HOLDSWORTH LIVE IN ROME

  • The final concert of the Allan Holdsworth Europe Chapter 2 tour in 2012. The rather anomalous venue is the Montemartini Museum in central Rome. As eccentric as the setting may seem, it does provide artistic inspiration. The acoustics are quite something to contemplate though, as you can't even imagine the 'excessive' natural ambience of the venue. And, adding to our auditory challenges, problems with the 8 track recording from the night, meant we had to resort to the 'back up' stereo room mix. Hopefully this still captures the essence of the performance and will suffice for web purposes.

Allan ahead of the game, as usual. At any given point in his career you will notice that his playing comes from 35 years on. Everyone is trying to sound like metal fatigue Allan today, but the man never settled. Here he was in 2012 making sounds from 2059 with those glorious Yamaha Magicstomps. This is what amazes me the most about Allan. He was leagues ahead with no intent of leaving breadcrumbs

@@kcorpora1 seen Holdsworth with Chad, Virgil, Gary H, Bozzio, Mastelotto, and Bruford. In fact, Allan lived less than a mile away when he was in Tustin. He also used to hang out at the bar in the San Juan Creek golf course where I would go watch friends play. The “extra” drums in a larger kit do in fact serve a useful purpose. They are not extraneous or ancillary for drummers who know how to play larger kits. In the same way Allan used more expansive chords which took advantage of 9ths, 11ths, 13ths in order to obtain his signature sound. These type of arguments leveled by the more simplistic and rudimentary player are merely soft excuses for not having developed more. Allan’s music was deep and complex and not always easily understood at first listening. Music should at times make demands upon the listener. There is so much basic music that we hardly need to make a defense for it. It is also true that Mc Donald’s has served Billions. This does not make the food any better than properly prepared food created by a true chef and artisan. Too many people excuse mediocrity and lack of growth.

I just love the humility of Allan, visually he could look like some hayseed in a grunge rock band...and then you hear him play!! Music that spans across the universe , incorporating sounds and chords from prehistoric tectonic movements to things to come far in the future...

9:33-9:40 goosebumps every time.. sounds like there’s over 800 guitars being played at once

This group have really come into their own now. Virgil has matured into Allan's music and Anthony is unbelievable. As for Allan... Well - what can I say. Still pushing he boundaries with a tone that is beautiful and epic.

Most can't even fathom how good he really was, speed and accuracy, of course, he was so nuanced, almost superhuman!

The worlds by far most sofisticated and interestingly skilled guitar player died in poverty. I miss him. Saw him twice in NYC and one time in STO. Best ever Alan.
