Oh my god, please continue this series, talking about the new cards/pokémon that came in with each additional set, how it changed the format/what the meta was back then and when rotations hit/how it effected the game.
I have SO much nostalgia for the first 3 sets so would love for you to carry this on! :D

I too was 10 when the pokemon TCG came to the states. I was already hooked on the show and games so I just had to get the cards. I played competitively (Rain Dance Blastoise) until I was 13 then Yu-Gi-Oh came and I switched to that for a few years. Then I gave all of it up when I turned 15 or 16 and pursued other activities. I continued to play the games on gameboy but stopped collecting and sold all my pokemon and yu-gi-oh collections, which I regret to this day. Then I started watching your videos on youtube a few years ago and it brought me back into the TCG. Now its something I get to share with my daughter and its almost like getting a second childhood because I get to teach her all of the generations that I grew up with.

I was around eleven when the cards came to brazil in 1999, they were too expensive for us but I was deadset on collecting them all, I remember the dragonite card being my wallpaper on the old family computer.
Sadly, since it was expensive I only had one guy to play with and I was too young to ride alone the bus downtown to play with other kids.
It started to get old for me so I stopped collecting them, gladly I still have them somewhere.

I love these videos covering the old cards/formats! I was in elementary school when the cards hit the U.S. and I remember collecting and spending so much time just admiring the artwork. Only a few kids actually knew how to play the TCG and always drew a crowd at recess. Really takes me back, thanks!

That golden time between the end of the 90's and beginning of the 00's. Best timing ever being around 8 yo in 99. Collecting cards, playing for them, saving money for boosters. I never played competitive back in the day, just chilled with my friends and now I can see how innocent we were lol. Never had seen an Item finder card till I got adult.
But still, gust of wind, plus power and energy removal made me won so many matches I'm forever grateful for them.

Additional info: I don't know about other countries, but here in Brazil every new years Eve meant new season of Pokemon coming to CN (all hail the old CN!). It was basically a tradition: by the final day of the year, CN would re-air the previous season until the point, by new year's eve, the new season would air.
All I wanted was to finish watching the fireworks ok Copacabana beach and come back as soon as possible to watch the upcoming adventures of Ash and his crew.

While I could easily watch retro openings for hours on end, this kind of video is so refreshing (and massively nostalgic!). Pulling those epic holo cards was amazing, but it's so easy to forget about those of us who were old enough to get to grips with the TCG at the time.

Amazing video, I been looking for content like this ever since I started back playing a couple weeks ago last time I played was 2017. I used to collect and play some during base set too. I was so young though I don't remeber it much. Also me and my brother did not play very long cause we got into Magic and our town had a community for MTG but not Pokemon so we stopped playing Pokemon. Anyways I watched the 6k stream and been watching a lot of your youtube. Amazing content and great player! Keep it up!! (:

i love playing the gen 1 format on TCG ONE!
you can play base set only, base-jungle, and classic in quickplay mode however, but as a career player, i play gen 1 which is base set to gym. and i use Jason's blog for a lot of my decks, including my favourite "Tickling Machine Moltres!" that deck has won me so many games on the site, its untrue! and so unfair at the same time.

I was ...14/15 when this game came to Germany and every kid had the cards. I've played the Gameboy Game and liked it but unfortunately never had anyone to play the card game with and everyone just collected the cards so i knew there was a game but didn't know how to play and my parents didn't get me a starterdeck (well i wouldn't had anyone to play with). My tcg experience just came when ygo hit the shores here in Germany and until 3 years ago i played it in higher ranked tournaments ... but at around 25 or so we started to play only locally. I've quit now and just play Final Fantasy tcg. With Pokemon TCG i learned the rules when i was able to buy some decks and played with friends just for fun.
For "old" formats my friends and i now just print the old cards and play with them :)

Does it drive you as crazy as it does me that Pokemon TCG collecting has never evolved beyond "This Pokemon is popular, so it's worth more!"? Farfetch'd, for example, holds less value than Magmar, despite Farfetch'd being a great competitive card and Magmar being practically unused; both uncommons. Same with Electabuzz vs Beedrill as rares, Beedrill is worth ~$100 more in PSA 9 despite being a terrible card and Electabuzz being one of the best cards in the set. Poketubers act disappointed to pull these cards when they should revel in their history as beasts of the competitive past.
