  • Recently I have been on a mission to see if there is a better landscape photography camera out there for me and this week I have a Fujifilm GFX 50R medium format camera. I meet up with BVS & Jodie and head to Dunstanburgh to capture some seascapes during a cold winter sunset.

    You set the nearest shutter speed on the top dial and then use the back thumb dial for the more precise adjustment to speeds that aren't listed on the top dial. Also, it has BUILT IN focus bracketing. If you actually learn about the camera you'll get so much more out of it.

      Many fuji fan girls say fuji has the best ergos and are easy to use, yet we can see that is quite the lie. The grip is terrible, it's like holding a huge solid brick with no good grip. Lack of d-pad. Dumb dials that only please nostalgic old school film camera users. Lenses are huge for the body. If you have to read the manual to go out and simply take manual settings of slow paced photography then it isn't well designed nor intuitive.

      @@junjunt119 Like using a goddamned Sony or Canon R are intuitive? Don't make me laugh. Using any professional grade tool without reading the manual once is a fool's game. And yes, Fuji does a fantastic job exposing most of the critical controls on physical dials, vs having to menu dive on other modern brands.
      I've shot Oly, Canon, Fuji, and Sony, and Fuji are by far and away the most fun and intuitive to shoot on.

      Thank you Len. I really like Thomas' channel but this series of "how to bumble through enormously expensive cameras!" is already grating on me. Learn the camera, THEN use it. Learn at least simple stuff like how to set SS and what base ISO is and how to focus. Sheesh.

      @@scotttucker9613 Yes a Sony or EOSR are easier to use MANUAL MODE without reading a damn manual if you're an experienced photographer. If an experienced photographer like Thomas cannot figure out how to set his shutter speed on the Fuji than that speaks volume of its design for BASIC functions. The whole switch to T dial or going the closest speed you want than using the rear dial thing is stupid and unintuitive unless you come from or long for a film like camera. This is the 21st century, a digital camera, it doesn't need to be complex for the sake of nostalgia.

    From a full frame DSLR to a medium format mirrorless camera from a different brand with completely different controls and ideas of usability, that‘s a big difference for usage. You definitely should have looked into the system a little bit before taking it out. It was the same thing for me when I used a Nikon DSLR in school, it was super weird and I couldn’t figure out a lot of things coming from my Fujifilm X-T20. It‘s also like switching between Mac and Windows or iOS and Android. No matter how good those systems are, if you never used one of them, you‘re going to be confused for sure.
    The shutter speed on Fujifilm cameras is really straight forward. The shutter speed dial shows full stops and you can always fine tune it with the back dial from there. For more than 1 second you set it to T and use the back dial from there. At least that‘s how it works on my X-T20 and I‘m sure the medium format is not different as long as you didn‘t customize the back dial for something different.

Everything in the last month or so was like "I just took it and went out" or "I just stood up and turned on the camera to film this and I don't know what I am talking about". With lots of viewers comes great responsibility, expecially when it comes down to gear. Even if you are saying that everybody should try bevore buying something, you have to know that there are a lot of people who will actually buy what you use! And I can't watch any more unprepared high-end-camera-testing videos of you. 1. RTFM! - 2. Try it for yourself! - 3. Make a video. Not the other way around... Sorry. Love you.

I just felt it bordered on insulting to Fuji to take the camera out of the box and head straight out to shoot a minorly challenging location and wanting to focus stack. He did not seem to take advantage of focus peaking, did not know how to set shutter speed using T setting, and did not know about focus bracketing which I believe the camera can do, but will retract if I am wrong. He also threw doubt on the sharpness of the lens. I am a Canon 1DS3 user (but less and less) having moved to the Fuji X System, now with 3 Fuji X cameras, and a suite of lenses, and the lenses are all superb. I have little doubt that when Thomas gets his head around the camera and it’s simplicity of use that he will recognise it as an incredibly capable piece of kit. What people seem to be forgetting about this whole "mission to see if there is a better camera" is that this is solely for Thomas. These aren't review videos, you can find those elsewhere. What Thomas is trying to do is treat these cameras the same way he would his bread and butter 5DIV. For him this is a fair comparison to see which one feels the best, and produces the images that HE feels are the best. If he has to faff about with the settings and it feels uncomfortable to him, then that's a con to the camera. For HIM. Perhaps not to someone else, but from what I've gathered it seems like he doesn't want this camera change to affect his workflow. I could be wrong, that's just my observation. Thanks for another one of my relaxing mornings Thomas. Cheers!

