioned. $800 over 2 years isn't bad, but I do wish Sigma admitted this issue and did a free manufacturer recall rather than making me pay for their mistake. That leaves a bad taste in my mouth regarding my opinion of Sigma as a company.

      Is this normal?

    • @jettlifeproductions
      @jettlifeproductions 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@enjoygary it absolutely should not be. And it's been fine since the last time I sent it in. So I believe Gerald is correct in saying that some Sigma 24-70 lenses have that problem and some don't. And that also tells me that Sigma is aware of the issue. Now did they just silently create a 24-70 mkii? Are they intentionally banking off of people that they know have a faulty lens by forcing them to pay for repairs? I brought this issue up with Sigma, they basically said that they will consider my complaint and reduce the cost of the repair but I don't think they did. And I needed my lens back so I just paid it anyways.

@@jettlifeproductions Yes I looked into this before buying a 24-70 Sigma last year. The dust is / was, coming in through the zoom mechanism , an inherent problem for this design in all lenses ,BUT it seems the early runs actually had seals that were "too good" and created more a a vacuum cleaner effect , actually drawing in tiny dust particles and so defeating the whole idea . They now will change the seals , and in some locations they were doing it for free , as an unofficial recall but it seemed totally random. As you mention , the problem was never recognized by Sigma , and thats where they have screwed up with their customer base, personally I think its down to some loss of face thing in Japan. Sony did the same with the f5/55 infamous purple grid on the sensor problem , Sony in the UK / US where changing out an un blackened part that caused this effect ,for free , but in Japan they totally refused to even recognize it as not only a problem , but even that it existed or that they were being replaced overseas for free. Mine bought last year has not had any dust problem so far. Admitting fault, it seems ,is just not part of Sigma HQ,s corporate policy ..

Hey Gerald, you mentioned the new GM has a shorter minimum focus and larger maximum magnification than the Sigma but everywhere on Google it states the sigma shoots closer. This is the main factor for me so can you please confirm when/if you get the chance. Thank you!

Damn where’s the Tamron 28-75 v2 in this? Heard a small mention. It’s crazy how I remember when the Tammy came out everyone wanted it and got it. Now it’s barely in the convo.

I’ve got a friend selling me the original 24-70 for the same price as the the sigma. So I’m going that route. Only trinity lens left for a version 2 is the 16-35 2.8

Bang up summary there, tbh I might even watch to see if the original GM drops in price after this releases - I have yet to invest in a solid 24 - 70 and whilst I will probably just get the GM II (if funds allow), a significant price drop on a near new OG GM could sway me.

I saw and really liked your codec and compression guide video. Can you please make a complete guide on all encoder/compression settings with quality and size difference they make.. Also for my case use of screen recording(lots of unchanged frame) and game recording with decent quality at lowest size possible(I can compromise on resolution, fps and everything). Explain all encoder, codec, settings and how they work and effect video output. Which is better option to compress while recording or later for better result/smaller size and best software(s) to do so. I'll really appreciate it sir!

Could you tell me what you think the best "FULL AUTO MODE" is for this lens and the Sony A7Siii. I have these and I am not good with it. The Sony 90 v produces more useable footage. I need advice.

Hey Gerald Undone and Gerald Undone community, I hope you can help me solve this problem. I recently bought a Ninja V and own a Sony a7 IV. If connected, I’m stuck at UHD25 or UHD50 (my preferred codec is ProRes LT) how do I change resolution (and fps)? Changing it in-camera doesn‘t change it.
I did some research but nothing much came up and the few tipps I found did not help.

Is the Sony 24-70 good for filming at low light conditions with Sony fx3 ??

How is the exposure change through the zoom range on this new version. Im having issues with my 24-105 in the studio on fashion shoots keeping consistent exposures. Between a full length shot at say 35mm and a detail at 105mm im finding about 1/2 stop change. Really difficult when i need to match stills and video side by side.

Whaaat? What a nice surprise to start the day with coffee and this video! I can't wait for Sony to release a new 16-35 GM. The lighter form factor is very welcomed. Oh, and I'd like to also have focus breathing correction on the A7SIII/FX3, which are more expensive than the A1. Sony should 'tier' their firmware updates so anything higher priced than the A7IV gets the same features.

Not sure if anyone in the comments has covered this but the dust issues are localized to the first batch of lenses that didn’t have a seal that was put in later. I believe that they would clean the lens and install the seal under warranty

  • @TomatenDK

How big the dust issue with the sigma ? I really want it. But if its a big problem, I dont mind buying the GM I.
But is it like 50 % of the sigma lenses, or ?

  • @joshualaisequilla7264

Do you think that Sigma will release a new 24-70 2.8 now that Tamron and Sony have released their new versions? I'm thinking of getting the GM II, but I'm hesitant about what sigma will do now.

Thank you for the review Mr G, for once I can sleep easy! I don't think the original GM was heavy The weight reduction with GM2 is not as significant as when they upgraded the 70-200mmGM. Re size, I thought GM1 was/is fine. I use it to shoot docs handheld (no gimbal) and the barrel of the GM1 has always felt a good size in the palm of my XXL hand. I got my GM2 at a really good price, so I can rest easy. I've only just got the 70-200GM2. Now that IS a massive improvement on the first version.
