Virgil is making the drums a truly solo instrument, not merely playing a drum solo, but expressing the music he is playing in the same way as a guitar or saxophone.
The strength, control and speed he has in his wrists and hands to do what he's doing on tom heads that are THAT soft and offer just about ZERO rebound is staggering.
Virgil is the man. Small correction to the video text: the track he's playing over is actually "Eleven Pt.2" from Ruination; similar idea but the main bass groove is noticeably different to "Eleven" from In This Life.

as good and technical VD is, he’s playing the same lick in all the bands he’s played for, for decades. Planet X, Reign Of Fire, solo albums, Scott Henderson, intructionals, clinics....ho hum

Neil wasn’t even remotely close to the level of the Virgil’s and the Colman’s and the Larnels and the Vinnies. He was a great rock drummer and that was the limits of his playing ability. He did not play anything else well but yes RIP to the rock legend Neil Peart.
He was playing in 11/8 . It’s easier to find a comfortable way of counting it, than 1234567891011. So if you count the first 8 as a typical 4/4 groove ie “1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and “ each one of those counts equals an eighth note. Then add three more eighth note counts (in this case 123 is easy ) which equals 11. The whole counting phrase is 1and 2 and 3 and 4 and 123. Keep every count even. Once you get comfortable you could leave out the “and” count . Kind of how you were expressing it 1 2 3 4 123. Now as far as how he was playing the hi hat part that’s that’s a bit more involved.
Love it when he counts out loud...it’s like seeing a black hole...appreciating the impossible
I think escaping the event horizon would be easier than playing like Virgil.
ItsTrumpsFault haha, absolutely right!
Virgil has always been on another level.
"You can see where things are going there" Haha. Yes Virgil.... No, I really can't
Dude ur comment had me in stitches. Thanks man :)
1073 against 3 repeats every 3 measures of 1073
"Well, maybe YOU can, Virgil...."

I saw virgil and thomas Lang in one drum clinic,i gotta tell you that seeing them live in one room makes more impact than covid19
I would have loved to see their joint show

Mr Gartska. Your myshopify lessons are the ladders I use to be able to understand what Mr Donati plays.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard him talk before. He sounds very cool and intelligent.
Never noticed the lisp, until now
My favourite drummer. What an inspiration. Love your work Virgil ! So good
Virgil is just a chocking professional musician. On drumming as far as I know!
No I spell wrong - shocking 👍
The first drummer I saw at a clinic, changed my perspective when I was very young.

Still pushing the envelope, just a brilliant musician
Said a tool guy, am i right?
I always loved trying to explain this to guitarists in my bands, sometimes it was like i was speaking a totally different language to them.
Pfft, guitarists. 😂🤣😂🤣😂
Tout un style, ce que je retiens c’est sa fluidité, sa puissance et sa précision, un musicien tout simplement genial
That has gotta be the coolest way of counting 11/8 in Virgils example 🎶🎶🎶🎵😎
The very first organize TH-cam drum channel

Sounds like an inverted double paradiddle
Down to earth
Interesting when great musicians get a thumbs down ... those giving the thumbs down must be highly accomplished musicians 🤣
Gianni Cocilova Reason is jealousy...
I understand the feel bit. But I don't understand how dotted eight notes on the hihat pedal helps you get that feel. Anyone care to explain? :)
thx
what size rack toms and bass drum was virgil using here?
Yes, Bill Stewart is a great drummer....

Virgil is one of the best ever.
Drum Channel continues to disappoint with it's poor audio mix. Virgil is thunder and this does not present as such.
I thought the same. Needs a room mic along with the close mics.