    Hi Thomas, appreciate your videos as always. I completely agree with your take on the canon vs fujifilm live view sharpness. When I switched from Canon DSLRs 2 years ago to Fujifilm, I noticed that I couldn't manually focus as precisely using live view. On a canon, you could zoom in to 10x and get an almost pixel level view to ensure perfect focus. However, I currently own 4 Fujifilm cameras, X-T3, X-T20, X100F, and X70 and none of them have the same level of detail when using manual focus. Even with focus peaking and 10x zoom, the manual precision is not as good as Canon. I found this to be the case whether I am using the EVF or the LCD screen. For me, this is most bothersome when doing astrophotography as I end up having to take several test shots to get properly focused. I'm surprised that more people have not mentioned this shortcoming before. While I have not used any GFX series cameras, I can easily see why they would have the same live view issues. I don't believe it is a matter of sensor resolution since my canon only had 20MP, but it's more likely the resolution of the digital signal being transferred to the EVF and LCD. Hopefully by bringing attention to this, Fujifilm will listen and improve the performance with a firmware change.

Shooting with new camera (leave shooting with new system alone) requires weeks if not months of learning. Basics are always the same, but how AF works in different scenarios, how WB works in different circumstances, how metering works in difficult conditions and on top of that how your workflow changes due to new equipment and editing requirements - all of that is requiring serious consideration, testing, shooting, experimenting, failing, shooting, re-doing, failing until the point you learn your camera like your credit card's pin code.

However, I am rather mystified why 1) you didn't bother to read the manual for the camera for a system you've never used before, and 2) with all due respect, what exactly was the point of this video? The only conclusion I can come to is it documents how ompletely unprepared you were to use this camera for your day's outing.

    • @MatthewSaville
      @MatthewSaville 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nobody reads camera manuals anymore, unless they are absolutely stuck on a particular customization or feature. Especially for anyone who has previously shot with the same brand for say, 10+ years, picking up a new version of the same-brand camera is extremely easy. For about 10+ years, Nikon has even been including a little "question mark button" that helps you understand all the settings, even the deepest customizations. I can honestly say that In the last 10+ years of reviewing dozens of cameras from Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Sony, and others, I've only ever had to get out a camera manual two or three times, and that was usually just to verify something that I already knew was not possible.
      For many viewers, these types of "first impressions" videos are very helpful, especially if they themselves are also coming from a different brand.

    Tom,
    Once you get it sussed, I reckon you'll find the GFX very rewarding. A few months ago, I bought the GFX 50 S. The images are very fine, but, analogous to shooting 4x5 view cameras (I know you've had this experience) I found I needed to really, really slow-down. I've learned to go slow using my full frame Canons, but I have to further put the brakes on using the medium format kit. I think Wyatt Earp stated, regarding gunfighting, "Make haste slowly." A good, if slightly disturbing, analogy.
    Once you can breath easily in the medium format atmosphere, your results will be ultimately satisfying. I'm looking forward to your next step in using the new system.
    Thank-You,
    Mike

