  • You want to boost your Miata/MX-5 or just tune it? You will need a proper engine management system like the ME221 ! I bought the ME221 Plug and Play ECU and installed it on my Miata. Check out the video how easy it is to install and why I didn't bought the MegaSquirt ECU.

    I personally run megasquirt on my Miata, but I am always happy to see more options out there. It forces everyone to be better.

    Nice work! I looked at this ecu option for my turbo build. So long as you can "control" timing and fuel flow, low boost isn't hard to do. I like the suede/alcantara console too ;)

    Hey Luca, great video's as always. Where die you get it tuned? I really want this ecu but don't find a place to get it tuned...(from Belgium).

    QUESTION:
    I own a NB miata from 2000 but it does not have a OBD2 port below the fusebox, i only have a diagnostics box beneath the hood. Is it possible to buy the ME221 and for example build a OBD2 port to the fusebox so i can use my bluetooth dongle and display everything on my android radio?

    Hey! another awesome video man! I'm quite the beginner involving miata's and I just recently bought one, I just noticed tonight that my hood isn't properly aligned. Is there any way to fix this? Thanks!

      Congratulations on buying a Miata! You can adjust the height with 2 rubber knobs in de front of the car, horizontally, just loosen the 4 bolts and allign it correctly

    Awesome to see an alternative "mainstream" ECU here, also very cool how this really is the first time you start it, with all the problems one could encounter, makes it feel like the audience is part of the project!
    Keep it up, really loving the content and further inspiring me to turbo my 1.8.. it's just so expensive in Germany to actually legally drive a car with a turbo added to it...(Tüv etc.) how is it in the Netherlands?

    • @janprokopenko7928
      @janprokopenko7928 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's exactly what I'm asking myself, how am i gonna get it through tuv, without rebuilding the car back and not paying 5000€ to specialized company.

      +Car Karl I can imagine it will be mainstream within a few years. I wanted to give an honest review and make a legit install video so that's why is showed everything and I must say it's super easy to install.
      Thanks I definitely will. In The Netherlands it's allowed to increase power by 40%, as long as the displacement or number of cylinders remains the same.

      +Luca Car Mods that's such a cool law!! i have to move over there :D i only live like 1,5hrs away anyway...

      +Car Karl But you can buy cars cheaper and have cheap gas haha.

    • @konny5173
      @konny5173 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Fetii27 BABATTRO gas is like 1,30€ per L right now, how much is it where you live? :O
      Do you really think there is a big price difference with cars? I mean you could buy a car from Germany and register it in the Netherlands easily i think.. at least it works the other way around.
      there's a mint LHD Rx7 Fd for sale in the Netherlands, like 3 hrs from where i live which i have been eyeballing for quite a while...

    I have a 4efte from Statlet Glanza V swapped in a Corolla E11 Hatchback. Should I buy this ECU or go with a DET3?

    • @LucaCarMods
      @LucaCarMods  ปีที่แล้ว

      They are 2 different options. One is a piggyback ecu and the other a full blown standalone ecu. So it really depends on what you want it to do.

    • @djfrankieflowers
      @djfrankieflowers ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LucaCarMods TBH I would prefer the standalone like you did but after what I read about it I got worried because it seems that it has issues especially with a auto gearbox converted to manual like my ep91 4efte. I wrote an email to the company to understand more about the risks.

    Are these really focused on miata's? Or can they be used easily on any other car tot?

    • @LucaCarMods
      @LucaCarMods  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Captain Bacon They have a few models which are focused on Miata's and one which is universal.

      +Luca Car Mods Ah thx! Is the MS priced higher?

    • @LucaCarMods

      Yes it's priced higher and from what I've read, a lot less easy to set up.

  • @Edupion
    @Edupion 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    how about MOT when you get to pass that with the turbo?

    • @LucaCarMods
      @LucaCarMods  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Should be no problem, maybe the emission test but I can hook it up to my laptop and alter the map.

    • @blankpage1995
      @blankpage1995 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Luca Car Mods or you could just open the wastegate completely so it builds no boost during the test, or remove a piece of intercooler piping then plug in the old ecu, you wouldnt even have to swap the case back. just plug it in do the test then plug the new one back in

      I had a MS on my first miata and my current, I went with the ME442. Definitely a price jump, but their customer service is great, it takes absolutely nothing to get the car started and the features available (especially with the 442) is amazing.

  • @yossi126
    @yossi126 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Congrats, but the reasons you mentioned why not megasquirt are non existent. If by starting you mean cranking than it takes maybe a second more than stock with a good table. There are a lot of good base tunes you can use to fire up the car. I have seen cranking of an me221 from the designer itself and it took 5-6 seconds.. It was painful to watch.
    Also MS has MSdroid for smartphones (not sure about me221). What you can say is that the me221 is cheaper than a PNP MS in which case I'd agree.

    • @MotorsportElectronics
      @MotorsportElectronics 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +yossi126 That was an initial development vid, cranking is now OEM, and every major MX5 tuner prefers the ME221 over the Megasquirt... so its them you need to convince :)

      I am honored by your reply! I ordered my ms3 just a few months before your ecu came out, and my friend will be installing his me221 together with his td04 in a few weeks time, so I am looking forward to see how it performs. We are spoiled by the choice of ecu's today so good luck to you and everyone :)

    is it still working ? why try something that come from nowhere when you have the known and top quality MegaSquirt for cheaper and have 50 000 time more support ? those might be very good but they look like the AEM total crap ecu. the fact that the flex fuel is an "advanced" feature for this one while it is a basic feature for most other ecu pick my curiosity. "worldwide tuner network" but after looking it is only EU and maybe some rare around it. thats not worldwide... but most importantly , none of your statement about megasquirt are valid... just install and tune it properly and you will see that even the old megasquirt 1 with a v1.0 board is STILL on the top best engine management system ( but for older car... else you need at least a megasquirt 2 v3.0 ). the megasquirt you can mod it later so it WILL work no matter what is your project. with this one you are stuck with it as it is and its way pricier for no apparent reason. thare are betetr option than megasquirt , but for 4x the price but they're known brand unlike this "motorsport electronics" since years.
