    Whilst in Montréal, Canada, I managed to meet up with Francis from The Fuji Guys, to get a hands-on look at the Fujifilm GFX 50R medium format mirrorless camera. I'd previously been able to see this camera at Photokina, but didn't get a chance to take photos with it until now!
    Even though I only really got to use it for a few hours on the streets of Le Plateau-Mont-Royal and up the top of Mount Royal, I found it incredibly convenient and familiar to use, based on my previous experiences with my Fujifilm X100F, X-H1, X-Pro2, X-T2 etc. Everything about this camera just feels like a bigger version of almost every other Fujifilm camera. The shooting experience was just as enjoyable and the files that came out were just as pleasant, although mind-blowingly detailed!
    I like the direction Fujifilm is heading in with the GFX series, starting with the GFX 50S, this GFX 50R and the upcoming GFX 100. The competitive pricing and abundance of features and lens options are very refreshing for the camera industry and I'm excited to see how it will develop in the future. It's especially interesting to see how competitive and saturated the full-frame market has become lately, in comparison to this medium format market.
    Apologies for the wind noise in this video. I knew it was windy but was unaware how sneakily annoying this particular wind was for getting on the microphone. I guess you could say this was "the wrong wind" for my wind filters...?

    Gotta keep in mind it's a medium format camera. So it's not going to be as fast as the APS-C sensor cameras. I would love this camera for portraiture and landscapes. Just couldn't really see using it as a street camera. Great video though.

    • @joeallam
      @joeallam  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I think it’s doing a good job in comparison to older medium format systems, but it’s always going to be a game of catch up as both systems develop. If I was a portrait photographer, this would absolutely be a top choice for me!

    • @michaels8597
      @michaels8597 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      looks like a great option..I use a slower DSLR,and there's no real difference in the street shooting.Great shots are composed,so i dont need spray and pray..

    • @Fabio-rg9nv
      @Fabio-rg9nv 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think it‘s actually great for nearly all types of photography. These days we‘re all looking for speed and bursting through shots, I imagine it to be really nice to be slowed down by a medium format camera and appreciate photography, think about the shot and MAKE a photo instead of just taking it. But obviously there a lot of areas and styles where speed is needed so it‘s great that we also have those really fast cameras.

    • @killer120070507
      @killer120070507 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What do you mean "its not fast" and why is this inherent to medium format? Makes zero sense. If this camera has slow auto focus, slow burst rate, high shutter lag, thats all due to this being a badly designed camera and has nothing to do with it being a larger format.

    • @killer120070507
      @killer120070507 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Phil Jones65 Agreed. I think its straight up misleading marketing to call 44x33mm for medium format. The width is still less than the width of 35mm film.

    You're more excited about the camera instead of the composition results and final message of a photography. Even with XE3 or XH1 you can do impressive photos with much less cost of the system. 50R is big and bulky, people will observe you immediately. For street Xpro2 will be the best choise or the new XT3.

      @andyhoov 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I got to play around with one at a store recently and I was actually surprised how comfortable it was to hold. It looks like there isn't much of a grip, but because the camera's so thick, the body itself almost acts like a big, solid grip.

    • @joeallam
      @joeallam  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, that’s exactly what I was going to say too! The thickness really helps bulk it up comfortably.

    • @joeallam

    What is the practical use for a medium format these days? Extreme large files, bulky, slow, expensive? Nice for cropping, maybe billboard work? What else? I have an XT2, wondering what the advantage of purchasing this would do? Someone mentioned portraits. How are portraits better?

    • @ChrisM-yq2pq

      B H better bokeh. Your focal length is higher so you get more compression compared to an equivalent focal length in 35mm

    • @mortenthorpe
      @mortenthorpe 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      zoom factor is not related to the canera body, but to the lens… so… the currently longest native lens for gfx is 250mm, can be paired with a 1.4 tele extender… but, you can use any non-R Canon lens via adapters, albeit expensive with autofocus support, on the GFX

    Nice video - so, what was the conclusion - is medium format only useful if you need to print big or did it give something more than just resolution vs Fuji APSC?

    • @joeallam
      @joeallam  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For me, it's not going to replace any of my gear, but I respect the direction and ideals that Fujifilm are working towards with this format. The resolution aspect isn't really necessary anymore given the state of current APS-C and full-frame sensors. I did notice a certain "look" to the imagery, but again, not quite enough to make me want one/justify it. I don't often shoot at shallow depths of field, so I'm not personally looking for that look anyway. But yet still, I only shot with it for a couple of hours so this was definitely only my first impressions and I want to revisit it as the system develops!

    • @joeallam
      @joeallam  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, renting before buying is always a wise choice! The GFX 100 is very exciting indeed. I'm intrigued to know what other specs they might throw at it, but mainly I'm seeing it as an exceptionally large sized sensor in a DSLR sized body! Hopefully, I'll get a hands-on, but these things are never guaranteed, unfortunately.

    Ouch...not a good start location for vlogging in Montreal! One of the less attractive areas of the city. More for bargain hunting, lower rents and small charming restaurants and shops. The Old Port and Old Montreal, is the place to be for all that is photo and video opts, but more in the summer. The view from the top of Mount Royal is a good choice for visitors. Trail mix payoffs is the key to squirrel closeups. No spectacular tall architecture just yet , but a great view of the city from the Chalet lookout.

    The images are fantastic, but they should be with the huge sensor. That's about it! Trying to make a medium format camera into a point & shoot style camera is pointless. The only thing that sold me on this camera was the images. This is a professional LARGE kickass sensor and needs it's respect in a proper camera body to justify quality vs cost whereas the serious photographer will be interested. Sorry but this does nothing for me and I don't like anything about this camera at all.

    • @joeallam
      @joeallam  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I understand your thoughts and align with you on most of them. I personally am not interested in having this camera for the type of photography I do. It was interesting to have a play with one and see "what if", but on reflection, I'm not craving it in hindsight. If I was a landscape/portrait photographer it may be a different story. The design updates to make a rangefinder version of the GFX 50S doesn't bother/offend me though. I'm glad to see they're working to make these cameras as accessible to as many photographers as possible; it's going to be interesting to see how the wide the technology may grow.

    • @Loopsrainforest
      @Loopsrainforest 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm totally confused by your comment. The quality vs cost is more than there with the camera. Its extremely cheap for a MF body & the GFXs is more for the studio where the GFXr is more of a landscapes & travel.

    • @IslandFilmMaker
      @IslandFilmMaker 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Loopsrainforest Not sure what your confusion is, just explained it! The cost of the size of this heavy monster that Fujifilm is trying to markets as a small medium format kind of pocket camera is a bit ridiculous. I like what the company has done over the past 2 years with mirrorless with medium and full frame formats however this isn't one of them. Then there's the cost of this camera and lenses for this that takes it out of play for most and s a professional, I wouldn't show up with this camera at a job