  • @MatthewSaville

    Canon definitely has the best live view as far as manual focusing for landscape photography goes. "Bang-on, pin-sharp" is very true!
    To compensate, what I've done on most other cameras is just turn the in-camera sharpening way up, all the way to the max in fact. This really helps the back-of-the-camera images, both live view and during playback, appear pin-sharp. Just be sure to turn that in-camera sharpening back down if you ever shoot JPG or video, because it will completely over-cook your fine detail in those formats! This is only safe to do when shooting RAW.
    Thomas, considering how often you crop to 4:5 with your 2:3 DSLR cameras, I'm suspecting that once you get to really know the GFX, you'll find you really love it! It's almost as lightweight as a 5D4 and a 24-70, if I am not mistaken, and the image quality, ...yeah. Pretty incredible. The only question I haven't personally answered for myself yet is, just how sharp are the corners on those wider lenses like the 23mm. Because that Canon 24-70 (mk2) has insanely sharp corners at landscape apertures, even on a 5DsR! Either way, definitely looking forward to your next video, even though I'm sad the D850 didn't get a fair shake it seems. (BTW, did I miss you testing out the A7R3 too, or you saying why you were skipping it for now? Or is that trial period coming after the Fuji?)

    • @MatthewSaville
      @MatthewSaville 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      To clarify, turning your in-camera sharpening up to the max does NOT serve the purpose of "hiding" a slightly soft image behind over-compensated sharpening, that was not my point. Because once you see what GOOD sharpness looks like with this trick, you'll also know exactly when the sharpness just isn't there, too. It's VERY clear when an image is perfectly sharp at 100%, and when it's slightly soft.
      So, give the in-camera sharpening trick a go. It might help with the GFX. (Does the 50R have no AA filter, like the D850 / A7R3?)

  • @jojoaausone
    @jojoaausone 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey, TH. I think you would be happier with the 50S version because (as you know) its EVF is centered, like a DSLR's. There is also a tilting adapter available for the EVF. These are clear advantages for on tripod shooters. Of course, these come at a significant price premium. Still, if you are sold on the files the system produces, maybe you could justify the extra $$$.

I don't think there was any harm in going out and having a play without knowing the 50R intimately. Even if you'd read the manual first you'd have likely forgotten most of what you'd read by the time you went out to shoot anyway. Sometimes just getting out there and going hands on can be the best way of learning - it certainly makes for a useful first impressions video anyway! Don't worry about all the cranky fan boys and girls getting all in a tizz. You're gonna get that on the web no matter what you do. Tom, are you thinking of using a Sony system? I think that the a9 or the A7riii would be a great camera for you.

      Yeah the a9. Coz he needs 20 frames per second.

      A9? Do you know what kind of of photography Sony created the A9 for and what Thomas shoots? Seriously man!

    I own the GFX50R and I shot it using the 32-64 and had no problem with the camera what
    so ever .

    You talked about not having time to get familiar with the camera. I've got an event coming up at the end of January and am really thinking about jumping on the EOS R. But timing will be tight so.. I may be in the same boat. Ugh. Not worried at all. ;-)

    I know some people are complaining about the video, but I quite like this "just going out and being a landscape photographer" style video, showing the frustrations as well as what went well. Also, it's not a review, just "my first time using a Fuji"; we all know what it's like switching to a new camera and I suspect like Thomas, I'm not one for reading the manual if I can just rush out and use it! Embleton Bay is a stunning location, one of my favourites too. Great warning about those rocks though. I ended up slipping on them once and the only thing that saved me from a cracked head was my tripod strapped to my rucksack getting trapped across the rocks. It still carries the scar and gaffer tape bandage to this day! On another (solo) trip, my partner Kim slipped and twisted her knew. Fortunately some blokes on the golf course saw her fall and rushed over to help and carried her back to her car. So, you have been warned! :-)

    It's so funny that people are watching a free channel and complaining about the content :-)

      People like you are the problem of the quality of lots of youtube videos. "Take any crab and shut your mouth because it's free".

    The clue is in the title people, 'My First Time Using a Fuji | The GFX 50R'. If he'd gone out and looked at all the settings first, then the video would be called 'My second time using a Fuji, the GFX 50R'. Get a grip and stop being so precious.

    Great location! I’m A UK-born Canadian. Spent my childhood summers hiking in the Lake District and Northumberland. My favourite spots were Dunstanburgh, Bamburgh and Lindisfarne. Lovely country, great shot, and thanks for taking me back in time.
