Fujifilm GFX 50R Real World Review

  • This is far from a normal camera review. Instead I take the FujiFilm GFX 50R all over the North of England, battling the elements and doing some landscape photography to test out the camera. There is rain, snow and difficult conditions but hopefully a few good images and a conclusion at the end.

    Adam, the photos in this vlog are - inspiring. Regardless of the review, I always enjoy your honesty and passion for your landscape photography, because you are always out there, regardless of the weather conditions. I particularly like your end notes which give some idea of your thoughts and where you feel you are going and what you believe you will achieve. I personally wish you the very best of good fortune and really hope you succeed in this venture.
    If I could I would fund a trip for you to come to Australia and do some landscape photography here, but at this stage my circumstances do not allow it. But who knows, one day ...
    Hope to see you out there.

    Great shots Adam, though I’m putting that down to your talent as much as the camera. But I do think there’s something special about the 645 format, and it’s my go to for analogue landscape photography. What I think you have tested are all the right things, cold weather, long exposure and weather sealing.
    The detail is pretty phenomenal and there was definitely no discernible noise on any of the images on my screen.
    An excellent review Adam, very well done indeed and that’s for going out in that weather to test it.

    As a panoramic photographer myself (well, didn't take much of panoramas lately) that panorama of yours really rocks. Actually, it gets me back to the basics, because in time, all what I come to think of is, doing full-panoramas (360x180) and I totally forget about focusing on a specific element in the scene (I might skip a scene because one or two elements don't fit or just don't get along with the rest).

  • @Topsyrm
    @Topsyrm 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Adam, you, like everyone else who are testing/reviewing the GFX50R, are looking at it in isolation. It is part of a system and the R body it is as you say more at home as a walk around even travel camera but for landscape you have to look back to its older brother the GFX 50S which resolves the handling issues you and many others are bemoaning. It has the larger grip and has the benefit of the extra angle of tilt to the screen plus the tilt swivel adapter for the EVF (no hard plastic surround) combined with the ability to use an L Bracket and change batteries on the tripod.

    • @Firstmanphotography
      @Firstmanphotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm......it was never intended to be a comparison video so by definition there is an element of isolation. However my opinion is born from using all the different cameras including the 50S - th-cam.com/video/-JDloDIAi8M/w-d-xo.html. I am just sharing my thoughts on the camera as I use it out in the field and commenting on a few things I like and dislike. You're spending £4000 plus lenses in isolation so I would want to know what the compromises are.
      Bemoaning?? I don't think so. More like loving my landscape photography with a great camera.

    Nicely made video, lovely scenery, I'm from Scarborough, just a thought about what you said about holding the camera, Fuji make a piece that screws underneath the camera I think and it has a an extra holding grip on the right hand side.

    One of the things that interests me about the GFX 50r is its 'xpan' mode, would have been interested in seeing you use that in the video.

    Great review, thanks. Something inside me has always wanted a medium format but in reality I've no practical use for it, it would just be for the sake of having more megapixels and a bit more dynamic range. So I was very glad that there were no technical specs in the film!

    Fujifilm should make a rubber eye-cup with peel and stick to put on the eyepiece something that if it starts to wear you can just peel it off and put on a new one. When I look into my camera viewfinder I like to block out everything so I can just concentrate on the composition and make sure I'm not missing something the excitement of thinking you have a good composition can blind you of mistakes you see when reviewing your images later. Thanks for the real world use of the camera.👍

  • @PK-ql5en
    @PK-ql5en 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I am just wondering - when you say during the long exposure that you don't need the calculator does it mean that the camera itself does the calculations automatically and sets up the right time for the long exposure? So in your case you have selected F16 and 100 ISO - was the time needed set up by the camera itself?

    • @Firstmanphotography
      @Firstmanphotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The camera can see through the filter so you can meter as normal.

    • @PK-ql5en
      @PK-ql5en 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Firstmanphotography I am terribly sorry I am still a bit confused. I understand when you say that the camera can see through the filter - it is shown in your great video. What I don't get is the actual set up of the time. The way I set up my long exposures on my 5dmk3 is that I select the fstop then the iso and for the time I use the calculator and set up accordingly - all manual. I see that here you set up your fstop and iso as well but then things get a bit foggy. It seemed to me that something similar was mentioned by you while you were shooting long exposure with XT-3 as well - I must admit I didn't get the actual set up then as well. Sorry if this is obvious I am not quite familiar with Fuji cameras. Do you mind explaining in a bit more detail?

    • @Firstmanphotography
      @Firstmanphotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Im bit entirely sure what you are asking. Its as if the filter isn't even on the camera. You just meter the shot (in manual) as you would any other image when there is no filter on....ie using the meter readout, the Histogram and the lcd screen.

    What do you think of the GFX R for a photojournalist?

    • @Firstmanphotography
      @Firstmanphotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Overkill. If you want to go with fuji the xt3 is much less conspicuous.

    Sensor is amazing, glass is amazing, camera is as butt-ugly as it gets. Just an oversized crop sensor cam. Uncomfortable to hold, and buttons for tiny fingers...great for the designers but not for us with normal/large hands. This is where Hasselblad totally got it right with the design, if they only completed it with a proper EVF and a couple other things. Your images in this video are just stunning.

    I think the batteries suffer in the cold. Some mountain extreme guys keep the batteries inside their clothing when not taking photos.

    it's a nice APS medium format camera. but the 50s has a more usable flex viewfinder.
    fyi: fuji makes lenses for hasselblad and asia owns hasselblad.

      Yes. I'd go with the 50R if that's the only reason though at £2000 cheaper.

    Does Lightroom still give the worms artifacts on the images from this camera when sharpening? Like all the other X-trans cams.

    • @mrsusan893
      @mrsusan893 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does not use x-trans.

    You’ve got to be kidding me right? Not enough of an upgrade from a crappy Canon?! Lol. I own the 50r and various lenses. I no longer own my Nikon D800e’s and the associated lenses, especially since going Fuji in 2012.

    Nice episode! At $6000.00 US for the body and lens it is too much not to offer everything. :(

      Still lots of money. I suppose mirrorless cameras will completely replace DSLR's. In any event your episodes are wonderful and I will just have to save my pennies.

      I paid 4K just for my Leica M9 5 years again it has even less than the 50R.. Its all about perspective...Just wait a couple of years here 50R will be in the 2K range done@@thomaskauffman983

    Was watching the review all the way until the point where you said that Fuji sent you the camera to review it. You lost me there, completely.
